Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Guinea pigs are in the family Caviidea. What are the other two members of this family?

Answer: Maras and Mocos (rock cavies)

The other two members of Caviidea are Patagonian cavies - maras (Dolichotis) and mocos (Kerodon). These two, like the cavy, have been used for food but only the cavy has been domesticated.
2. The best way for me to spend time outside is:

Answer: In a cage with a top and no bottom

That's so I can eat the (non-treated!) grass but also be sheltered from predators and the sun - I can sunburn! The leash is a possibility but it's not very relaxing for me or my owner!
3. Guinea pigs may have been one of the most important food sources in ancient Peru since well before Inca times. True or false?

Answer: True

The estimate (made by Peruvian archeologists) is that cavy domestication began around 5000 BC.
4. Guinea pig is just one name for this animal. What is another?

Answer: Cavy

5. I need (must have) which vitamin added or in my food in order to be healthy?

Answer: vitamin c

Cavies are like humans - they can't synthesize their own vitamin c.
6. What is one of my favorite munchies?

Answer: All of these

Hay is a necessity for good digestion, but I'm nuts about parsley - although some other pigs may prefer carrots.
7. Do I need an exercise wheel? Yes or no.

Answer: no

It's very bad for my back.
8. Guinea pigs sharing the same cage establish a "pecking" order. What is one of the signs of dominance?

Answer: mounting

Yes, even female guinea pigs do this.
9. I like toys.

Answer: True

I like things hanging down in my cage that make noise or wiggle. I'm a big play fan.
10. Papa can stay with Mama during the birth and after.

Answer: false

No, he will mate with her immediately after the birth which is not good for Mama's health.
