Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the other very popular name for cavies?

Answer: Guinea Pig

The Spanish introduced the cavy to Europe during the 16th century. At the time they were returning from the New World countries. Guinea was one of them. Since the cavy looked similar to a pig it is possible that this is why cavies are also known as Guinea Pigs.
2. According to the American Cavy Breeders Association, how many breeds of cavies are there?

Answer: 13

The cavy is known all over the world. Because of selective breeding there is a huge selection/variety of cavies beyonf these 13 breeds.
3. Cavy babies are born fully furred and with their eyes open.

Answer: True

They are also running around and able to feed within hours of birth.
4. What bedding should NEVER be used in the cavy's cage?

Answer: Cedar

Cedar should never be used. It is toxic to cavies and other small animals.
5. Cavies should have unlimited timothy hay.

Answer: True

Timothy hay is a type of hay and not a brand. For young cavies (under 4 months), pregnant cavies or lactating mothers alfalfa hay is also recommended.
6. What is the recommended size of cage for a single cavy?

Answer: 27" x 56"

The cheapest kind of cages are the cubes and coroplast. They are easy to measure and are very easy to clean. You can check out cavycages.com for more information on c&c cages.
7. The best place to put a cavy cage is in the laundry room.

Answer: False

Humidity fluctuations and temperature fluctuations can cause sickness or even death. Please do NOT keep your cavy in a laundry room. The best place for the cage is in a non-drafty, bright room near family activities.
8. Cavies should be allowed to run and play in a secure area (not their cage) each day.

Answer: True

The smaller the cage is, the more your cavy needs floor time (a time when they can run). It is good for their health and happiness. Floor time should be in a place that is somewhat near family activities and pig proof.
9. Letting your cavy outside in an open top cage is safe even though you're not out there.

Answer: False

Never let your cavy outside without supervision! Crows and Hawks are dangerous predators to your cavy. The lawn must not be treated with any chemicals, as this could be very dangerous to the cavy. They must be in the shade at all times. Heat stroke kills cavies very quickly.
10. What toy should you not let your cavy play with?

Answer: Large exercise ball

Exercise balls and wheels should never be used with cavies. They can cause crippling injuries to their back, feet, and toes.
11. Male cavies can be neutered.

Answer: True

Any cavy can be neutered. It will prevent any unwanted pregnancies.
12. A cavy is happier by itself.

Answer: False

Cavies are social animals and often prefer the company of other cavies.
13. When getting a second or third cavy it is best to quarantine.

Answer: True

When adding another cavy you should always quarantine. This means keeping the new cavy in a separate cage in a separate room. You should quarantine for at least two to three weeks. This lessens the chances of the new cavy passing on a disease (if it were to have any). You should also wash completely between handling them.
14. What breed of cavy has long hair?

Answer: Peruvian

15. When does the cavy become sexually mature?

Answer: 4-8 weeks

The female can be bred at about 4-5 months old.
