Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which aptly named, loud, monkeys with long prehensile tails can be found in the forests of Central and South America?

Answer: Howler monkeys

Howler monkeys may very well be the loudest land mammal, and are often most vocal at dawn and dusk. They live in family groups of 10 - 15 and eat mostly fruit and nuts.
2. Which Asian monkeys, found in Borneo, are named for their exceeding large noses?

Answer: Proboscis monkey

The proboscis monkey is native to Borneo. Males have larger noses than females and apparently the larger the nose the more attractive the male. Habitat destruction has severely impacted numbers with its status being endangered on the IUCN Red List of 2018.
3. You have probably seen images of these monkeys enjoying a dip in a hot spring to warm up during the snowy winter months. They are named after their country of origin and are the northern most living monkey species. Which of these are they?

Answer: Japanese macaque

Japanese macaques seem to be faring well with their populations and habitat thriving on 3 of the 4 main islands of Japan. They spend most of their time on the ground but will climb trees. These are a highly intelligent species that have demonstrated many complex behaviors. In addition to warming up in hot springs, they have been observed washing their food and making snowballs.
4. Monkeys can be found in zoos the world over but in the twenty-first century wild monkeys are indigenous to Asia, Africa and which of these?

Answer: South America

Monkeys from Africa and Asia are referred to as old world monkeys, while South and Central American monkeys are termed new world. Monkeys were also found in Europe according to fossil records and can still be found on Gibraltar but it is unclear if they were introduced to the island by humans or were indigenous.
5. Which tiny new world monkey with a wild hair do is critically endangered in the wild?

Answer: Cotton top tamarin

This little cutie has a crest of white hair running from the top of its head over its shoulders - the "cotton-top". In German its name is Lisztaffe meaning Liszt monkey after the Hungarian composer who also had a shock of white hair.
6. Most old world (African and Asian) monkeys have color vision.

Answer: True

It has been theorized that monkeys developed color vision to enable them to differentiate between ripe (red) and unripe (green) fruit. However most monkeys that have color vision eat leaves.
7. Many monkeys are threatened or endangered. According to Conservation International the single most important factor affecting their survival is which of these?

Answer: Habitat loss

According to National Geographic, in the early twenty-first century of around four hundred primate species, over one hundred species are threatened or endangered. Of the 25 most endangered species 22 are old world species from Africa and Asia, while only three are from South and Central America.
8. For humans a smile means we are happy and friendly, but for our primate cousins a smile more often indicates which emotion?

Answer: anger

For many species of monkeys, showing their teeth through smiling or yawning is an indication of aggression and anger.
9. All monkeys have tails.

Answer: False

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Barbary macaque is a tailless ground dwelling monkey from Northern Africa. It is sometimes referred to as an ape but is a true monkey. Like other monkey species, the Barbary macaque is struggling to survive mainly due to loss of habitat.
10. So now you've learned more about monkeys, you are thinking you'd like one for a pet. This really bad idea, for many reasons, including three of those listed. Which one isn't true?

Answer: Captive monkeys tend to live for only 3-4yrs

Many species of captive monkeys live 30 - 40 yrs. Even the smallest primates are highly intelligent animals and are not suited to confinement or the lifestyle of a pet. Unlike dogs and cats, which have co-habited with humans for thousands of years, monkeys are truly wild and independent animals.

In many places it is illegal to have a monkey as a pet and, even if it were legal, many insurance companies will refuse to cover you due to the risk of severe injury to the owners or visitors.
