Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the origin of the name bichon frisé?

Answer: It derives from the French, biche, for "female dog"

The name is of French origin; the full modern translation of bichon frisé is "little white curly-haired dog".
2. Given that the name bichon frisé is of Latin derivation, I would guess the breed comes from one of the countries associated with the Mediterranean. Which country has the origin of the breed been traced to?

Answer: No one knows for sure

All of the preceding answers are plausible, as no one really knows where the dogs originated. Their history, however, has been indelibly linked to the sea: they often accompanied sailors on board ships and there is some evidence suggesting they were used as currency in bartering.
3. Looking at my roly-poly, fluffly white bundle, who hates getting a bath and avoids puddles at all costs, it's hard to believe that her ancestors are reputed to be which of the following water retrieval dogs?

Answer: Portuguese water dog

Believe it or not! Selective breeding is, indeed, an interesting phenomenon. Some contend that the bichon is also descended from the standard poodle, another water retrieval dog.
4. King Henry III of France was a champion of the breed. He loved the little dogs so much he wanted them near him all the time. How did he achieve this?

Answer: He carried the little dogs in baskets around his neck

King Henry so loved the little dogs that he insisted they be bathed, perfumed and adorned with ribbons. He set the fashion whereby others in the aristocracy followed suit. This gave rise to the word "bichonner", meaning to pamper.
5. What is the breed standard with respect to the bichon's coat?

Answer: Curly

Frisé means curly, thus the ideal is tightly curled hair that responds to brushing by becoming fluffy and powder puff like. It also feels velvety when stroked.
6. According to the AKC, what is the standard disposition of the bichon?

Answer: Gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate

The bichon makes a great companion. Due to their sensitive nature, it is recommended they be disciplined gently. There have been some reports of bichons being traumatized by a handler/owner speaking loudly to them.
7. What has Belle (and any other bichon frisé) been specifically bred to do?

Answer: Be a faithful, loving companion

Like the rest of her kind, Belle has been bred for no other purpose than to be a steadfast companion. We call her the "Velcro Dog" as she is usually firmly attached to us, either in a lap or curled up tight in bed. This is typical of the breed: they make perfect couch potatoes!
8. In addition to white, which of the following coat colours is acceptable in a bichon as per the AKC?

Answer: Predominantly white, with as little other colour as possible

If the dog is involved in showing, any colour other than white cannot exceed more than 10% of the dog's coat colour. If so, it can result in severe penalties in competition, unless the competitor is a puppy.
9. The bichon has a typical haircut intended for the show ring. Which of the following does this cut most resemble?

Answer: Snowman

The cut accentuates the roundness of the bichon. The head, in particular, looks like that of a snowman, with the brown button eyes and black nose. We give Belle a puppy cut, though, so she looks more like a dog than Frosty.
10. What is the typical bichon body type?

Answer: Sturdy

The bichon's sturdiness and stocky frame has been one element in its popularity. Unlike many lap dogs, they are built for rough and tumble play as well as aggressive cuddling.
