Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you would describe the average well-bred Bichon Frisé, which description would be most accurate?

Answer: Cheerful, spunky, sensitive, fun, affectionate.

Although that is the standard description of a Bichon Frisé, Bichons can be very stubborn at times. Bichons also benefit from activity around them--they can be very hyper.

It isn't "Calm, shy, loyal, gentle, sweet" because normally Bichons are bouncy and outgoing, but still of course are very sweet.
2. Bichon Frisés aren't hypoallergenic.

Answer: False

No, they actually ARE--seriously. Bichon hair is definitely less likely to cause allergic reactions than other dogs, and the best part is that they will never shed!
3. What does the name "Bichon Frisé" mean?

Answer: Curly Lap Dog

No kidding! It literally means "Curly Lap Dog"! And of course the name itself is French.
4. Bichons are great with young children.

Answer: False

Not generally--most young children will think that that cute little puffy Bichon is a stuffed animal, and they could hurt the Bichons without noticing what they're doing since they are somewhat fragile.
5. Is Spain one of the origins of the Bichon Frisé?

Answer: Yes

They also came from Belgium, then were taken to France.
6. Which description describes the appearance of a Bichon Frisé best?

Answer: White fluff, powder puff-ie, dark inquisitive expression

The "(Usually White)/black/red/or brown fluff, elegant-appearing, squarely built, air of distinction and dignity" is a Poodle.

The "White long silky hair, dark eyes, slightly rounded skull" is a Maltese.

And, the "Blue/black long hair, black nose, sharp intelligent expression" is a Yorkshire Terrier.
7. The Bichon Frisé is commonly considered a descendant of the Water Spaniel (Barbet).

Answer: True

Yup! That's how they got the name "Barbichon", later changed just to "Bichon".
8. Bichon Frisés love to swim.

Answer: False

No, they absolutely hate it, which is particularly strange because the Bichon Frisé was once working as a Spanish boat dog, and descended from the Barbet (also know as the French Water Dog)! :)
9. Female Bichon Frisés are slightly easier to house train than males.

Answer: False

It's the other way around! Yes, but both genders are still difficult to house train even though they are very intelligent. If you are considering teaching your Bichon Frisé a trick, it would be easier if you start at an early age.
10. And finally, which of the following is NOT looked for in Bichon Frisé when showing at AKC standard dog shows?

Answer: Face, throat, feet and part of the tail are shaved

Having your dog's face, throat, feet and part of the tail shaved is called a "Continental Clip" that is only looked for in Poodles--not Bichons. :)
