Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "O hai der! I'm all up in ur grill. Gonna say Meep-Meep!" This bird may look cute and charming (and even seem a bit too clever in cartoons) but rest assured, these creatures from the Southwestern U.S. are meat-eaters. What animal, the state bird of New Mexico, is depicted?

Answer: Roadrunner

Known best for being the mortal enemy of Acme advocate Wile E. Coyote in the "Looney Tunes" cartoon shorts, the roadrunner does not actually say 'Meep-Meep' or speed around roadways looking for birdseed. In fact, these small birds, while sprightly and fast, are much weirder than you think.
Although cartoons and the bird's name would lead people to believe that they can't fly, they are in fact able to do so. In addition, the roadrunner lives on a mixture of different foods ranging from prickly pear cactus to tarantula hawk wasps (those bugs that lay eggs in tarantulas) to tarantulas proper...and even rattlesnakes. Seriously. Whole.
Not as cute as you thought, eh?
2. "O hai der! I'm watchin' u! Gonna hug u wit my paws!" Don't be fooled by this primate! Found in Southeast Asia, this tiny creature with the inability to walk is known by what name?

Answer: Tarsier

Look at their cute eyes-- he just happens to be oh-so-cute and charming-- but it's all a ruse I tell you. Don't let his eyes fool you!
The tarsier is a cute primate, sure, but they can be creepy too. For instance, the tarsier only eats living things-- mostly bugs, but occasionally birds. The things are hardly large creatures so that's a feat in itself. They're also capable of springing through the air to travel and jump on prey AND they can spin their heads around almost completely. Imaging walking into a forest only to be ambushed by tarsiers. You'd be doomed, I swear.
Luckily the tarsier has one weakness, mainly the inability to walk. Due to weaknesses in their hind legs they're able to leap, climb, and travel on branches but they can't support themselves enough to travel on foot.
3. "O hai der! I'm swimmin' in da water. Comin' in 4 a cuddly hug!" This animal from the northern half of South America, while cute, is also known as the Amazon River Wolf because of its tendency to kill prey in packs. What is this 'cute' creature?

Answer: Giant otter

The giant otter is the largest otter out there; smaller otters can be found around the world but this is the one you need to worry about. Sure, it's cute...but at six feet long (longer than many people are tall) it's a predator. It's not coming for a hug.
Found mostly in Brazil, the giant otter has been known to eat caiman crocodiles and anacondas-- two creatures you may recognize as being deadly. How exactly? By attacking in large groups and ambushing to prevent escape. Their call is loud and their jaws are strong; as cute as they are you would not want to run into one...or nine.
4. "O hai der! I'm prowlin' in ur yard. Comin' up 2 b cuddly!" Nuh-uh. This creature found across the northern hemisphere looks cuddly, but it's hardly the case. What creature, once a major factor in fur distribution, is this one?

Answer: Red fox

The red fox looks like something you could domesticate, feed bits of food, and raise as a member of the family. It's not. Red foxes are pesky.
The red fox has a tendency to make the world's scariest scream should it be provoked into using its vocal cords-- when that happens, it's enough to shock prey. In addition, foxes have a tendency to spread rabies and mange. Although they are quite timid and reside in the wild, a lot of foxes become as friendly as raccoons and squirrels. Don't let their deceptive ways fool you.
5. "O hai der! I'm lookin' at u wit my beady eyes!" Madness! This creature is charming on the outside, but it has the mind of a psychopath! Found throughout the western hemisphere, what animal (whose fur changes with the seasons) is this?

Answer: Long-tailed weasel

The long-tailed weasel is eminently hug-able but as soon as it gets hungry, it morphs into a creature of terror, I assure you. If attacking smaller creatures with a painful single bite isn't enough to incapacitate prey, the long-tailed weasel also has the power of confusion. By this I mean that it moves around (almost too cute) to lull its prey into a sense of security before it strikes.
Did I mention it likes its meals left alive? It does. It only eats leftovers if they happen to be in its den.
To better protect itself throughout the year, the long-tailed weasel is also known for changing its fur coat from an earthy brown in the summer to white in the winter. Sneaky AND deceptive.
6. "O hai der! Do u mind if I swim on up and snuggle?" Aw...cuddly, cuddly, cuddly. And deadly! Found in the Antarctic, which of these animals with sharp teeth is one of the deadliest predators of the south seas?

Answer: Leopard seal

To be fair, that leopard seal looks really charming. Unfortunately, he's not worth the trouble. He'll bite you and drag you into the deep if you get too close, I assure you. The leopard seal is such a major predator in Antarctica that it's only typically beaten on the food chain by killer whales and sharks with bigger teeth.

The leopard seal also happens to have really sharp chompers-- enough to snag penguins onshore and chew at fish underwater (or, in some cases, eat each other). With a face like that, however, they may be deadlier than we could ever anticipate, so stay out of the water!
7. "O hai der! Don't get 2 close! I may be cute and cuddly but I'm really shy!" Aw...timid like Bambi! Not really. This creature from the cervidae family is characterized by sharp fangs protruding from its mouth. What is this animal?

Answer: Water deer

Okay. If "Bambi" taught us anything, it's that small deer are immensely cute, especially when attempting to travel along slippery surfaces. The water deer, native to China and Korea, is NOT Bambi. In many locations these animals are known as 'vampire deer' because of their tusks which they use to attack and eat. Although the tusks are mostly used to protect their land, the fangs certainly don't help them look cute like Bambi.
Water deer are also proficient swimmers. If you happen to take a swim and feel seaweed brushing up against your leg, just think. That could be a fang.
8. "O hai der! I can has food? U no u want a fluffeh puppeh!" Don't trust this dog. A mountain dog from Asia, which of these breeds (depicted) has a tendency to get very big and very fluffy?

Answer: Caucasian shepherd

Found in Russia and surrounding countries, the Caucasian shepherd is originally from the countries of the North Caucasus region. Bred as working dogs, they're effective at their job not only because of their size but because of their ability to intimidate. While cuddly and easy to wrap your arms around, this dog has a strong bite and, when angered, can look absolutely terrifying. On its hind legs it's as tall as a human (or taller) and, when it needs to be, it's very territorial.
Dog of doom, I'd say.
9. "O hai der! Can I eat ur seeds and nuts? Look at my poofy tail!" What common, deceptive rodent, some varieties of which can 'fly', is seen in the image?

Answer: Squirrel

Squirrels have got it made. Denizens of the forests and the cities, squirrels make their homes in burrows of trees and underground, storing nuts for the winter and being all-around charming for the sake of hibernation stores and such.
Who knew the world of squirrels had a seedy underbelly?
Squirrels have sharp claws and have been known to attack people for food and to protect territory. While many squirrels are timid, some must snap. Some have been known to attack in groups; others are solitary menaces. Perhaps the scariest part is that there's almost always a squirrel near you-- every continent except Antarctica and Australia contains squirrels...waiting to strike.
10. "O hai der! Look at my widdle nose and my floppy ears! Got a carrot?" Which of these oft-domestic animals, shown in the picture, has been wily in cartoons, timid to most in the wild, and in some locations, angry enough to attack people?

Answer: European rabbit

I know what you're saying. "Kyle, that is a bunny. You must be a FOOL to assume that these are horrible killing machines. In fact, your quiz is all LIES!"
Think again.
Remember "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" and 'that rabbit'? Turns out rabbits can be deadly. While most bunnies are tiny, timid, and kept as pets around the world, some rabbit populations have been known to fight hard for their place in their respective ecosystems. Some rabbits and hares have been seen fighting predators like venomous snakes; some have attacked people, even going so far as to swim after them to battle.
Cute? Cuddly? Nah. Just clever.
