Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The sound of this loud bird travels for about four kilometers and can be heard clearly from that far distance.

Answer: kakapo

This bird is one of the loudest birds in the world. The lyrebird has the loudest bird call in the world but the sound of the kakapo travels the furthest. It is active mostly at night and is a solitary bird that gets together only to breed. It is also flightless and an excellent tree climber.
2. This large bird is flightless and the second largest bird, by height, in the world.

Answer: emu

Emus are one of the biggest flightless birds in the world who come second only to ostriches in size. They are a mix of tan-brown and black in colour, sometimes with a bluish neck. They are five to six feet tall, sometimes taller than an average-sized man. They lay very big eggs and the chicks, when hatched are black in colour.
3. This is the smallest amphibian in the world and several of these could fit on a single fingernail without being crowded.

Answer: Paedophryne amauensis (frog)

As unbelievable as this seems, this frog is really so small. It is the smallest frog in the world and is 0.27cm long. These frogs are found in Papua New Guinea and have calls similar to insects making them difficult to spot. Their habitat was traced to the leaf litter in the forest where they lived and found their food.
4. This bat is the smallest in the world and can fit into anybody's palm. It weighs less than one gram.

Answer: Kitti's hog-nosed bat

This bat is one of the smallest animals in the world and can fit in the palm of anyone's hand. It usually has a reddish-brown coat but sometimes has a grey one. It weighs about 0.7 grams and is found only in very few countries in some limestone caves. It's also known as the bumblebee bat.
5. I am the bird with one of the largest wing spans and am found in the United States. I am on the brink of extinction and saved only because I have been bred in captivity.

Answer: California Condor

The condor can glide up to dizzying heights of 15,000 feet and is a scavenger that feeds on the carcasses of large animals. These birds don't breed until they are six to eight years old and lay only one egg at a time. If their eggs are taken, they may lay two or three. Though they are not as close to extinction as they were before, these birds are still very endangered.
6. This strange-looking creature is a member of the lemur family and is found only on the island of Madagascar. It is highly endangered and believed to be a taboo by some people.

Answer: aye-aye

An aye-aye is a remarkable animal that is also highly endangered because this species is found only in Madagascar. They are dark brown or black and have a tail that is longer than their bodies. They also have large eyes, slender fingers, large, radar-like ears and claws on each finger except their opposable big toes which help them to hang on to branches.
7. I am one of the large apes. My arms are longer than my body and I take very good care of my young. I stand about five feet tall and when I do that, my arms brush across the ground.

Answer: orangutan

Orangutans stand to about five feet tall though they have a handspan of over seven feet. They are very similar to humans and even make houses out of leaves for themselves in the forest. They eat fruit, leaves, bark and insects which they forage for in the daytime.
8. This giant animal is found only in Asia and Africa. It is an animal that is highly protective of its young and takes mud-baths to stay clean.

Answer: elephant

Elephants are the largest creatures on land though the blue whale is the biggest in the world overall. Elephants in Asia and Africa differ as the Asian elephants are smaller and the African ones bigger. Elephants mostly travel in herds with the huge tuskers leading the way and the elephant calves in the middle.
9. I am the loudest mammal, based on volume and length of each call, in the world. My sound is of a very low frequency and humans can't hear it.

Answer: Blue Whale

The blue whale is the biggest animal on earth that is not extinct. This huge mammal is said to be bigger than most of the dinosaurs who roamed the Earth millions of years ago. Their calves weigh about as much as an elephant when they are born. A blue whale usually gives birth to only one calf at a time.

The sperm whale's 'clicks' are louder but are of such short duration that most sources do not count them.
10. I am the largest snake alive today and I can grow up to 28 feet in length.

Answer: anaconda

This reptile is nothing compared to its ancestor the titanboa which could grow up to 13 meters in length. It is related to the titanboa but is a lot smaller than it. The anaconda, even though it is pretty large, is not a venomous snake but kills its prey by squeezing it in its giant curves.

These animals live near rivers, lakes and swamps and prefer to hunt alone. They give birth to 24-35 young at a time.
