Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many sharks are 'filter feeders', meaning that they swim around with their mouths open and eat plankton. Which of the following sharks is not a 'filter feeder'?

Answer: Bull Shark

Bull sharks are more aggressive than 'filter feeders' and will eat fish, other sharks and swimming mammals. They are one of the species of sharks that have been known to attack people.
2. Of the sharks listed below, which is the most aggressive?

Answer: Bull Shark

We have discovered that it is very difficult to choose one species of shark as being the 'most aggressive'. One source we read cited the Great White as being the most likely to attack humans, while a movie that my son watched cited the Mako Shark as being the most aggressive.
Having said that, all sources agree that Bull Sharks are among the top few species that are dangerous to humans, and are certainly more dangerous than the other species listed.
3. All sharks which fall under the broader category of Hammerhead Sharks have a hammer shaped head.

Answer: False

The Bonnethead Shark is a type of Hammerhead, and its head is spade- shaped, like a shovel.
4. What should you do if you encounter a shark?

Answer: Make yourself less threatening by crouching down.

The idea is to make yourself as unthreatening as possible.
Sharks seem to be more threatened by vertical height than length, and quick, sudden movements are more likely to provoke attack.
5. From the following choices, which shark is most commonly found in freshwater?

Answer: Bull Shark

Bull Sharks have been found up to 1,750 miles up the Mississippi River and 2,500 miles up the Amazon River. There are some rare sharks, such as the Ganges Shark, which are thought to live exclusively in fresh water rivers in Asia and Australia.
6. Sharks can become cannibals (eat other sharks of the same kind) while in a feeding frenzy.

Answer: True

Although this has been documented (I have seen a film where this happened), feeding frenzies usually only occur when people overload sharks' sensory systems by saturating the waters the odor of dead fish.
7. Which shark attaches itself to the side of its prey with suction-cup- like lips?

Answer: Cigar Shark

The Cigar Shark is also known as the Cookiecutter Shark because of the round-shaped wound it leaves in its prey. It feeds mainly on seals and literally sucks the life out its food once it becomes attached.
8. The goblin shark changes colour when it dies.

Answer: True

The goblin shark is very rare with few live sightings. It lives far from shore near drop offs on the ocean floor. It is pinkish in colour when alive and becomes grey when it dies.
9. Which is the most common species of shark in the world?

Answer: Spiny Dogfish

The Spiny Dogfish is slow growing and can live to be 70 years old. It is 2 1/2 to 3 feet long and is found pretty much all over, except around the equator because it prefers colder waters.
10. There is a shark called the Dumb Shark.

Answer: True

It is also called the False Catshark. It can grow up to 10 feet long and lives in deep, cold waters. We haven't been able to determine why it is also called the Dumb Shark, perhaps because it is sluggish and slow-moving.
