Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whale sharks often try to bite divers when they swim with them.

Answer: False

Whale sharks are known to be gentle with divers. They aren't a threat to humans. The only way that they hurt people is by accidentally hitting them with their tails when swimming with them.
2. Whale sharks eat other sharks.

Answer: False

They are actually filter feeders. Filter feeders feed on small creatures in the water, such as phytoplankton, macro-algae, plankton, and krill. There are only two other known species of filter feeders. They are the basking shark and the megamouth shark. To filter feed the whale sharks suck in water then push the water out their gills keeping the food inside.
3. Whale sharks are the only sharks in the genus Rhincodon and the family Rhincodontidae.

Answer: True

The family Rhincodontidae is in the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The family Rhincodontidae was called Rhinodontes before 1984. Whale sharks are also in the order Orectolobiformes.
4. Some whale sharks live in the Arctic Ocean.

Answer: False

They really live in warm, tropical oceans. They mostly live out in the open sea.
5. The color of whale sharks is white with grey spots.

Answer: False

They are really mostly grey with white spots and stripes. They have white bellies. The spots and stripes form a "checkerboard" like pattern. The spots can help identify individual animals.
6. Whale sharks give birth to live young.

Answer: True

They were first thought to lay eggs, but in 1996 a captured female was found to be pregnant with 300 pups. When the pups are born they are 40 - 60 cm long. They reach sexual maturity at about 30 years old. They can live to be 70 - 100 years old.
7. The whale shark is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Answer: True

Artisanal and commercial fisheries are a threat to whale sharks. In the Philippines, India, and Taiwan, fishing, selling, importing and exporting them for commercial purposes is banned.

The IUCN is the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
8. Whale sharks use their whole bodies to swim.

Answer: True

This isn't a very efficient way of swimming. Most fish don't swim with their whole bodies. Whale sharks can swim about 5 kilometers per hour.
9. In Kenya, people believe that the spots on whale sharks come from God throwing shillings onto them.

Answer: True

In Kenya whale sharks are known as "Papa Shillingi". The spots on their backs are also referred to as stars in some places, such as in Madagascar where they are known as "Marokintana"(many stars), and in Indonesia where they are known as "geger lintang"(stars in the back).
10. Whale sharks are named after the fact that they are closely related to whales.

Answer: False

No, whale sharks aren't even close to being related to whales. Sharks are fish and whales are mammals. They are called "whale" sharks because they are the largest type of shark and they filter feed like some whales.
