Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What color are wild Australian budgerigars (parakeets)?

Answer: green

Green parakeets are the color of wild parakeets, but breeders have produced budgies in many colors and shades, from white to turquoise to periwinkle.
2. Which one of these is not a health disorder of budgies?

Answer: molting

Molting, or loss of feathers, is normal and not a disease. Egg binding is a potentially fatal condition where a female parakeet has difficulties laying an egg. Psittacosis, also known as 'parrot fever', can also be contracted by humans and is sometimes fatal. Mycosis or scaly face is caused by a mite, Cnemidecoptes pili, lodging in a bird's skin.
3. What color is the cere (the area above the beak) of most male budgies?

Answer: blue

When parakeets are young, both the male and female cere are beige or pink. They change color as they age.
4. While a budgie is resting, which one of these actions does it NOT perform?

Answer: spread its wings slightly

Parakeets will usually choose one place to sleep as a routine.
5. Which of these is *not* a characteristic of young budgies?

Answer: born with feathers

Young budgies have stripes on the forehead and the cere doesn't change colour until the bird is around nine or ten months old. They are born naked.
6. When a budgie shudders and shakes its feathers, what emotion does this signify?

Answer: relaxation

After a parakeet does this, it often means it is ready to attempt something new.
7. Which one of these is NOT a characteristic of a sick budgie?

Answer: eats more than usual

Budgies do not eat more than usual when sick; in fact, they hardly eat anything.
8. What does a short and shrill budgie chirp signify?

Answer: alarm or danger

Caged parakeets often chirp like this when a large bird is flying close to the window or if an unusual noise alarms them.
9. What condition makes parakeets stretch and raise their wings?

Answer: extreme heat

Sometimes parakeets raise their wings without spreading them, but this is probably only a form of stretching.
10. Which one of these has not been the name of the Australian budgie?

Answer: grassland parrot

The budgie has also been called the shell parrot, canary parrot, warbling grass parakeet, and the betcherrygah, from which the current term 'budgerigar' (meaning 'good to eat', incidentally) is derived.
