Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This beautiful dog is a lovely example of which of the following herding breeds?

Answer: Border collie

One of the most intelligent breeds, the border collie gets its name from it place of origin around the English-Scottish border. Like other border collies, Bhutan is very athletic, highly energetic and is a great acrobat. While many members of his family are black and white like he is, other members come in a huge variety of colors including sable, liver, brindle and tri-colored.

The ideal home for a border collie includes one that does not have small children or other pets as the Border Collie will attempt to herd them.

They must have daily exercise and mental stimulation, as a bored Border Collie can wreak havoc on your home and its contents. A solid fence is a must, as most members of this breed love to chase moving vehicles.
2. This slender dog is a wonderful example of which breed of sight-hound, known for their sweet dispositions as well as their speed?

Answer: Whippet

This is an image of the whippet, one of the fastest of the sight-hounds in its size. Whippets are descended from greyhounds that were deemed too small for stag hunting and were then bred together to make dogs used for hunting small forest mammals such as rabbits and rats.

The average whippet weighs between 15-30 lbs. (6.8-14 kg) and stands between 17.5-22.5 in. (44-57 cm) tall with males being slightly larger than females. The have a short coat that is easy to care for, and come in a wide variety of colors.

The whippet makes a wonderful pet for the right family. Even though they were bred for racing they are usually couch potatoes that are often found sleeping when not chasing something, such as other dogs or small children. They have delicate bones and can be injured if care is not taken when interacting with them.
3. This lively little dog is a cairn terrier, a breed that got their names from which of the following?

Answer: Man-made piles of stones known as cairns

Cairns are large stone monuments made from small stones piled on top of each other, and the cairn terrier was bred to hunt rats that made their homes inside. They would burrow into these piles of stone and hold onto rats and other vermin until the farmer got there to make the kill. Cairn terriers come in a variety of colors and have a double coat for protection.

This breed is very active, loyal, and tough. They have strong digging and chasing instincts and a good fence is a must. Most cairns should not be taken out without a leash as most find it impossible not to chase anything that moves.

This is a wonderful dog for which training is an absolute must.
4. This is Tinkerbell, a member of which large breed which likes to claim cartoon character "Scooby-Doo" as a member of the family?

Answer: Great Dane

One of the very largest of dog breeds, the Great Dane may be great but it is not Danish. Rather it is a German breed that was bred for hunting deer and wild boar. Despite its original purpose most Great Danes are gentle giants who make wonderful pets as long as proper training takes place.

Their sheer size makes them wonderful watchdogs as well as a tendency to be suspicious of strangers. This breed needs a daily walk, but like many of the very large breeds, tends to be a bit of a couch potato when not involved in an activity that provides mental and physical stimulation.
5. Take a good look at the photo and see if you can track down what type of dog this is?

Answer: Bloodhound

This is an image of the lovable bloodhound. This is a kind, patient, mild-mannered breed known for its great nose. They have been known to track a scent that is over 100 days old as well as to track a scent for over 100 miles. They are a massive, heavily boned hound that has extra hanging skin around its nose and a large dewlap.

These are a gentle breed that are excellent around children but require strong leadership to make them feel secure. They have a short dense coat that can be a combination of red, tan, or black and do not shed a lot. Do not think that your couch is safe around a bloodhound; while they may not shed a lot, they definitely drool!
6. This is a photo of my old friend Shamus O'Flynn, who is a wonderful example of which of the following dog breeds?

Answer: Irish water spaniel

The Irish water spaniel is one of the oldest spaniels in the world as well as one of the rarest. It has a curly, puce colored coat with hints of purple, and is known for shedding very little. It has hair at the start of the tail only. The largest of the spaniels, the IWS, as it is affectionately known, was bred as a gun dog and is a strong swimmer.

They are easy to groom and make a wonderful, affectionate pet that is at home with a small yard and regular walks. They do well with older children and while they are not usually an aggressive dog, they can be trained to be a good watch dog.
7. This is an image of an Airedale terrier which were bred to hunt which of the following animals?

Answer: Otters

The Airedale terrier is the largest of the terrier breeds and is given the nickname of "King of the Terriers". This breed was bred to hunt the otters in local rivers around to town of Airedale in Yorkshire, England. They have a double layer coat that has dense wiry upper coat that cover the soft undercoat.

The double coat is meant to provide warmth when swimming in frigid rivers to retrieve otters. The Airedale is very intelligent, independent, and known for being stubborn. The Airedale makes a good family pet if properly trained.

The Airedale is a versatile breed that can be trained as a hunting dog, police dog, and watch dog.
8. The Old English sheepdog is a fine example of which of the following classification of dogs?

Answer: Herding

Originally bred to herd sheep, the Old English sheepdog has the ability to herd almost any animal. This breed does well in wide open spaces but is very adaptable and can be at home in the suburbs. Like all dogs, exercise is a must to keep them healthy and to burn off energy.

They can also be trained as excellent watch dogs as they have a strong sense of boundaries. They have a thick shaggy fur that is usually a combination of gray and white. At one time docking the tail was commonplace, but this is a practice that has, thankfully, gone out of favor, as there is no reason for it, other than cosmetic.
9. At the time this photo was taken, this breed was known as a Chinese spaniel, but is now known by which of the following options?

Answer: Pekingese

The Pekingese is a small dog who thinks he is a big dog. He is fearless, jealous, and loyal. He makes a wonderful one-person dog and can be very affectionate to his master. Training is a must for a Pekingese to feel secure, and to enforce the rules of the house. Without training they can become temperamental, overweight, and engage in compulsive barking.

They have a long beautiful coat which requires daily brushing so that it does not become tangled or matted. Their beautiful fur comes in a huge variety of colors and for centuries this breed could be owned by members of the Chinese Imperial Palace only.
10. Don't let the long hair on this dog fool you, what breed is this badger hunting dog?

Answer: Dachshund

The dachshund was originally bred to hunt badgers and is a fearless, robust breed. There are three varieties, the shorthaired, the wirehaired, and the longhaired, which is featured in this image. They come in many colors, and the wirehair tends to have more than one color in its coat.

While they can be difficult to train for a beginner, these are clever, lively, affectionate little dogs. They are usually best for families with older children and training is needed to keep them from biting both strangers and other dogs.

These hunting dogs are unaware of their small size and have no doubt that they are king or queen of the house.
