Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The disorder known as miner's anemia is caused by which of the following parasites?

Answer: Hookworms

Miner's anemia is formally known as Ancylostomiasis and is an infection caused by hookworms. It is a hookworm infection of the small intestine by these parasites leading to anemia. Infection usually occurs from walking barefoot over soil contaminated by feces, visible or not. Once the hookworms break the skin they migrate up the blood stream to the lungs where they are coughed up and swallowed back down into the digestive tract. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, cramping and severe anemia occur after infection. Ancylostomiasis is usually easily cured but, if left untreated or undiagnosed, it can cause death.
2. How does a human usually get infected with a lung fluke?

Answer: Through eating crustaceans

Lung flukes and paragonimiases caused by these worms are passed to humans by the consumption of raw or improperly cooked snails, fish, crabs, or other crustaceans. This disease affects southeastern Asia where eating raw seafood is very common. Infection with lung flukes causes pain and severe coughing.

The flukes can migrate to the spinal column and cause paralysis, or to the brain or heart causing death.
3. Elephantiasis Tropica is spread in which of the following ways?

Answer: Mosquito bite

Elephantiasis Tropica is a tropical disease that is transmitted through the bite of an infected black mosquito that has been contaminated by a specific type of roundworm. This disease of the lymphatic system can cause gross distortion of the body. Elephantiasis Tropica is most commonly found in Africa and southern regions of Asia.
4. How is the zoonosis Dracunculiasis usually contracted?

Answer: Drinking contaminated water

Dracunculiasis is an infection by a nematode worm known as Dracunculus. It is caused by drinking water that contains fleas that have ingested the Dracunculus larvae. Once inside the human body, these larvae migrate through the intestinal wall into other body tissues. During this time they are developing into adult worms.

They will eventually emerge through the skin, usually down near the ankles and feet, causing edema, fever, nausea, vomiting, and intense pain. If the patient bathes in water during this time, the new larvae are discharged starting a new life cycle.

The photo shows a worm exiting a human body and wrapping itself around a matchstick. The stick is used to prevent the worm from re-entering the body.
5. Where does Lyme disease get its name?

Answer: Location it was first discovered

Lyme disease is named for the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut, where it was first reported. This disease is contracted through the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, which is gotten through the bite of a deer tick. Symptoms include the bullseye type rash around the bite, as seen in the photo, fever, headaches and stomach discomfort. Without medical attention, the infection spreads to the joints, the heart, and the nervous system resulting in lifelong disability and even death.
6. Which of the following is an old name for rabies?

Answer: Hydrophobia

Rabies is a type of viral disease that is usually spread through the bite of one warm-blooded animal to another. The rabies virus infects the central nervous system causing insomnia, anxiety, confusion, seizures, hallucinations, hyper-salivation, fever, and severe headaches.

As the disease progresses difficulty in swallowing, extreme thirst and fear of water, commonly known as hydrophobia, may occur. In the past, the words rabies and hydrophobia were used interchangebly. Death usually occurs within days of the beginning of symptoms. Any animal bite should be seen by your physician.
7. Tapeworms can live inside the human gut for 20 years.

Answer: True

Tapeworms can range in size from .04 inches to 55 ft. (17m.) in length, and can survive inside the human gut for 20 years. Infestation is usually diagnosed when small pieces of the worm are found in the feces, sometimes still moving. There are many different types of tapeworm as well as different tapeworm maladies including Coenurosis and Diphyllobothriasis. Treatment consists of oral medications which kill the worm.

It then passes out of your body in a series of bowel movements. You will need to be checked periodically to make sure the whole worm is gone, or that you did not have more than one.
8. Orf is a viral disease that is can be transmitted to humans through which of these unlikely ways?

Answer: Shearing a sheep

Orf is a viral disease that is a widespread infection of many ruminants, especially domesticated goats and sheep. It is transmitted to humans by physical contact with the infected animal, its wool or even a blanket used to dry the animal off. Once infected the person is usually given lifetime immunity, and there are no serious after effects in a person with a normal immune system. Occasionally, an secondary infection will set in which will require medical attention, but this is usually a disease that will heal in a couple weeks and will not require medical attention.
9. If you are going to be interacting with an armadillo, rubber gloves are recommended so that you do not catch with of the following diseases?

Answer: Hansen's disease

In the southern areas of the United States, some armadillos are naturally infected with Hansen's disease. Handling them or eating them will put you at risk for this disease. If I use the other term for Hansen's disease this might frighten you a little more as Hansen's disease is also known as leprosy! This ancient disease can cause hideous skin lesions and nerve damage leading to severe scarring. Loss of fingers and toes is not uncommon. Leprosy can have an incubation period that lasts as long as 20 years which often makes it impossible to tell where and when the disease was contracted.
10. Rocky mountain spotted fever is caused by the bite of which of the following animals?

Answer: Tick

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a bacterial infection that is transmitted by a tick. Without medical care this disease can be deadly. Even with treatment serious, permanent damage to your heart and kidneys can occur. Symptoms of this malady include severe headache, high fever, nausea and vomiting.

This is followed by a severe rash, usually on the wrists and ankles. It usually takes from one to two weeks for the disorder to manifest after transmission has occurred. This disorder is more common during warm weather and cannot be spread from person to person.
