Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A mule deer is the predominant species of deer in which of these states?

Answer: Utah

Mule deer are named for their large, mule-like ears. These ears incorporate approximately 400 square inches of sound gathering space, making it extremely difficult to sneak up on one!
2. This salamander is toxic when handled, and the most deadly on earth when ingested.

Answer: rough-skinned newt

One of these was found to have had enough poison in it to kill 25,000 mice. Its skin contains enough of the powerful neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin to kill 30 humans. The only creature that can eat it and survive is the common garter snake, though the snake is paralyzed for hours after ingesting the newt.
3. Which of these groups of animals are you most likely to see in Arizona?

Answer: roadrunner, coyote

Roadrunners are quick enough to catch and eat rattlesnakes. They live in all the southwestern states. Coyotes live all across America and howl to keep in touch with others of their species. Coyotes can run 35-40 miles per hour at top speed, while a roadrunner's top speed is only 17 miles per hour. So Wile E. Coyote in reality would have the edge!
4. On June 22, 2006, two whooping crane chicks hatched at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin. This historic event marks what?

Answer: the first time in over 100 years that a whooping crane has hatched in the wild in the Midwest

The outlook for these beautiful birds is looking hopeful with organizations such as The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership (WCEP) leading the way.
5. Which one of these fish is largest?

Answer: lake trout

The largest of these four species of fish commonly called "trout", isn't a true trout, but a char instead. A lake trout of a confirmed weight of nearly 47 kg was caught in 1961.
6. Which of these animals is most likely to be found in a forest of conifers?

Answer: Kaibab squirrel

Conifers include evergreens such as spruce, pine, fir, and juniper. The name comes from their cone shape. Pronghorn antelope would be found mostly in areas of low growing vegetation, as would lions--of course on different continents. Mountain goats are most often found a considerable distance above timberline.
7. A wolverine sprays its food with a stinky musk to

Answer: keep other animals from eating it

A female wolverine gives birth to 1-6 young per litter, which interestingly enough, may all have different fathers.
8. These birds can be found scavenging at various places, including city parks. They don't, however, have the capacity to imitate human speech.

Answer: gulls

Gulls are often found far from the bodies of water with which they are generally associated. All three of the others can learn to imitate human speech to one degree or another.
9. Which area of the world has the most species of rattlesnakes?

Answer: The Sonoran Desert, including parts of Arizona, California, and northern Mexico

The threat to humans is exaggerated, but rattlers will attack when provoked. Still, they do more good than harm, eating rodents which can become pests.
10. This animal, thought extinct for half a century, is still reported as being seen, though none of the sightings has been confirmed.

Answer: Tasmanian wolf

The Tasmanian wolf (aka the Tasmanian tiger) wasn't really a wolf at all, but was related to kangaroos and wombats. Steller's sea cow vanished within 30 years of its discovery in 1741. The last known quagga died in an Amsterdam zoo in 1883, and the English wolf was extinct by 1770.
11. Which of these is the highest flying bird?

Answer: Ruppell's vulture

A Ruppell's vulture (also called Ruppell's Griffin), was sucked into a jet engine at 37,900 feet, above the Ivory Coast.
12. The short-horned lizard of the Great Basin, eats a diet mainly composed of?

Answer: ants

The short-horned lizard will die if a constant supply of ants is not nearby.
13. I can always escape a grizzly bear by climbing a tree.

Answer: False

It's a misconception that grizzlies can't climb trees. Grizzly cubs can certainly climb them, and adults can too if the branches are spread right.
14. The slowest land animal (not counting invertebrates) is:

Answer: three-toed sloth

The sloth moves along at an amazing .15 miles per hour. The tortoise is a speed demon by comparison, clipping along at .17 mph.
15. How many chambers does an elk's stomach have?

Answer: four

Elk are true ruminants, with four chambers used to break down food, and assist in the digestive process.
