Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Western riding is a uniquely American style of riding that was developed by cowboys in the old west. Which of these sports is not a western discipline?

Answer: Saddle Seat

Saddle seat riding is technically an English discipline. This style of riding originated on plantations in the American south. The completely flat saddle used is markedly different than other English saddles. Some common saddle seat classes are three-gated, five-gated, plantation walker, park and pleasure. All saddle seat riding is done on the flat, i.e. there is no jumping.
2. Three day eventing is one of the most popular horse sports and the most watched Olympic equestrian competition. As its name suggests, it is composed of 3 different events over 3 days. What are these three events?

Answer: Dressage, Cross Country, Show Jumping

The first day of competition is the dressage event, the second day of competition is the ever popular cross country event and the last day is the show jumping event. Three day eventing originated with tests to evaluate the skills of cavalry riders. An event called cross training is a spin off of eventing, composed of only dressage and show jumping.
3. All western riding competitions are rodeos.

Answer: False

While rodeos have events such as team penning, barrel racing and bronc riding, there are other western riding competitions such as pleasure shows, halter showmanship and reining competitions.
4. We all know about polo, the equestrian sport that is hugely popular in both England and America. There is a lesser known variation of polo that uses specialized lacrosse sticks instead of mallets to pass the ball and score goals. What is this interesting hybrid named?

Answer: Polocrosse

Polocrosse is more popular in the United States than in any other country. It is an incredibly entertaining game to watch.
5. Which of these styles of fences is indicative of a hunter class as opposed to a jumper class?

Answer: Natural brush fence

Jumper fences are wider and often much higher than hunter fences. They are also usually very creatively designed and brightly colored. Hunter fences are naturally colored and designed, and are never more than 4 feet tall. Water, or 'liverpool' jumps only arise in jumper competitions.

Jumper classes emphasize speed and precision over fences while hunter classes emphasize technique, style and equitation (rider skill and position).
6. What horse sport is often described as gymnastics on horseback?

Answer: Vaulting

Vaulting takes place in a 15 meter circle on the backs of very calm and well trained horses. Draft horses are usually used due to their calm demeanor, strength, and broad backs. Upper level vaulters always perform at the canter.

Team penning and cutting are cattle events typically seen at a rodeo and gymkhana is a mounted "games" competition.
7. Foxhunting is practiced the world over, and is very popular in America. It involves trained foxhounds leading a herd of riders through the country side on the trail of, naturally, foxes. This sport is now typically done by drag hunting, where a scent is laid for the hounds and no actual animal is hunted. In which country did foxhunting originate?

Answer: The United Kingdom

Traditional foxhunting is very controversial and was banned in the United Kingdom in 2004. Foxhunting led to the development of sports such as steeplechase and point to point racing. The traditions and styles of foxhunting also heavily influenced hunter and jumper competitions.
8. How many riders constitute a team in team penning?

Answer: 3

Team penning is an exciting event in which 3 riders set out to separate, "pen", certain specially marked cattle from a large herd.
9. Competitive trail riding (CTR) and endurance riding are very similar sports, they both involve timed riding over very long distances in rural areas. There is one major difference between the two sports. True or false: Endurance scores are based on time as well as factors such as horsemanship, manners and performance in certain obstacles while CTR scores are based solely on time.

Answer: False

Endurance scores are based only on time taken to complete the course while CTR takes multiple factors into account. Most endurance rides are 50 or 100 miles long while a competitive trail ride is usually under 40 miles. Both sports have veterinary check points regularly throughout the course to ensure that the horses are holding up well.
10. Harness racing is a sport in which horses race while pulling carts and running in a specific gait, usually either trotting or pacing. What breed of horse is most commonly used in harness racing in the United States?

Answer: Standardbred

Standardbred horses are the fastest trotting horses in the world. Harness racing horses pull two wheeled carts called sulkies.
