Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animal from Australia is grey and eats eucalyptus leaves?

Answer: Koala

Koalas live in tall, eucalyptus forests. The only states where you would find koalas naturally in the wild are Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Koalas are mostly nocturnal and often sleep 18-20 hours per day. A baby koala is called a joey. The joey stays in its mother's pouch for about six or seven months and drinks only milk during this time.
2. Which animal from Australia has big hind legs and uses jumping as a way of getting around?

Answer: Kangaroo

There are four kangaroo species: the red, antilopine, eastern grey, and western grey kangaroo. Kangaroos are the national symbol of Australia and appear on postage stamps, coins, and aircraft. The sex of offspring can be determined by the female. When scared, young kangaroos (joeys) sometimes jump head first into their mother's pouch.
3. Which animal from Australia has spines on its back and is classified as having a beak, but not in the traditional sense?

Answer: Echidna

Echidnas are also called spiny anteaters. Their spines are modified hairs. They prefer alpine meadows, coastal forests and interior deserts. Echidnas only eat termites, ants and other soil invertebrates. They typically breed between July and August.
4. Which animal from Australia has a flat wide tail like a beaver and a wide flat bill like a duck's?

Answer: Platypus

Platypuses can be found in habitats ranging from cold highlands to tropical rainforests. Platypuses are carnivores; they eat worms, shrimp, crayfish, and larvae of insects. They live, sleep, and give birth within tunnels in the riverbank. Platypuses breed between June and October.

Platypuses have no teats. The mother platypus oozes milk from glands on her abdomen and, rather than feeding on teats, the babies suck the milk from her fur.
5. Which animal from Australia is covered entirely with conical spines that also help defend it from predators?

Answer: Thorny devil

Thorny devils are active during the daylight hours. They are active from March through May and from August through December. Thorny devils hibernate in their burrows. To protect themselves, they have a false head that confuses predators. Their season for reproduction is between August and December. They mainly eat ants and termites, and they live in dry deserts and shrubland.
6. Which animal from Australia is a bird that can not fly and can grow as tall as six foot?

Answer: Emu

Emus' preferred habitats are grasslands, savannas and open subtropical forest and they avoid deserts. Emus feed on plant and animal matter. They travel long distances when food or water is scarce. Their eggs take around 45-60 days to hatch. The chicks depend on their parents until they are about 18 months old.
7. Which animal from Australia has brownish-grey fur, large eyes, a long tail, and a large flap of skin between its legs?

Answer: Sugar glider

This species relies on forested areas where they can forage and glide from tree to tree for food. Their habitats must also have dense vegetation to protect them. Sugar gliders eat both plant and animal matter. Sugar gliders have a short gestation period of approximately two weeks, and females give birth to a pair of young, known as "joeys."
8. Which animal from Australia is a species of cockatoo with colouring of pink and grey?

Answer: Galah

Galahs are highly sociable and are often seen in huge flocks that number as many as 1,000. Flocks spend much of their time sheltering between shrubs and trees in hot weather. Galahs eat seeds, grains, fruits, nuts, berries, grasses, roots, leaf buds, green shoots, and insects and their larvae. Galahs are monogamous birds and mate for life.

Their reproduction seasons are February through July in the north and July through December in the south. Galahs sometimes breed with other species of cockatoo.
9. Which animal from Australia has an elongated snout, is the size of the average house cat and wraps its tail around branches to stabilize itself while climbing trees?

Answer: Possum

Possums prefer to live in woody forests that seasonally shed their leaves. They are commonly found near a source of water. They eat carrion, insects, reptiles, eggs, small animals, plants, and garbage. Possums will give birth after a gestation period of 12-14 days, and 70-125 days later, the young will emerge from the pouch.
10. Which animal from Australia is a bird that has loose, long black feathers across its body and skin on its head and neck that is bright blue?

Answer: Cassowary

Cassowaries prefer to live in the dense rainforests of New Guinea and northern Australia. Cassowaries love fruit, and most are frugivorous. Cassowaries breed in May; in June, females pick the males with the best territory and lay their eggs in their nests. Females will lay between three and eight green eggs. It takes the eggs 50-52 days to hatch.
