Question 1 of 10
1. Dad says, "I want a big dog- no little toy dogs for me. An active dog that will play ball. A jogging companion, too." Mom says, "No shedding! I hate dog hair! And I wouldn't mind a dog that's a bit protective...sometimes some strange people come to the door" What dog might they consider? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The next family agrees that they want a big dog. They aren't really an outdoor bunch- they don't need a dog who'll play ball or needs a ton of exercise every day. They don't mind a little shedding, but don't want the hassle of grooming a long-haired dog. They don't own any other pets and have a securely fenced yard. Which breed might suit them? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The next family wants a versatile dog! Dad wants a hiking and camping buddy, Mom is interested in obedience trials, agility and flyball, and the kids want a ball-playing buddy and possibly a dog that they can show in 4-H. The dog absolutely must be friendly and safe with other animals and people- they don't want a breed that might have dominance problems. Which breed would NOT be one that they should consider? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Rancher Joe wants a dog to protect his sheep flocks. He needs a big, independent dog that will live with the flock and drive away coyotes and other marauders without human direction. This dog will not be a housepet, but a working animal. Which of the following breeds is typically a good livestock guardian dog in such situations? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. The next family wants a big hairy dog, and they don't care about shedding or drooling. However, they want a dog who is friendly with everyone, people and animals alike. Which breed might suit them? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Grandma wants a little dog that she can fuss over. The dog needs to be quiet and gentle. She would prefer a dog that needs some grooming- one she can brush and pamper- but that doesn't require professional grooming or trimming. Which breed might suit her? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Maggie wants a terrier. She loves their rough and tumble, fun-loving, intelligent personalities. However, she knows that many terrier breeds need a lot of hand-stripping and careful grooming to look their best. She also knows that many are real scrappers when it comes to other dogs. She'd prefer a terrier that doesn't share these characteristics- a little stripping is OK, but not hours and hours! Which terrier might suit her? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. The Walthams want a medium-sized family dog. They are always on the go, so a dog that needs a lot of exercise is OK with them. They don't want any really big dogs- nothing over 40 pounds- or any dominant or potentially aggressive dogs, or any dogs that are hard to housebreak. They would prefer a dog that is easy to train. Which breed might work for them? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Kent is an independent sort of fellow. He wants a smallish dog that can travel in his car with him. He prefers a dog like himself- a bit of a loner, a one-person animal, and kind of foxy. He doesn't like high-maintenance-grooming dogs or delicate toy dogs. Which dog might work for him? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. The college student says, "I live alone. I'm away from home most of the day, and I'm not sure how long I'll be living where I am now. I study a lot, I work 40 hours a week, and I'm usually with my boyfriend most weekends. I'd like a dog to cuddle and relieve some of the stress." Which dog fills her needs the best? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: A standard poodle

The Shepherd is out- it's a very heavy seasonal shedder. The Golden contributes hair all year round and isn't known as a protection breed. The English foxhound sheds, isn't protective, and doesn't usually retrieve. That leaves the standard poodle- a surprisingly robust and active dog that some trainers view as one of the overlooked protection breeds.

Answer: A greyhound

The Labrador needs more exercise than this family will provide. The husky and Newfoundland are heavy shedders and need considerable grooming, and the husky needs a great deal of exercise. Greyhounds, especially retired racers, are calm, mellow dogs who need less exercise than most people think.

They absolutely require a securely fenced yard, and sometimes are unsafe around small pets (many racers are trained by being allowed to chase and kill small animals.)

Answer: A Belgian malinois

While the Malinois meets all of their activity needs, these dogs are typically dominant and can rule the household without strong guidance. They may be aggressive to strangers. The other three are all very intelligent and active sporting breeds that are great "all-rounders" for dog activities.

Answer: An Anatolian shepherd dog

Herding breeds are divided into two types- those that work under human direction to herd sheep and those that live with and guard the sheep but are not used to herd them. The other three breeds work with humans to herd and drive sheep. The Anatolian, along with the Great Pyrenees, Kuvasz, Maremma, and several other breeds, serves as a livestock guardian.
5. The next family wants a big hairy dog, and they don't care about shedding or drooling. However, they want a dog who is friendly with everyone, people and animals alike. Which breed might suit them?

Answer: A Newfoundland

The other three breeds do not meet the criteria of animal and human friendliness. The chow and akita are one-person (or perhaps one-family) dogs and distrust people that they do not know. The malamute is usually people-friendly, but most are dog-aggressive and also have a high prey drive and are thus likely to kill other small pets like cats and rabbits.
6. Grandma wants a little dog that she can fuss over. The dog needs to be quiet and gentle. She would prefer a dog that needs some grooming- one she can brush and pamper- but that doesn't require professional grooming or trimming. Which breed might suit her?

Answer: A Cavalier King Charles spaniel

The Cavalier is a delightful little dog with a typical spaniel personality- gentle and usually quiet. The other three need professional grooming and tend to be much yappier.

Answer: A border terrier

The Jack and the Irish are holy terrors when it comes to other dogs, and the Wheaten has a very high-maintenance coat. The Border is the calmest of the terriers.

Answer: A Brittany

Beagles, while friendly and social, are notoriously hard to housebreak and to train. Mastiffs and the GSP are too large. Mastiffs aren't particularly easy to train, and some mastiffs and GSPs are dominant dogs.

Answer: A Shiba Inu

Shibas are rather like miniature akitas, with a very foxy look. They share the crusty, independent and loyal personality of the akita. The cocker needs too much grooming and likes everyone, the Pap is too delicate, and the puli has an extremely high-maintenance coat.

Answer: A stuffed toy dog

A dog is a huge commitment. If you want to share your life with a dog, you need to be sure that you have the time, and that your companion will not be abandoned because "we are moving and we can't keep him."
