Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is commonly known as the black scour worm?

Answer: Trichostrongylus

Chabertia ovina is known as the large mouthed bowel worm, Ostertagia is known as the brown stomach worm and Oesphagostamum is know as the large bowel worm.
2. Haemonchus contortus is better known as which worm?

Answer: Barber's pole

Barber's pole mainly occurs in areas that have signigicant rain during warm weather and pastures that have areas that stay green over the hotter months of the year.
3. Barber's pole causes which of the following?

Answer: All of these

This worm sucks the blood of the sheep which causes the anaemia, bottle jaw is the build up of fluid under the jaw, and death can occur with out any prior signs of sickness. Bottle jaw can also be caused by stomach fluke.
4. What is the reason for using a salt solution (water with salt mixed into it until no more salt will dissolve in the water) in a worm egg count test?

Answer: All of these

In just water the eggs stay at the bottom with all the faecal matter because they are more dense than water. This makes them harder to see under the microscope with all the faecal matter. With the salt solution the eggs become less dense and they float making them easier to see.
5. Is worm resistance an inherited trait?

Answer: Yes

To achieve results that are obvious can take years of selective breeding but it is one of the best long term solutions to assist worm control and also to combat the resistance to drenches.
6. Where in the sheep does barber's pole occur?

Answer: Abomasum.

The abomasum is also the fourth stomach, the caecum is known as the blind gut.
7. Trichuris is also known as what worm?

Answer: Whipworm

These worms are found in the blind gut. Whipworm can be a problem in sheep during drought. Sheep with heavy infections of whipworm have diarrhoea with mucous and may die.
8. Is a worm burden of both black scour worm and brown stomach worm more lethal than just having one or the other?

Answer: Yes

Black scour worm on its own will do damage to the small intestine and in severe cases cause death. Brown stomach worm does damage to the abomasum which can also kill the animal in large enough burdens.
9. Would you find the thin necked intestinal worm in both intestines?

Answer: No

They are live in the small intestine. In sheep with heavy infections, tangled masses of worms are found in the lower part of the small intestine. These worms do not cause any major damage in the lining of the intestine. There may be mild inflammation. The eggs of these worms are a lot easier to see than most because they are at least twice the size of the other eggs.
10. Where in the sheep would you find the nodule worm?

Answer: Large intestine and colon.

A sheep with a large burden of these worms will often be seen standing with a humped back. The nodules in the lining of the large intestine are big enough to see with the naked eye.
