Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take the abbreviation for a Master of Arts. Add the chemical symbols for chlorine and einsteinium and insert 'an' for a type of handcuffs.

Answer: Manacles

MA, Cl and Es with 'an' inserted. Master of Arts is just one of the potential answers for the initials MA, but Cl for chlorine and Es for einsteinium have fewer options. Inserting 'an' after the M creates the word manacles.

Manacles are a way of securing a prisoner's wrists to restrain them and keep them under control.
2. Take a frond-bearing plant and a word meaning to carry out or perform, and insert 'an' for an ABBA song.

Answer: Fernando

Fern and do with 'an' inserted. Ferns don't have leaves - they have fronds. Taking the word fern and adding do, meaning to carry out with 'an' inserted gives you the name 'Fernando', the title of a song by ABBA.

One of the most successful bands of all time, the Swedish group ABBA came to public attention when they won the Eurovision Song Contest. They went on to have numerous hits including 'Dancing Queen' and 'Take a Chance on Me'.
3. Take the international car registrations for Austria, France, Ghana and Italy. Add a song by Eminem and insert 'an' for a country.

Answer: Afghanistan

A, F, GH, I and 'Stan' with 'an' inserted. A list of four international car identifiers plus the Eminem song 'Stan' with 'an' inserted creates the name of Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is a landlocked county of Asia and has been subject to many wars and invasions in its time.
4. Take the internet suffix for Switzerland and a word for a mischievous child. Add the way Americans say 'Z' and insert 'an' for an animal.

Answer: Chimpanzee

CH, imp and zee with 'an' inserted. CH comes from Switzerland's official of Helvetic Confederation - in Latin the words are the opposite way around. A naughty child can be an imp and Americans say zee instead of zed for the letter z. Inserting 'an' creates the word chimpanzee.

Chimpanzees are primates, a great ape native to Africa. Genetically speaking, they are man's closest relatives.
5. Take a word for a blackguard and the Scottish form of John and insert 'an' for a native of a country in North America.

Answer: Canadian

Cad and Ian with 'an' inserted. Someone who behaves badly, especially towards women, is a cad while Ian is the Scottish version of John. By inserting 'an' we come up with Canadian.

Canada is the second largest country of the world, by area, after Russia and borders only the USA. People from there are called Canadians, or sometimes Canucks.
6. Take a type of medical scan and the chemical symbol for erbium. Add a word for 'inter' and insert 'an' for the name of a city in England or a region of New Zealand.

Answer: Canterbury

CT, Er and bury with 'an' inserted. A non-invasive scan can be abbreviated to CT and Er is the symbol for erbium. If you inter somebody you bury them and inserting 'an' gives you the name of Canterbury.

Canterbury is the main seat of the Anglican church in the UK with the Archbishop of Canterbury the most important of the archbishops. The New Zealand region took its name from the English city and is located in the South Island.
7. Take the chemical symbol for cobalt and the abbreviation for millimetres. Add an abbreviation for ditto and insert 'an' for a member of a particular military unit.

Answer: Commando

Co, mm and do with 'an' inserted. Cobalt is Co, although there are many other uses I could have chosen, millimetres are abbreviated to mm and do is used for ditto. Adding 'an' gives you the word commando.

Commandos are a specialised type of soldier, often dropped behind enemy lines to obtain information of disrupt the enemy's supply lines, for example.
8. Take the chemical symbols for tantalum and sulphur. Then add actress Farrow's first name and insert 'an' for an Australian island.

Answer: Tasmania

Ta, S and Mia with 'an' inserted. Tantalum has the symbol Ta, S is sulphur and the actress is Mia Farrow. Inserting 'an' gives us Tasmania.

Tasmania is not just an island, it is one of the states of Australia. It lies off the southern coast of Victoria with the Bass Strait separating them.
9. Take the international car registration letters for Turkey and Sweden. Then add the name for a hare's lair and insert 'an' for a word meaning to change considerably.

Answer: Transform

TR, S and form with 'an' inserted. TR denotes Turkey and S is Sweden. Hares create a sort of nest called a form in grass, and inserting 'an' will give you the word transform.

If you transform something, you change it completely - think of Cinderella being transformed into the belle of the ball as an example.
10. Take the chemical symbols for potassium and gallium. Add the international car registration for Romania and the chemical symbol for oxygen and insert 'an' for an Australian animal.

Answer: Kangaroo

K, Ga, RO and O with 'an' inserted. The three chemical symbols are K for potassium, from kalium given to it by a German chemist, Ga for gallium, named for France, and O for oxygen. Romania gives us RO and inserting 'an' creates the word kangaroo.

One of Australia's symbols, the kangaroo is a marsupial, meaning it has a pouch in which its young lives while immature.
