Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Take the chemical symbol for bromine, and a word for heather and insert 'is' for a small, herring-like, fish.

Answer: Brisling

BR and ling with 'is' inserted. Bromine is a rusty coloured element, one of those liquid at standard room temperature. It was discovered in the nineteenth century. Ling is a member of the heather family and can also be a fish in its own right.

Inserting 'is' after solving these two clues creates brisling, the name of a fish found in the Atlantic Ocean and several seas from the Baltic to the Adriatic.
2. Take the abbreviation for a toilet, a word for 'not off' and a transgression and insert 'is' for a US state.

Answer: Wisconsin

WC, on and sin, with 'is' inserted. Using WC for a toilet is short for water closet and is often seen in estate agents' details when a property is for sale. The opposite of off is on and another, shorter, word for a transgression is sin.

Including the word 'is' creates the state of Wisconsin, the thirtieth state to join the United States of America in 1848.
3. Take a word for an impression in a surface, and a way of scoring in rugby, and insert 'is' for the profession of treating teeth.

Answer: Dentistry

Dent and try with 'is' inserted. You wouldn't want to see a dent in your car or furniture as this means it has suffered damage. A try in rugby, either union or league, is scored when a player crosses the end line and grounds the ball on or beyond it. Putting 'is' in the middle creates the word dentistry.

Dentistry refers to the professional care of teeth including cleaning, filling cavities and extraction of teeth which cannot be saved.
4. Take a short name for Sally, and a word meaning 'to cover with earth', and insert 'is' for the former name of Harare.

Answer: Salisbury

Sal and bury with 'is' inserted. Sal is the most common abbreviation for Sally and if you hide something underground you are said to bury it. Including 'is' gives the answer of Salisbury.

During the period of British colonisation, the capital of Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, was known as Salisbury, which is also the name of an English city. It was renamed as Harare when the country became independent.
5. Take a word meaning 'fail to hit', and a word for taking a drink by tiny amounts, add a Greek letter, and insert 'is' for a river in the USA.

Answer: Mississippi

Miss, sip and Pi, with 'is' inserted. If you don't hit something, you miss it, and a small drink is called a sip. The Greek letter required is Pi and adding 'is' gives the name of the Mississippi River.

The river is the second longest in the USA, flowing from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.
6. Take the abbreviation for Massachusetts, and a name for a university professor, and insert 'is' for a former American president.

Answer: Madison

MA and don with 'is' inserted. MA refers to Massachusetts or it could refer to a Master of Arts degree, while a university professor is known as a don. Putting 'is' in the middle gives you the name Madison.

James Madison was the fourth President of the USA and one of the founding fathers. His term of office lasted from 1809 until 1817.
7. Take the standard score for a golf hole, and the Scottish version of John, and insert 'is' for a man from the French capital.

Answer: Parisian

Par and Ian with 'is' inserted. Each hole on a golf course is given a standard score, the number of strokes which it should take from tee to getting the ball in the hole, and this number is called par. John has different versions of the name depending on the country and in Scotland this is Ian. With 'is' added, you form the word Parisian.

Paris is, of course, the capital of France and a Parisian is a male from the city - a female would be a Parisienne. Paris is known as the 'city of light'.
8. Take a word meaning skill, and the abbreviation for Orange County, add a rodent and insert 'is' for a nobleman or woman.

Answer: Aristocrat

Art, OC and rat with 'is' inserted. Any skill may be called an art, although it is mostly used for painting or sculpture. OC can refer to the Orange County, adding the unwelcome rodent called a rat and inserting 'is' creates the word aristocrat.

Most aristocrats have a title of some description, such as prince, duke or count. They can also be described as having blue blood. The usual explanation for this is that they had fair skin meaning the veins stood out more, so their blood looked as if it was blue.
9. Take a short name for Philip, and the prong of a fork, and insert 'is' for an uncultured person.

Answer: Philistine

Phil and tine with 'is' inserted. Most men with the name Philip are known as Phil, unless their mothers are speaking to them. A fork has tines, or prongs, and inserting 'is' gives you a new word of Philistine.

Originally, a Philistine was a member of a tribe living in Canaan. They are mentioned in the Bible, with Goliath being the best known of them, killed by David with his sling. In common parlance, a philistine is someone who takes no interest in any form of art or even hostile to it.
10. Take the abbreviations for a commanding officer and a politician in the UK's House of Commons, with Italy's capital city, and insert 'is' to find a word meaning 'to reach an agreement by mutual concession'.

Answer: Compromise

CO, MP and Rome with 'is' inserted. Commanding officer is just one of the uses for the letters CO while and MP is a Member of Parliament in the UK. The capital of Italy is Rome, of course, and including 'is' in the middle of these creates the word compromise.

A compromise is an agreement where each side gives way on certain requirements to enable a decision to be made. A compromise will bring an end to a disagreement but may not satisfy either side.
