Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When I can't find the squashed-fly biscuits, I GRAB DIAL-phone to call Mum and ask where they are.

Answer: Garibaldi

I GRAB DIAL = GARIBALDI

Garibaldi biscuits are quite popular in England, and have come to be called "squashed fly biscuits" due to their appearance. The currants squashed between and dotted throughout the dough give the appearance of squished insects. The cookies are nevertheless quite yummy. They were named in honour of Italian patriot Giuseppe Garibaldi after he visited London in the 1860s.
2. Visiting Scotland, I choose some DEAR BROTHS instead of cheap cookies to have before my meal.

Answer: Shortbread

DEAR BROTHS = SHORTBREAD

Shortbread is a rich, buttery, absolutely delicious traditional Scottish treat that can come in many shapes and sizes. Ideally it will melt in your mouth and make you feel extremely guilty for eating it.
3. I must RENT TAUPE TUB to wash out the stains from my cookie-baking apron!

Answer: Peanut butter

RENT TAUPE TUB = PEANUT BUTTER

Peanut butter cookies can be tricky to leave for Santa or to have at parties, in case someone has nut allergies, but they have always been a favourite of mine. The recipe for these cookies is said to have originated in the USA in the 1910s.
4. I enjoyed history lessons in this GRADE NAMING REB generals for credit and an oddly-shaped cookie!

Answer: Gingerbread man

GRADE NAMING REB = GINGERBREAD MAN

Gingerbread men are not for everybody, though they are extremely tasty. If, like me, you have a problem biting the heads of things (cookies, chocolate bunnies, etc.), they can pose a problem. I'd rather get my gingerbread flavour from a house or a simple cookie-shaped cookie!
5. Mother has found some LOAM TEA for us to enjoy with our biscuits.

Answer: Oatmeal

LOAM TEA = OATMEAL

Oatmeal cookies can be simply chewy bits of loveliness with rolled oats as their main ingredient, or they can be gussied up with raisins, chocolate chips or other goodies. In any form they are perfect for dunking in your tea or coffee.
6. WE FAR prefer these crisp, cream-filled cookies to the more elaborate offerings.

Answer: Wafer

WE FAR = WAFER

Wafers with cross-hatching like a waffle, filled with something sweet and creamy and coloured pink or yellow make a perfect offering for Santa, don't they? Wafers can also be flat, round and boring, but let us not have those for Christmas. The variety of wafer that is sometimes stuck in ice cream would be fine, though.
7. If you are going to CHILE, CHOP COAT at the waist for comfort and don't forget your snack.

Answer: Chocolate chip

CHILE CHOP COAT = CHOCOLATE CHIP

Let's face it, chocolate chip cookies are good any time, not just at Christmas. Santa will be lucky if enough survive to be left under the tree for him. When I was little, I used to eat the chips before my mother even had time to bake the cookies, as I'm sure lots of other kids have done (and are still doing).
Oof, I can feel myself gaining weight just writing this quiz!
8. As your tummy is upset, I GIVE TED'S mild biscuit to you, to soothe it.

Answer: Digestive

I GIVE TEDS = DIGESTIVE

Digestive biscuits have their place, and some people even like them a lot, but I wouldn't ever think of them as "cookies". That's a personal opinion, of course, and Santa might really need some digestives by the time he gets to your house, after all those other super-sweet cookies and possibly some adult beverages.
9. The university teams might ROAR TO ROW, but this biscuit is designed for babies.

Answer: Arrowroot

ROAR TO ROW = ARROWROOT

Arrowroot cookies pretty much fill the same purpose as digestive biscuits, with the added perk of being great for teething babies. Arrowroot itself is gluten free, another good thing, but packaging should be checked for added wheat products.
10. Some kids who think it is COOL CHEAT and eat Santa's cookies.

Answer: Chocolate

COOL CHEAT = CHOCOLATE

Plain chocolate cookies are probably quite rare, though I've recently found chocolate chocolate chip cookies (as opposed to chocolate chips in a pale cookie) which really deliver a good dose of chocolate.
I guess it's hard to blame those kids for going after the chocolate cookies, isn't it?
