Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Before we line up the shot, what do we call those obliging people who flush out grouse on The Glorious Twelfth?

Answer: Beaters

The 12th of August marks the start of the grouse hunting season in UK, when thousands of specially reared birds are driven towards shooting enthusiasts, known as "guns" by a small army of beaters.
Grouse shooting has been popular since the Victorian era and the moors on which grouse are farmed take up almost 17,000 square kilometres (6,500 square miles) of UK.
2. Drop a letter and rearrange to find a partial refund.

Answer: Rebate

Everyone likes getting cash back, but in some instances it can make or break a project.
If a movie is shot in a country which wants to attract tourists, such as Macedonia, Lithuania or Estonia, the company can qualify for tax rebates, often up to 30 per cent of production costs incurred in the country.
3. Drop a letter and rearrange to find the headgear associated with Field Marshal Montgomery, Che Guevara and Benny Hill.

Answer: Beret

Berets are often seen as typical French headwear, but were probably first worn by Minoans on Crete, 3,000 years ago and were the adopted by the Romans, although within Roman hierarchy, only aristocrats were allowed to wear a white beret.
The first reference to berets in France is from the 13th century, yet they became part of the caricatured symbol of French culture, along with the bunches of garlic, the baguette and the Citroen 2CV.
4. Drop a letter and rearrange to find a refreshing drink. Perfect after a hard days quizzing.

Answer: Beer

Beer is quite probably the oldest recorded recipe in the world, with evidence of its manufacture being found on ancient Egyptian papyrus scrolls dating back to around 5,000 BC.
These were brewed with indigenous herbs and fruits such as pomegranates and dates though, so were probably not as smooth as the refreshing nectar which we drink today.
5. Drop a letter and rearrange to find a poetic term meaning "before".

Answer: Ere

Not just used by poets, ere can also be found in many works of literature, such as "Treasure Island" (1883) by Robert Louis Stevenson, in which he begins chapter five with "I was scarcely in position ere my enemies began to arrive, seven or eight of them, running hard".
It is also present in "The Two Towers" (1954), the second of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, where the line, "'The wind is north from the snows,' said Aragorn. 'And ere morning it will be in the East,' said Legolas" can be found.
6. Drop a letter and rearrange to find the symbol for the chemical element Rhenium.

Answer: Re

Not discovered until 1908, and named after the River Rhine, rhenium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust, with an average concentration of one part per billion.
Due to its high melting and boiling points, most rhenium is used in the manufacture of jet engines by the aviation industry.
7. Add a letter and rearrange to find a doctor who released the platinum selling album, "The Chronic" in 1992.

Answer: Dre

Dr Dre, real name Andre Young, is not only the man who brought us Death Row Records and West Coast G-Funk, he is also the man who gave Snoop Dogg his big break.
Snoop featured on the majority of the tracks on "The Chronic" (1992), including the hugely successful single, "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" (1992) and his first album, "Doggystyle" (1993) was produced by Dre.
8. Add a letter and rearrange to find a greeting used in letter writing.

Answer: Dear

Much more affectionate and personal than "to whom it may concern", "dear" is the most common way to start a letter in English.
The salutation has also been used to good effect in the titles of novels such as "Dear John" (2006) by Nicholas Sparks and in songs such as "Dear Prudence" (1968) by the Beatles.
9. Add a letter and rearrange to find a male duck.

Answer: Drake

Drake refers to any male duck and they tend to be more brightly coloured than their female counterparts.
Good examples of this are the blues and greens found on a mallard drake, compared to the brown of the female and the bright blue bill and chestnut body of the ruddy duck compared to the female's dull brown.
It is believed that one reason for this is that it affords the female more camouflage and therefore greater safety when she is nesting.
10. Before we line up the shot, what needs to happen to those snooker balls. Add a letter and rearrange to describe what you've done to them.

Answer: Racked

Snooker is a hugely popular game in Europe and the Far East, conceived in 1875, with the first World Championship being contested in 1927. It consists of using a cue ball to pot 21 coloured balls of varying points value into pockets on the snooker table.
Snooker is derived in part from billiards, which dates back to the 14th century and uses just three balls and no pockets and saw its first champion in 1825 in Edwin Kentfield who would hold the title for the next 24 years.
A cousin of both of these games is eight ball pool, popular in North America, where it has its roots, dating back to 1900.
