After the signing of the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact in 1939, Soviet troops occupied Estonia in 1940 and incorporated it into the Soviet Union. Estonia and other Baltic countries ultimately gained independence in September 1991. In 2004 Estonia joined both NATO and the European Union.
