Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. THE PREMISE: The new apprentice zookeeper, Bachelor Bob, has worked out a new feeding and demonstration schedule for the animals recently placed in his charge at the FunTrivia Zoo in Quizzyland. Alas, he stood too close to the hippopotamus, and with a SNAP the paper was gone (though Bob managed to move his hand in time). Now help Bob piece together the schedule from the fragments of his memory! The Animals: lion, elephant, giraffe, seal, hippo Their names: Furaji, Imani, Jojo, Nuru, Zula Feeding times: 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm THE CLUES: 1. Bob feeds Zula one hour before the lion, and one hour after Imani. 2. Bob feeds Jojo one hour before Furaji, but one hour after the giraffe. 3. Bob feeds Nuru one hour before the elephant. 4. The hippo does not eat at 11am. NOTE: Use a pencil and paper to keep track of clues and conclusions, perhaps with a grid or chart. Question 1 - Which animal has the last feeding/demo of the day (3pm)?

Answer: Furaji

The 3pm slot is the last of the day. (See the feeding times in the premise).
Bob feeds Imani one hour before Zula, who is fed one hour before another animal (clue 1), so they are out.
Likewise, Bob feeds Jojo one hour before another animal (clue 2).
Same with Nuru (clue 3).
Therefore, Furaji gets the last feeding of the day.

During the 18th century, the price of admission into a zoo in England was three ha'pennies, or failing that you could bring one cat or dog to feed to the lions!
2. When is Jojo fed?

Answer: 2pm

Furaji is fed last (see previous question), at 3pm.
Bob feeds Jojo in one hour before Furaji (clue 2).
Therefore Jojo is fed at 2pm.

London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo. Founded in 1828 by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), it is sometimes called Regent's Zoo as it resides in the northern end of Regent's Park. During the Second World War, wounded soldiers were admitted free. The zoo was bombed with extensive damage to numerous buildings in 1940 and again in 1941. Luckily, no animals died in the attack, but a zebra, a donkey, and her foal escaped!
3. When does Bob feed the giraffe? Enter just a number: 11, 12, 1, 2, 3

Answer: 1

Clue 2 states that Jojo is fed exactly one hour after the giraffe.
We figured out in question 2 that Jojo is fed at 2pm.
Therefore, Bob feeds the giraffe at 1pm, one hour earlier.

The giraffe was once called the "camelopard", as medievals thought it was chimaeric beast, a cross between a camel and a leopard. The horny projections atop its head are 'ossicones' made of cartilage, not bone, anchored to the skull and covered with skin.
4. When does Zula get her feeding time? (Please enter just a number: 11, 12, 1, 2, or 3. No "am/pm" or other suffix)

Answer: 1

We have determined that Furaji is fed at 3pm (question 1), Jojo at 2pm (question 2). Zula can't be fed first (11am) because she eats after Imani (clue 1).
Clue 1 also states that Zula eats one hour before the lion. Since the giraffe feeds at 1pm (question 3), she can't have the 12pm slot.
That leaves the 1pm slot.

Between 2010 and 2014, the Maruyama Zoo in Japan tried without success to mate a pair of hyenas, before realizing they were both males.
5. What is the giraffe's name?

Answer: Zula

We've just determined that Zula feeds at 1pm (question 4).
Bob feeds the giraffe a 1pm (question 3).
Therefore, Zula is the giraffe.

The oldest operating zoo in the world is Tiergarten Schönbrunn, or Zoo Vienna, which was founded as an imperial menagerie in 1752. The original Baroque buildings are still preserved, including an imperial breakfast pavilion now used as a café.
6. At 12pm Bob feeds and shows off his training of which animal?

Answer: Imani

Zula eats at 1pm. (question 4).
Bob feeds Imani one hour before Zula (clue 1).
Therefore, Imani is fed at 12pm.

The Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest in the USA, was founded on 21 March 1859, but because of the U.S. Civil War, it did not open to the public until 1 July 1874. Admission was a quarter of a dollar (25 cents) to see about a thousand species of animal.
7. When does the lion get some yummy raw meat and roar for the crowd? (11, 12, 1, 2, 3)

Answer: 2

The lion eats one hour after Zula (clue 1).
Zula eats at 1pm (question 4).
Therefore, the lion eats at 2pm.

An adult male lion's roar can be heard up to eight km away. Lions hunt large animals such as zebra and wildebeest. An adult female needs about five kg of meat per day, while an adult male needs upwards of seven kg per day.
8. When do Nuru and the elephant eat at their respective times?

Answer: Nuru at 11 am, the elephant at 12pm

Nuru is fed one hour before the elephant (clue 3). That eliminates the final slot for Nuru (3pm).
Zula the giraffe eats at 1pm (questions 3-5).
Jojo the lion eats at 2pm (questions 2 and 7)
Imani eats at 12pm (question 6).
The only spot for Nuru is 11am, which means the elephant eats at 12pm -- which also means that the elephant is Imani!

In 2006, thieves trying to steal a koala from the Rockhampton Zoo of Queensland, Australia, changed their mind after it proved too vicious and stole a crocodile instead, which was much easier to handle (so zoo officials reported).
9. Which animal is Nuru?

Answer: seal

Nuru eats at 11am (question 8).

Nuru is not the hippo (clue 4),
nor the elephant (12pm, see clue 3 or question 8),
nor the lion (2pm, question 7),
nor the giraffe (1pm, question 4).
Therefore, Nuru is the seal.

Seals are carnivorous and eat fish, crustaceans, and even birds. Some, like the leopard seal, eat other species of seals!
10. Lastly, what is the name of the hippo who caused all the problems in the first place?

Answer: Furaji

The hippo is not Jojo (the lion, questions 2 and 7),
nor Imani (the elephant, questions 6 and 8),
nor Zula, (the giraffe, questions 3-5).
The hippo eats at 3pm (question 1), so he can't be Nuru, the 11am eater (question 8 and clue 4); besides, Nuru's the seal (question 9).
Therefore, the hippo is Furaji.

In summary:
11am - Nuru the seal
12pm - Imani the elephant
1pm - Zula the giraffe
2pm - Jojo the lion
3pm - Furaji the hippo
(Perhaps this is why he ate the schedule; Bob probably should have fed him first!)

Hippos cannot swim, though they remain submerged for 16 hours a day in rivers and lakes to keep cool, and can walk and sleep underwater. Hippos look cute and are vegetarians, but they are among the most dangerous animals of Africa. About 3000 people die from injuries by hippos each year.
