Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What comes next? 120, 60, 40, 30, 24, ... ?

Answer: 20

It all starts with the number 120. Divided by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 gives you this row.
2. Fill in the blank: 0, 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, 42, 56, 72, ... ?

Answer: 90

The formula behind this one is : n squared - n. So 9x9-9= 72 and we are looking for 10x10-10=90...
3. Take a 3 by 3 square. The first row reads: 9, 1, 7. The second row: 8, 2, 4. The third row: 7, 3, ... ?

Answer: 1

(The first column) - (2 x the second column) = the third column. So 7 - 2 x 3 = 1.

Another solution is: 2 x (the second row) - (the first row)= third row.
So 8 x 2 = 16, 16 - 9 = 7. Also: 2 x 2 = 4, 4 - 1 = 3 4 x 2 = 8, 8 - 7 = 1.
4. An easy one, fill in the blank: 100, 81, 64, 49, ... ?

Answer: 36

These are all squares, 10x10, 9x9, 8x8, 7x7, we are looking for 6x6.
5. Fill in the blank: 4, 9, 25, 49, 121, 169, ...?

Answer: 289

This serie is the squares of the prime numbers. The next primal number is 17, and 17x17=289.
6. Fill in the blank: 1, -1, 2, -3, 4, -7, 6, -11, 8, -15, 14 ...?

Answer: -17

Again, this has to do with the prime numbers. First you subtract the next prime number, then you add the next, then you subtract, .... The last number shown was -15 + 29. The following prime number is 31, so 14-31= -17.
7. Fill in the blank: 2, 4, 9, 28, 125, 726, ... ?

Answer: 5047

This series has to do with the factorial(!) of a number. It is n! + n. So 6! + 6 = 6x5x4x3x2x1 +6= 726. The number we are looking for is 7! + 7.
8. Take a 3 by 3 square. The first row reads: 1, 3, 10. The second: 2, 2, 8 and the third: 3, 1, ... ?

Answer: 10

Solution 1:(Column 1)squared + (column 2)squared = column 3. (answer = 10)
Solution 2: (Row 2)squared - Row 1 = Row 3.
9. Fill in the blank: 1, 2, -1, -4, -9, -54, -61, ...

Answer: -488

Starting from 1: (x2) (-3) (x4) (-5) (x6) (-7) and we are looking for -61 x8 = -488.
10. When I add up the numbers 10, 20, 30, ..., untill 200 (200 included), what will be the sum?

Answer: 2100

For this one, you add up the numbers 1 until 20, and multiply the result by 10. The formula to add up these numbers is (n x(n+1)):2. In total we get: (20 x 21):2 x10) = 2100.
