Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Be sure to pay attention to the number of words in each answer, because the number of spaces in the clue is not necessarily indicative of the number of words or where one word ends and another begins. For the purpose of this quiz, Y is a consonant, not a vowel. The theme is: Sporting disciplines at the Winter Olympic Games BTH L N

Answer: biathlon

The biathlon is an event primarily held at Winter Olympics and is a combination of two sporting disciplines: cross-country skiing and shooting. Participants ski around a course, stopping intermittently to shoot a set of targets. For every target they miss, they receive a penalty, be it a time penalty or an extra distance to ski before the next round of shooting.
2. The theme is: Sporting disciplines at the Winter Olympic Games NRD CC MB ND

Answer: nordic combined

Like the biathlon, the Nordic combined incorporates two elements: cross-country skiing and ski jumping. Originally involving the skiing followed by the jumping, the Nordic combined now favours the ski jumping first to ensure the participants' energy is not spent skiing for many kilometres and then producing a less than ideal ski jump.
3. The theme is: Sporting disciplines at the Winter Olympic Games LG

Answer: luge

In the luge discipline, participants lie on their back on a sled as they travel down a curved track to reach the finish line. These phenomenally smooth tracks produce very little friction and, as such, the luge is able to pick up incredible speed as it careers around each curve. Because of this, it is one of the more dangerous disciplines at the Winter Olympics.

The skeleton discipline is similar in many ways to the luge, except participants lie face down on their stomachs as they head down the track.
4. The theme is: Ian Fleming's 'James Bond' stories MNR KR

Answer: moonraker

Published in 1955, 'Moonraker' is the third in the 'James Bond' series of books and follows Bond as he tries to stop London from being devastated by nuclear weaponry. 'Moonraker' is also the name of the eleventh film adaptation of the series, with Roger Moore playing 007, but many of the events in the film were written especially for it; they did not appear in the original novel.
5. The theme is: Ian Fleming's 'James Bond' stories YNL YL VT WC

Answer: you only live twice

1964 saw the publication of 'You Only Live Twice', and marked the last literary appearance of the villainous Ernst Stavro Blofeld, one of Bond's most infamous adversaries. In the book, Bond is sent to Japan where he is asked to kill someone, only to find out that it is really Blofeld masquerading as a Dr. Shatterhand. Fuelled by an intense desire for avenging the death of his wife, Tracy, at the hands of Blofeld and his wife during a drive-by shooting on their wedding day (an event from the end of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service', the previous book), Bond ultimately kills Blofeld, but suffers amnesia as a result of blowing up Blofeld's castle.

The book ends with Bond trying to piece together the missing fragments of his mind as he sets off for Russia.
6. The theme is: Ian Fleming's 'James Bond' stories FRY RYSN LY

Answer: for your eyes only

'For Your Eyes Only' is both the name of a book in the series and also a short story contained within that book. The collection of short stories that make up 'For Your Eyes Only' include the aforementioned along with 'Quantum of Solace', 'From a View to a Kill', 'The Hildebrand Rarity', and 'Risico'.

In 'For Your Eyes Only', Bond is sent by M to protect the daughter of a murdered Jamaican couple, M's friends, after refusing to sell their house and land to the corrupt Cuban secret serviceman, Herr von Hammerstein.
7. The theme is: Countries and their demonyms C YP RS N DCY PR T

Answer: cyprus and cypriot

Resting in the eastern section of the Mediterranean Sea, near Asia, the European country of Cyprus is a popular tourist hot-spot and is noted for its Greek and Turkish influences in its culture and ancient architectural style.
8. The theme is: Countries and their demonyms NT HRLN D SNDD TC H

Answer: netherlands and dutch

Located just across the North Sea from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands gets its name from the fact that it's rather low; that is, most of the country is mere metres above sea level. Many people often refer to the Netherlands as Holland, though, strictly speaking, Holland refers to two provinces on the western side of the Netherlands.
9. The theme is: Countries and their demonyms MDG SCR NDM LGS Y

Answer: madagascar and malagasy

Madagascar is perhaps the most ecologically diverse region in the world, home to many unique and protect plant and animal species. As such, it's a veritable treasure trove for wildlife documentaries, such as David Attenborough's 'Madagascar'. Natives of Madagascar have no problem pronouncing the name of the Malagasy capital city, Antananarivo, but for outsiders, it can prove to be a bit of a tongue twister.
10. The theme is: Books of the Old Testament of the Bible C CLS STS

Answer: ecclesiastes

Regarded by many to be written by Solomon, Ecclesiastes details how life is full of vanity and emptiness, before suggesting that following God will result in a better, happier life.
11. The theme is: Books of the Old Testament of the Bible LMN TT NS

Answer: lamentations

Lamentions contains several poems and, true to its name, laments the destruction that befell Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II.
12. The theme is: Books of the Old Testament of the Bible SH

Answer: isaiah

Where Lamentations tells of the destruction of Jerusalem, Isaiah predicts its occurrence. Some of the Dead Sea Scrolls contain some of the earliest written versions of Isaiah.
13. The theme is: Surnames of philosophers DSCR TS

Answer: descartes

Known for his work in the field of mathematics (where we get the Cartesian coordinate system) and his ever-famous philosophical quip "cogito ergo sum" (I think, therefore I am), Rene Descartes lived from 1596 to 1650.
14. The theme is: Surnames of philosophers WT TGN ST N

Answer: wittgenstein

Amongst Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophical thinkings is quietism (which, broadly speaking, attempts to remove the confusion caused by other concepts, philosophical or not) and meaning is use (in which the definition of words is determined by how the word is used rather than what the word refers to).
15. The theme is: Surnames of philosophers KRK GR D

Answer: kierkegaard

Living from 1813 to 1855, Søren Kierkegaard focused heavily on existentialism, particularly with regards to religion. His work influenced many, including Nobel Laureate in Literature Albert Camus, critic Jean-Paul Sartre, and the aforementioned Ludwig Wittgenstein.
