Answer: musical theatre text

The Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical is given to the best LIBRETTO of a musical. The LIBRETTO contains the dialogue and stage directions of a musical, and in some instances the song lyrics as well. The first winner of this Tony Award category was in 1949 when Bella and Samuel Spewack won for the musical "Kiss Me Kate."
2. _ _ _ C A R A _

Answer: card game

BACCARAT is a popular card game that people play at casinos, not really at home or at a friend's house. The kind of game you see in a 'James Bond' movie. The game was invented in the Middle Ages in Italy by a gambler named Felix Falguiere.
3. _ R O S A _ _

Answer: lacking imagination

PROSAIC refers to that which is on the dull side, the ordinary, as opposed to the poetically highfalutin. The word comes from the Latin "prosa" meaning "prose", the type of writing we normally see as opposed to the more stylized written form of poetry. The Late Latin form led to "prosaicus" and to the French prosaique.
4. _ _ O L G A _ _ _ _ _ _

Answer: daydreamer

A WOOLGATHERER is colloquially associated with someone who is a daydreamer, but the more literal definition is a secondary one and simply and directly is one who gathers up the wool shorn from a sheep and to be used in making clothes. But "daydreamer" is by far the more commonly known definition these days. Wool is a convenient fabric because of its ability to dry quickly and its resistance to mildew.

It regulates one's temperature effectively in both cold and warm weather. It's a good insulator and is relatively flame resistant and water resistant.
5. _ _ T R A C Y _ _ _ _ _

Answer: antibiotic

TETRACYCLINE is an antibiotic drug taken to fight bacterial infections. TETRACYCLINE was invented by Lloyd H. Conover, a research scientist who discovered it in 1947, and patented it in 1952. In three years it would become the most commonly prescribed antibiotic in the U.S.
6. _ _ A M B E R _ _ _ _

Answer: a lady's servant

A CHAMBERMAID was a lady's servant who attended to her bedroom and such, and it has come to mean a woman employed by hotels to help tidy the bathrooms and bedrooms. The 2002 film "Maid in Manhattan" is based on the true story of a chambermaid named Anne-Marie Rasmussen who worked at the Rockefeller's household as a kitchen maid, and who in 1959 married Steven Rockefeller, the son of Nelson Rockfeller.
7. _ _ B R I E _ _

Answer: abstinence

SOBRIETY is the act of temperance, the state of being sober, unaffected by alcohol or by other fiery emotional factors. The word comes to us from the Latin "sobrietatem" meaning "state of being steady." Around the beginning of the 15th century the French "sobriete" gave us the meaning of "moderation when indulging."
8. _ _ _ D A N E

Answer: lacking excitement

MUNDANE is that which is concerned with this world and not relating to the heavens or any sort of fanciful or spiritual world. Think more boring than that, duller. The word comes to us from the Latin "mundus" meaning "the universe, the world." The Late Latin "mundanus" meant "Belonging to the world." And then the French "mondain" from the 15th century, meant "of this world, earthly." Secular is a good synonym for this meaning.
9. _ C A R L _ _

Answer: red

SCARLET is a bright red color, that some say also has a hint of orange in it. Even though the color has been associated with sacred spiritual things, i.e. the blood of Christ and sacrifice and the color that Cardinals wear, the color has also been associated with sin or adultery, i.e., "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

This association may be due to the Biblical citing in Revelation (17:3-4) "where I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names and had seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was dressed in purple and scarlet"....
10. _ _ _ L A C Y

Answer: misconception

A FALLACY is a false notion, something that is not true despite whether or not some people think it's true. It is a misconception on their part. And this word comes to us from the Latin "fallacia" which meant "a deception." The "etymological fallacy" is a term that refers to the misconception that current meaning of a word has to be similar to its historical meaning.

But that doesn't mean etymology is not significant--that's not what the etymological fallacy intends. It merely rejects the idea that a word should be used a certain way because of a specific etymology. An example would be the word "decimation." It originally meant to reduce by one-tenth of the amount which we can easily imagine due to the the prefix "deci-." But these days we use the word to mean a near total reduction or destruction. That doesn't mean we are incorrect in using it that way just because it used to be specifically one-tenth.
