Morgan Freeman is the youngest of four children, and is the son of Mayme Edna and Morgan Porterfield Freeman Snr. Morgan Jnr had a well-travelled childhood, and lived in Greenwood, Mississippi, Gary, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois.

When Morgan's father died, he was sent to live with his grandmother in Charleston, Mississippi. It was then in Mississippi where his love for drama and acting surfaced, most notably at Greenwood High School.

Morgan joined the Air Force at the age of 18, and his fascination with aeroplanes can be traced back into his teenage years; he was a big fan of war films with aeroplanes in them. When he did train as a pilot, he found out that this career path wasn't for him.

He described being in the cockpit as a "distinct feeling I was sitting in the nose of a bomb". With his love for drama and acting rising to the fore once more, Morgan bailed out of his Air Force career.

Morgan has since made a full recovery. The crash occurred north of Ruleville, not far from Morgan's home n Charlston. The jaws of life (hydraulic cutters) had to be used in order to get Morgan out of the wrecked vehicle, and he was eventually airlifted to the hospital in Memphis, TN.

This was after Morgan Freeman had appeared in the box-office Batman hit "The Dark Knight" (2008) which also starred the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, and lead actor Christian Bale, who played Batman.Morgan suffered a broken shoulder, arm and elbow in the crash and had surgery to repair nerve endings in his arm and shoulder on August 5, 2008.
