Question 2 of 10
2. "For he will soar on steel wings and do battle with fierce creatures who mock his myopic cohorts as they turn away."

Question 5 of 10
5. "And he will rage against injustice and sling missiles at the unfair magistrate."

Shatner was a frequent guest on a popular game show that paired celebrities with rank-and-file contestants. He became persona non grata on the program, however, after hurling a chair following what was judged as an illegal clue. What show was witness to this intemperate behavior?

Drawing on his "Star Trek" fame and experience, Shatner has enjoyed a successful career as a science fiction author. Which of these book series did he originate?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "And in the later days, he shall raise his voice in words of song again, and there will be much rejoicing."

Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "Hark! He shall take up the arms of law and earn great glories in his age!"

At around the same time that the album "Has Been" came out, Shatner's acting career also experienced a marked resurgence. Beginning with appearances on the stalwart legal drama "The Practice", Shatner hewed out a new character: a brilliant, if slightly demented attorney who has risen to dominate the legal scene. Shatner continued this role on a new series, "Boston Legal", co-starring James Spader. What is the name of this character that has grown to rival Captain Kirk in the public's perception of William Shatner?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. "And his name shall be called 'Shatner'."

Or will it? The actor's family name is actually "Schattner", but it was shortened and simplified by William's Ashkenazic grandfather Wolf into its current, less recognizably Jewish form.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And lo, from out of the arctic north shall come a man, well-schooled and versed in the ways of eloquence and the lines of the immortal Bard." In what Canadian province was William Shatner born, raised, and formally educated?

Answer: Quebec

Shatner was born on March 22, 1931 in Montreal. He graduated from prestigious McGill University in 1952 with a degree in Commerce, not Theatre as one would suspect. He did receive extensive training as an actor, however, and saw a good deal of action as a player in the Shakespearean Stratford Festival of Canada in Stratford, Ontario before his work in television and film.
2. "For he will soar on steel wings and do battle with fierce creatures who mock his myopic cohorts as they turn away." One of Shatner's earliest television roles of note was as an airplane passenger, recently released from a mental institution - who SWEARS that a gremlin of some sort is trying to rip apart the wing next to his seat. What television program counts the classic "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" as one of its episodes?

Answer: The Twilight Zone

Though Shatner did appear on all of these programs at one point or another, his performance as the tormented Bob Wilson (who KNOWS - accurately, it turns out - that if he does not act his plane will crash) remains one of the most celebrated episodes of the venerable "Twilight Zone" - quite an accomplishment considering the series would also star Charles Bronson, Elizabeth Montgomery, Burgess Meredith and Lee Marvin over its 1959-1964 tenure.

Shatner had earlier starred in the also-memorable "Twilight Zone" episode "Nick of Time" as a superstitious man who struggles with his new bride over the psychic powers of a napkin holder. The episode really is better than my synopsis.
3. "And all shall see him don golden raiment and traverse through the cosmos." In what year did Shatner first play his iconic role of "Star Trek" captain James T. Kirk?

Answer: 1966

Though the original series would last a meager three seasons, the Kirk character (along with most of the others from the series) were revived for a series of films beginning with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979. Shatner would play Kirk in seven of these movies, concluding with "Star Trek: Generations" in 1994.

While filming "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", Shatner and longtime costar Leonard "Mr. Spock" Nimoy did a favor for director Garry Marshall, who was filming the romantic comedy "Frankie and Johnny" on an adjacent lot. This Al Pacino/Michelle Pfeiffer vehicle contained a scene where Pacino's character opens a door and is utterly surprised by what he sees on the other side. With Shatner and Nimoy's cooperation, "method" actor Pacino opened the door to see Kirk and Spock in all their glory. Marshall got his surprised reaction.
4. "His lips will speak in words of great song; all heads will bow in bemused consternation." In 1968, Shatner released his first album, "The Transformed Man". Over the years, it has met with, to put it charitably, mixed reviews. Which of the following is not a track on this collection of spoken word recordings?

Answer: Wild Thing

Shatner's recording of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", in which he tries to emote the manic, scattered thoughts of an LSD user, was voted "Worst Beatles Cover of All Time" in a 2003 Music Choice company poll. His rendition of "Mr. Tambourine Man" (which features him incongruously wailing the song's title at the end) has faired no better, and has been spoofed extensively on the World Wide Web, almost since that medium's inception.
5. "And he will rage against injustice and sling missiles at the unfair magistrate." Shatner was a frequent guest on a popular game show that paired celebrities with rank-and-file contestants. He became persona non grata on the program, however, after hurling a chair following what was judged as an illegal clue. What show was witness to this intemperate behavior?

Answer: The $20,000 Pyramid

Shatner would later parody his own bent for violent outbursts on "Saturday Night Live" in 1986, exploding on a room full of Trekkies for their excessive devotion and concluding with "Get a life, people!" The phrase "Get a Life" would later be the title of Shatner's 1999 tongue-in-cheek memoir.
6. "Yea, he will take up the shield of gold and the mantle of black; he will fight against villainy with a comely maiden at his side." Shatner achieved some success in the title role of the police drama "TJ Hooker", which ran from 1982 to 1986. What young actress and future object of Mike Myers' adoration co-starred with Shatner on this program?

Answer: Heather Locklear

Locklear would take on the challenge of playing the likable Stacy Sheridan in support of Shatner while simultaneously playing the decidedly unlikable Sammy Jo on "Dynasty".

Shatner often remarked that playing TJ Hooker was a stretch for him, as Captain Kirk was essentially a reprise of his Shakespearean roles while Hooker's streetwise lingo took a bit more getting used to. Perhaps it showed; Shatner's unflinchingly tough-as-nails execution of his lines (liberally salted with epithets like "punk" and "scum") and Adrian Zmed's perpetually naïve portrayal of his partner (whose persona alternated between green rookie and grizzled Vietnam veteran) have rendered this show a likable, if campy, exercise in cop-show escapism.
7. "He shall take up pen and keys, composing epics of joy and conflict." Drawing on his "Star Trek" fame and experience, Shatner has enjoyed a successful career as a science fiction author. Which of these book series did he originate?

Answer: TekWar

A series of novels centering on the trade in a computerized drug called "Tek", Shatner's literary output has inspired several TV movies, a short-lived Canadian-produced television series, dozens of graphic novels, and even its own video game. A very profitable sideline for Captain Kirk, who has also contributed to several "Star Trek" and "Quest for Tomorrow" novels.
8. "And in the later days, he shall raise his voice in words of song again, and there will be much rejoicing." In 2004, Shatner released the album "Has Been" to, perhaps surprisingly, generally favorable reviews and respectable sales. What well-known contemporary music figure served as the album's producer and arranger?

Answer: Ben Folds

All but one track on "Has Been" was a Shatner original, with musical additions to Shatner's spoken-word lyrics made by Ben Folds and other contributors, including Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins, Lemon Jelly, Brad Paisley, and Nick Hornby. The sole exception to this is the album's best known track, "Common People", a cover of the 1995 UK hit by the band Pulp, which also features a guest appearance by Joe Jackson.
9. "Hark! He shall take up the arms of law and earn great glories in his age!" At around the same time that the album "Has Been" came out, Shatner's acting career also experienced a marked resurgence.

Answer: Denny Crane

Shatner and Spader have set a record of sorts with their litigious characters, winning Emmy awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, respectively, for portraying the same characters on both "The Practice" and "Boston Legal" in 2003 and 2004. Though he had previously won several minor prizes, including the 1983 Saturn Award for his work in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan", these have been his first Emmys, though he was nominated for his guest work on "Third Rock from the Sun" in 1999.
10. "And his name shall be called 'Shatner'." Or will it? The actor's family name is actually "Schattner", but it was shortened and simplified by William's Ashkenazic grandfather Wolf into its current, less recognizably Jewish form.

Answer: True

Though not as closely identified with Judaism as some other performers, Shatner has been active in the Jewish community in many ways. A longtime equestrian enthusiast, Shatner is spokesperson for The William Shatner/Jewish National Fund Therapeutic Riding Consortium Endowment for Israel, a foundation that funds horse-riding therapy for Israeli, Jordanian, and Palestinian children with cognitive, physical and/or emotional disabilities. This and other humanitarian work the performer does is very much in line with the Jewish principle of Tzedakah, or just generosity. Shatner also worked as a counselor at Quebec's Camp B'nai Brith in his youth.

As always, I'd love to hear any comments you might have, especially those that will make this a better quiz. Thanks for playing.
