Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These pairs *were* flashes in the pan, but do you know which of these four short marriages lasted the longest (to annulment or finalized divorce)?

Answer: Jennifer Lopez and Chris Judd

J-Lo and Chris Judd (her former backup dancer) married in September of 2001, and the following year in November, she filed for divorce. At the time of the filing, she was already dating Ben Affleck. The divorce was finalized in January of 2003, making their marriage a total of 16 months.

Drew Barrymore and Jeremy Thomas were married for 11 months from ceremony to finalized divorce (March 1994 - February 1995). The other two options were both annulments: Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney were married in May of 2005, with the marriage being annuled in September of the same year (4 months). Britney Spears married her childhood friend Jason Alexander on January 3rd, 2004. Their marriage was annuled only 55 hours later.
2. Which Hollywood couple met on the set of their first movie together in 1989, got married in 1990, then went on to film two more with each other before breaking up in 2001 after nearly 11 years of marriage?

Answer: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

All of the celebrity couples in this question were married in 1990, but the only pair to make it through to the end of the millenium were Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. They met while filming "Days of Thunder" in 1989, and also acted together in "Far and Away" (1992), and "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999).

Of the other choices, Sean Bean and Melanie Hill were married until 1997, Tom Arnold and Roseann Barr stayed together until 1994, and Gary Oldman and Uma Thurman were wed until 1992.
3. Which of these pairs of screen legends met in the mid-1930s, played the parts of lovers in a movie together, then married and stayed together 20 years before divorcing?

Answer: Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh

Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh had met prior to being cast as lovers in "Fire Over England" (1937), but acting as lovers led to an actual romance that they pursued, culminating with their marriage in 1940. Their onscreen romances also continued in 1940's "21 Days" and 1941's "That Hamilton Woman".

It was a seond marriage for both Olivier and Leigh. Olivier's first wife was actress Jill Esmond - they were married in 1930, divorcing in early 1940. Vivien Leigh (originally Vivian Hartley), had previously been married to Herbert Leigh Holman, a marriage which lasted from 1932 until they, too, divorced in 1940. Olivier and Leigh were married in August of that year.

For the other couples presented, here is a brief summary: Fairbanks and Pickford were married for 16 years (1920-1936). They ended their marriage with a divorce. Bogart and Bacall were married for 12 years (1945-1957). Bogart died at the age of 57 (in 1957), losing his struggle with cancer. Gable and Lombard's marriage was only three years long (1939-1942), but only by virtue of a tragic plane crash that took Lombard's life at the age of 33.
4. Each of these celebrities has been married multiple times. Considering only their first six marriages (all having married six or more times), who had the longest stint in wedlock (to one spouse) at 21 years?

Answer: Jerry Lee Lewis

Jerry Lee Lewis, in his first six marriages, was married for 13 years (to his third wife), 10 years (to his fourth wife), and 20 years (to his sixth wife). His sixth wife was Kerrie McCarver; they were married in 1984 and divorced in 2005. On March 9th, 2012, Jerry began his seventh marriage at the age of 76.

Elizabeth Taylor was married eight times to seven different men (she married Richard Burton twice). Her longest marriage was to Richard Burton (the first time - her fifth marriage), lasting ten years. Her second stint with Burton (her sixth marriage), lasted less than a year.

Considering only her first six marriages, Zsa Zsa Gabor's longest marriage was her third. She married George Sanders on April 2nd, 1949, and divorced him five years later to the day. Looking beyond six, Zsa Zsa's ninth marriage (to Frédéric Prinz von Anhalt) surpassed the combined length of the previous eight.

Among his first six marriages, Mickey had one that reached the eight-year mark, but was tragically cut short when she was murdered in 1966. Again, looking beyond the first six, Mickey managed to have a marriage that lasted the combined lengths of his previous (seven) marriages, to Jan Chamberlin.
5. It wasn't an indecent proposal that led to these two being married for 27 years... which couple was it?

Answer: Robert Redford and Lola Van Wagenen

Each of the couples in this question chose to divorce after their lengthy marriages. What does 'irreconcilable differences' really mean, anyway? Robert and Lola were married on August 9th, 1958, and divorced in 1985. They had four children, although their first died of SIDS. Of the other choices, Morgan and Myrna were married 26 years (1984-2010), Harrison and Melissa for 21 years (1983-2004), and Robin and Marsha for 19 years (1989-2008).
6. John, Paul, George, and Ringo... is love all you really need? Do you know which Beatle's FIRST marriage lasted the longest at 29 years?

Answer: Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman (they first met at a concert in 1966) on March 12th, 1969 and they remained together until her death from breast cancer on April 17th, 1998. He had been engaged beforehand to both Dot Rhone and Jane Asher, but in both cases the engagement was broken off before marrying. Following Linda's death, Paul remarried in 2002 to Heather Mills, subsequently divorcing in 2008. Paul began his third marriage (to Nancy Shevell) in 2011.

John's first marriage was to Cynthia Powell. They were married for six years between 1962 and 1968. In 1969 John married Yoko Ono, and while they were estranged for a time during their marriage, they remained officially wed until John's death in 1980.

George's first marriage was to Pattie Boyd, wed from 1966 to 1977. Subsequently (in 1978), George married Olivia Trinidad Arias, with whom he stayed until his death in 2001.

Ringo married Maureen Cox in 1965, staying together for 10 years. Five years after his 1975 divorce from Maureen, Ringo met Barbara Bach, whom he married the following year (1981).
7. Of these four couples who were married in 1970 - whose marriage lasted the longest? (Hint - They met a year earlier on the set of "Lock Up Your Daughters!")

Answer: Christopher Plummer and Elaine Taylor

Dennis Hopper's marriage to Michelle Phillips (his second marriage) lasted a mere eight days, from October 31st until November 8th, 1970.

Peter Sellers married Miranda Quarry on August 24th, 1970 and they stayed together until 1974. Jackie Gleason began his second marriage on July 4th, 1970 (10 days after finalizing his divorce to his first wife of 34 years). He and Beverly divorced in 1975. Christopher Plummer's third marriage (to Elaine Taylor) began on October 2nd, 1970, and has lasted for over 40 years.
8. This comedic duo were wed in 1930, four years after they met, staying married for 53 years until old age claimed one half of the partnership. You might have seen them in the film "Kid Millions". Who were they?

Answer: Jesse Block and Eve Sully

Jesse Block was introduced to Eve Sully in 1926 by their mutual friend and performer Bert Gordon, and it wasn't long until the two had formed a comedic partnership, touring together for three years before tying the knot in 1930. From there, they added radio, film shorts, and the feature film "Kid Millions" (1934) with Eddie Cantor. The pair retired from public life in 1948, staying happily married until Jesse passed away in 1983 at the age of 82 - they were married for a total of 53 years. Eve passed away in 1990 at the age of 88.

For the other couples presented, here is a brief summary:

George Burns and Gracie Allen also had a long marriage - just not quite so long. They were married in 1926, staying together until Gracie's death of a heart attack in 1964. They were married 38 years in total. George lived until the age of 100, passing away in 1996.

Fred Allen and Portland Hoffa were married in 1927, staying together until Fred's death in 1956 of a heart attack. Portland would go on to a second marriage after her 29-year relationship with Fred, managing 27 years with Joe Rines before he, too, passed away (in 1986). Portland passed away in 1990 at the age of 85.

Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball married in 1940 stayed together 20 years, at which point they divorced. Lucille went on to marry Gary Morton, with whom she stayed until her death in 1989 (28 years married). Desi also remarried, to Edith Mack Hirsch, staying with her for 22 years until her death in 1985. Desi passed away one year later at the age of 69.
9. They met at Northwestern University while they were fellow students in Theatre class, then married in 1944. Ending with the husband's death in 2008, whose marriage lasted 64 years?

Answer: Charlton Heston and Lydia Clarke

Charlton Heston and Lydia Clarke were each other's first and only loves, if their interviews don't lie. Only Heston's death in 2008 ended their relationship. Here is excerpt of an interview published in the "Saturday Evening Post" in 1983, with Heston speaking on marriage:

""I think it is almost certainly harder for an actor to be successfully married to a civilian," says her husband. He attributes their successful marriage to "a degree of mutual tolerance and a willingness to at least sometimes subordinate your own choices to the other's choices. And a sense of humor, and --" He's obviously been asked for marital prescriptions many times before, and seems to rack his brain for some previously overlooked ingredient. "And of course," he deadpans, "an essential ingredient in a successful marriage is a superb husband."

Of the other choices, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were married 50 years when Paul died (in 2008), George Carlin and Brenda Hosbrook were married for 36 years until HER death in 1997 (then he remarried), and Roy Scheider and Cynthia Bebout were married for 26 years before divorcing in 1989 (he also remarried).
10. Which of these multiple-Oscar hosts managed a 69 year marriage with his wife Dolores?

Answer: Bob Hope

This is definitely one for the record books. There aren't many marriages that last 69 years, regardless of whether a celebrity is involved or not. Bob Hope was briefly married prior to wedding Dolores Reade. He had previously been married to Grace Troxell for one year (1933-34). Bob and Dolores' 69-year relationship was far from perfect, but even with Bob's infidelities, they stayed together up until his death in 2003.
