Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. FRIENDLY JEERS greet this American stand-up comedian who specialises in observation comedy in real life and on the small screen.

Answer: Jerry Seinfeld

Jerome Seinfeld, to give him his full name, was born in Brooklyn, New York City, in 1954. His interest in comedy began while he was at college. He began performing at clubs, which led to some television appearances such as in 'Benson'. Seinfeld collaborated with writer Larry David to create a television show about his life, with a regular cast of additional characters.

It began airing in 1989 as 'The Seinfeld Chronicles', later shortened to just 'Seinfeld', continuing until 1998 and establishing itself as one of the most popular television sitcoms.
2. ORANGE SHORE RIG for the lead guitarist of a Liverpool band.

Answer: George Harrison

Harrison was one of the 'fab four', otherwise known as The Beatles. He was the youngest member of the group, all of whom came from Liverpool in the north west of England. As an accomplished songwriter himself, George was often overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, but came into his own when The Beatles split up in 1970.

He had a successful solo career, becoming the first of the former Beatles to have a number one hit with 'My Sweet Lord' in 1970. He formed the group The Traveling Wilburies in 1988 and had further success. George died in 2001 from cancer.
3. SAVED TIBET is the actress who won an Oscar for her role in 'Jezebel' (1938).

Answer: Bette Davis

Davis was born in 1908 and moved to Hollywood to pursue her acting ambitions in 1930. Unusually, she acted using her real name, just changing Betty (short for Elizabeth) to Bette. She appeared regularly on the big screen from 1931 onwards, winning an Oscar for the 1935 film 'Dangerous'.

The part of Julie Marsden, a southern beauty determined to defy convention, earned her a second, and final, Best Actress Oscar in 1938 although she was nominated several more times. Davis died in 1989.
4. RAINS SODA converts to a singer who began in a 'premier' trio before going solo in 1970.

Answer: Diana Ross

Diana Ross was originally one of The Supremes, hence the reference to premier as being a synonym. Along with Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson, Ross had twelve number one hits on the US Billboard charts, and charted in many other countries. Their hits included 'Baby Love' (1964), 'You Can't Hurry Love' (1966) and 'Someday We'll Be Together' (1969). Diana left The Supremes in 1970, but her success continued as a solo artist.
5. SWATHE MILLION creates a multi world champion in Formula 1 motor racing.

Answer: Lewis Hamilton

I imagine Lewis Hamilton is swathed in millions of pounds, and other currencies, since he has become one of the most successful Formula 1 winners of all time. He has been World Champion in 2008, 2014 and 2015, and from 2017 to 2020 inclusive (so far) and runner up three times (at the time of writing), including in his first season of 2007.

He became Sir Lewis Hamilton in 2021 for his services to motor sport and has been outspoken on issues including racism, human rights and environmental matters.
6. 'The Boss' has a BURSTING PRESENCE.

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

Springsteen has long been referred to as 'The Boss', and 'bursting presence' seems an apt anagram of his name since he's instantly recognisable wherever he appears. Born in New Jersey in 1949, Springsteen released his first album in 1973. Called 'Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ' it included the song 'Blinded by the Light' which became a hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1977 after Bruce's own version made little impact.

The setback was temporary, though, with hits such as 'Hungry Heart' (1980), 'Dancing in the Dark' (1984) and 'Streets of Philadelphia' (1994) soon establishing his reputation as both singer and songwriter.
7. Baywatchers could spot this MADONNA PLEASER.

Answer: Pamela Anderson

Canadian born, Pamela Anderson appeared on American television series such as 'Married With Children' and 'Charles in Charge' in the early 1990s before landing an extended role in 'Home Improvement' between 1991 and 1997. For many of us, though, her best known role was in 'Baywatch' wearing a red swimsuit as she portrayed C J Parker, one of the lifeguards on a Californian beach.
8. TINKLE WASTE is another way of describing this British actress whose character survived a famous shipwreck.

Answer: Kate Winslet

From Reading in Berkshire, England, Kate Winslet landed her first role in 1994 when she starred in 'Heavenly Creatures', directed by Peter Jackson. The following year she played Marianne Dashwood in 'Sense and Sensibility' before taking the part of Rose in the blockbuster film 'Titanic' in 1997 opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

As the question told you, Rose survived while Jack (DiCaprio) didn't. Since then her career has gone from strength to strength with her more recent films including 'Steve Jobs' (2015) and 'Black Beauty' (2020) where she provided the voice for the title character - a horse, of course.
9. LIBEL TAGS is the programme needed to find this pioneer in computer technology.

Answer: Bill Gates

Along with Paul Allen, Gates was the founder of Microsoft in 1975, a company which came to dominate the computer business. Gates himself was born in Seattle in 1955 and dropped out of Harvard before completing his degree to concentrate on his budding computer business - a decision he certainly hasn't had cause to regret.

He is one of the wealthiest people in the world - at times, the wealthiest - and has set up a charity, called the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to ensure his money is used to help those in need.
10. ANY GERM should avoid attacking this actress known for her romantic comedy roles.

Answer: Meg Ryan

Born as Margaret Hyra, Meg adapted her real names for the memorable name of Meg Ryan. Her first screen appearance was in the television show 'As the World Turns', playing Betsy Stewart Montgomery Andropoulos between 1982 and 1984. Ryan's big screen credits include the rom-coms 'French Kiss' (1995) with Kevin Kline and 'You've Got Mail' (1998) with Tom Hanks.

Other films have given her more gritty roles, though, including 'Proof of Life', with Russell Crowe, in 2000 as the wife of a kidnap victim.
