Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I won two Oscars, two Tonys, one Grammy and one Emmy in my lifetime, but I started my EGOT status before most of the rest of them were even born, in 1932, when I won my first Oscar for Best Actress in "The Sin of Madelon Claudet". And no one is taking away my title of "First Lady of American Theatre". Who am I?

Answer: Helen Hayes

Helen Hayes accomplished her EGOT by earning her Best Spoken Word Recording Grammy Award in 1977, which means it took her 45 years to complete the feat, from 1932, which was also a record for longest time to complete until Mike Nichols broke it. Hayes also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1986.
2. I won one each of the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys and Grammys, and also was given a Special Achievement Tony and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Oscar. But I bet the rest of you never had a humanoid robot designed after you like I did in 2016, probably because I was such a fashion icon in the 1950s and 1960s. Let's not forget my extensive work with UNICEF. Who am I?

Answer: Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn was ranked #3 on AFI's 1999 list of legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her final appearance in a movie was with Richard Dreyfuss in "Always". While all four choices were fashion icons, Hepburn was the only one close to EGOT status. Having a ballet dance background, her demeanor carried a grace matched by few.

Her Oscar was from an early performance in "Roman Holiday" in 1953, then she won a Tony for Best Actress in a Play the next year.
3. One Oscar, four Emmys, one Grammy, and nine Tony Awards graced my mantel, mostly for directing. My first and my last EGOT awards were an amazing 51 years apart. That is a long career. I believe I am unique by being the first EGOT born in Germany. Can you "graduate" from this question by knowing my identity? I was actually born Mikhail Igor Peschkowsky. What did you know me as?

Answer: Mike Nichols

The other three options are people that Mike Nichols worked with to garner the success he had in a career spanning over half a century. Mike directed two Tony winning plays written by Neil Simon, "Barefoot In the Park" and "The Odd Couple". One of his early movie projects was directing Dustin Hoffman in "The Graduate".

He started his accolades in 1961 winning a Grammy for a comedy album with early comedy partner Elaine May and solidified his EGOT with Emmy for directing "Wit", an HBO miniseries in 2001.

He won his final award in 2012 directing "Death of a Salesman" on Broadway.
4. Sealing up a 2012 Tony Award for work on the musical "Newsies" put me into the EGOT Club. But my EGOT claim to fame is I was the first EGOT to win eight Oscars. I won all eight of my Oscars in four different years for four Disney movies. Who am I, who opened "A Whole New World" of EGOT winners with eight Oscars?

Answer: Alan Menken

Alan Menken and his original musical partner Howard Ashman revived the Disney animated musical with their musical compositions in "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast". But Menken wrote the score of all of the movies, so he was eligible to gain a Best Original Score Oscar each year in addition to the Best Original Song Oscar. So he hit the Oscar Exacta for both movies. Ashman died of AIDS-related illness in 1991, and Tim Rice helped on "Aladdin" and Stephen Schwartz stepped in for the music on "Pocahontas", and the two also earned Menken four Oscars, one for the song "A Whole New World".

His work on "Newsies" got Alan a Tony, and much of his work on the Disney movies doubled up on earning his double digit Grammys.
5. I won two Emmys and one each of the other three EGOT awards very early in my career (by 1977), starting my award winning in 1962 with an Oscar for "West Side Story". But who else in the EGOT club can say they were the first EGOT cast member of the iconic 1970's children's show "Electric Company"?

Answer: Rita Moreno

Actually this entire list of choices are alumni of the original "Electric Company", and each has earned a portion of the four awards, but Rita Moreno is the first one to complete the EGOT, which was done in 1977. She had the Oscar prior to the debut of "Electric Company" in 1971, which was responsible for her Grammy portion of her EGOT.

She continued acting into her late eighties as a cast member on the Netflix reboot series "One Day at a Time".
6. I have four Grammys and Emmys each, another three Oscars and a Tony, all from performing and arranging music and musical productions. With a career like that, I can safely I am the only one who had Liza Minnelli, Aretha Franklin, and Barbra Streisand perform at my memorial service, performing my signature compositions like "Nobody Does it Better", "If You Really Knew Me", and "The Way We Were". Who might I be?

Answer: Marvin Hamlisch

Franklin, Streisand, and Minnelli performed his signature songs "Nobody Does it Better", "If You Really Knew Me", and "The Way We Were" at a memorial service in Marvin Hamlisch's home of New York City. Being associated with so many iconic productions of the 1970s, Hamlisch was a go-to guy after a white hot three years, being the man behind the music of "The Way We Were", "The Sting" and "A Chorus Line".
7. Winning an Oscar for writing the song "Glory" from the movie "Selma", daytime and Primetime Emmys, a Tony Award for producing a play revival, and double digit Grammys? You can probably guess I'm a musician. But what sets me apart from the rest of these EGOT's is none of the rest of them married a "Sports Illustrated" Swimsuit cover model. While I'm not Jesus Christ, I'm certainly a "Superstar". Who am I?

Answer: John Legend

John Legend earned his first award of the four, earning Best New Artist at the 2006 Grammy Awards. He performed as Jesus in a live on-air performance of "Jesus Christ Superstar" on NBC in 2018 and joined the group who produced it in winning the Emmy for Best Live Performance Program.

He was producer of the revival of the play "Jitney", which won Best Play Revival at the 2017 Tonys. So Legend accomplished three of the four in the EGOT in the span of four years. Add to the fact he won one of his many Grammys in the off year of the other awards in that four years, he became the first person to win the EGOT requirements in a four year span.
8. After an Oscar, one Emmy, and three Tonys early in my versatile career, I got my EGOT completed with a special Grammy Legend Award in 1990. But one thing sets me apart from the rest of the EGOT Club is I had a mother who was only one of the awards away from joining me in the same club. But she died before she saw my signature performance on "Cabaret". Who would I be?

Answer: Liza Minnelli

Liza Minnelli was born in 1946, the daughter of Judy Garland. Judy had won a special Juvenile Oscar (a now defunct award) prior to Liza's birth, and Liza was able to see her mother win multiple Grammys, along with a special Tony Award in 1952. Minnelli started her string of awards prior to her mother's death, winning her first of four Tony Awards. Liza Minnelli was at her peak in the early 1970s, winning her Oscar as Sally Bowles in "Cabaret", and winning an Emmy in 1973 performing on a variety program called "Liza with a Z".
9. I am the winner of three Tony Awards, and one each of the other three. I completed my EGOT in 1991. But I set a record that will be difficult to break, I completed my EGOT at the ripe old age of 87, before my death in 2000. Dudley Moore was wonderful to work with while earning my Oscar. Who am I?

Answer: John Gielgud

Gielgud experienced something unheard of nowadays, he was arrested for homosexual activity in 1953, as all acts of the sort were illegal at the time in Britain. But, encouraged by his fellow thespians, he got back on the stage in the production he was already involved in to a supportive standing ovation. Playing against Dudley Moore in the comedy "Arthur", he earned his first Oscar as Hobson the butler.
10. With double digit EGOT awards I started winning in 1967, I did all right. But all of you are SO DOUR! None of you schmos can say you directed three movies in the 2000 list of AFI 100 Comedy Films of all time. All right, maybe...maybe you had a part in three of them, but not in the top fifteen! Who gives a Schmecken whether or not they are politically correct anymore. I'M not politically correct anymore! When you been on this Earth 2,000 years, you couldn't careless! Who am I?

Answer: Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks is one of the most beloved comedy artists around. In a calendar year, he was responsible for "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein", two of the top fifteen comedic films of all time according to the American Film Institute (the third he was involved in was "The Producers" from 1967).

He brought back his "2,000 Year Old Man" character for an album in the year 2000 which won him his Grammy. In addition to all the comedy genius, he plays a mean set of drums; he was taught early by another resident of Brooklyn named Buddy Rich.
11. I started my EGOT journey in 1986, won an Oscar along the way no one thought I had a "Ghost" of a chance of winning, and achieved EGOT level in 2002 with a Tony for behind the scenes work on "Thoroughly Modern Millie". One thing the rest of you can never say? I was the first African American to get the EGOT. Another, none of the rest can say they were the center square on Hollywood Squares. Who would I be?

Answer: Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi won an Oscar for "Ghost", and her Tony for co-producing "Thoroughly Modern Millie". A performance on Broadway of her character-driven comedy won a Grammy also. After all the success, Goldberg was approached to be the permanent center square during her time on a new syndicated reboot of "Hollywood Squares".
12. Winning a Tony Award in 2016 made me the first EGOT winner with over 30 of the total awards, mostly Grammys. Another thing that separates me is I produced the biggest-selling, non-compilation record album of all time. So what's the A to this puzzling "Q"?

Answer: Quincy Jones

28 Grammys spanning 55 years, Quincy Jones has established himself as one of the first you think of to put on the music producer Mt. Rushmore. Quincy did the music composition for the miniseries "Roots" which earned him his Emmy. And he worked on the Broadway revival of "The Color Purple" which earned him his Tony. And all the humanitarian work he did, starting with Martin Luther King and continuing with his own foundation gained him his special Oscar, but he also had been nominated seven times for actual Oscar awards.
13. Beyond the earned EGOT, I was, for a time, the highest earning composer on the planet in the 1980s, having rewritten the catalog for most memorable Broadway plays. I joined the EGOT club at the same time as two others now in the club for the same television production. One thing the rest of the club probably can't say is that they ever owned a Picasso. I did until I sold it to benefit my own foundation. So "don't cry for me", I'm doing OK. Who am I?

Answer: Andrew Lloyd Webber

Andrew Lloyd Webber also achieved the title of Sir by being knighted in 1992. Between "Cats" and "Phantom of the Opera", and another handful of other productions, he solidified his status as the new bar on Broadway and his home country's West End. He joined John Legend and Tim Rice as EGOT winners with the Emmy win for the live aired production of "Jesus Christ Superstar".

He purchased "Portrait of Angel Fernández de Soto" by Pablo Picasso in 1995. Once he sold it seventeen years later, he profited 17 million pounds.
14. With one Oscar for acting and one for music and a nice collection of the other three awards, the one thing of my EGOT I didn't earn was my Tony. I was granted a special Tony Award for for Star of the Decade in 1970. But with that special Tony, I became the youngest EGOT winner at the age of 28. And nobody else in the EGOT Club has eclipsed 50 certified Gold albums. Some find me a "funny" female, who am I?

Answer: Barbra Streisand

"Babs" earned three of the four awards on the first eligible performance for their respective requirements. "Funny Girl" was her first movie performance and earned her an Oscar. "The Barbra Streisand Album", her debut album, won her first Grammy. And her first television special based on a later album, "My Name is Barbra", was her first Emmy.

Her work on the Broadway stage was somewhat minimal, she basically retired from Broadway in 1966, preferring the concert method of performing on stage. Her 52 Gold albums is second only to Elvis Presley.
15. An honorary Oscar in 2011, after I earned the other three prior, put me in the EGOT Club. But what separates me from the rest of this club? I made one million dollars for saying "This is CNN". No one else in the club can say that. Who am I?

Answer: James Earl Jones

James Earl Jones actually grew up with a stutter, but it was training in the arts that showed him the way out of the stutter. Blessed with a voice that could fill any arena without amplification, he entered into professional Shakespeare in the 1960s. He reached Broadway earning a Tony for his lead role in "The Great White Hope" and an Oscar nomination for the film adaptation of the same.

The masses discovered him after he was picked to do the voice of Darth Vader in the highest earning movie at the time, "Star Wars". Ted Turner paid him a million dollars to do the voice over work on the promo commercials for CNN, which ran for years.
