Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born February 8, 1931, in Marion, Indiana, James Dean was 24 when he was killed in California while driving his racecar. Although he had minor uncredited appearances and bit parts in a few other films, he is best known for major roles in how many movies?

Answer: three

Still one of Hollywood's biggest icons, Jimmy's film career was only eighteen months long. He received two posthumous Oscar nominations in acting categories - the first actor in Academy history to do so. The three films for which Jimmy was known were "Rebel Without a Cause," "East of Eden," and "Giant" (It was the last two for which he received his Oscar nominations).

He is buried in Fairmount, Indiana, his boyhood home.
2. Jean Harlow was Hollywood's first blonde bombshell, her beauty and glamour helping Americans through the Depression. She died of uremic poisoning caused by acute nephritis when she was 26 (that's complications from a kidney infection to you and me). What Midwestern city was she from?

Answer: Kansas City

Harlow's second husband, Paul Bern, "officially" committed suicide in one of Hollywood's greatest mysteries. The home he died in was later owned by Jay Sebring, a victim of the Manson Family.

River Jude Bottom was born in a log cabin on August 23, 1970. A child of the counterculture and a lifetime vegetarian, he struggled with a drug problem for many years. I still miss him.
4. Buddy Holly (Sept 1936 - Feb 1959), a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one of the pioneers of the genre, was only 22 when he was killed in a plane crash with Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. Buddy's bass player gave up his seat on the plane to Richardson, saving his life. This musician grew up, got a recording contract of his own, and became famous. What is his name?

Answer: Waylon Jennings

When Buddy kidded Jennings about having to ride on the cold bus instead of getting to fly in the warm plane, Jennings told him he "hoped his plane crashed." It is a comment that took Jennings years to forgive himself for. Interestingly enough, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson were both under 30: 17 and 28, respectivly.
5. Heather O'Rourke was only twelve when she died from an intestinal blockage. Known for playing Carol Ann in the "Poltergeist" films, she was also well-known for her role on what classic sitcom?

Answer: Happy Days

Heather played Heather Pfister, the daughter of Fonzie's girlfriend, Ashley, in later seasons. Dominique Dunne, who played her sister, Dana, in "Poltergeist," also died young. She was murdered by her boyfriend, just days shy of her 22nd birthday.
6. Rapper/actor Tupac Shakur died a violent and controversial death after living a violent and controversial life. He was gunned down at the age of 25 after watching a boxing match in Las Vegas. His mother had her own interesting background, having been a member of what controversial 1960s group?

Answer: The Black Panthers

Rapper The Notorious B.I.G. (Christopher Wallace) was gunned down in Los Angeles under equally mysterious circumstances six months later. He was 24.
7. Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain make up what Cobain's mother has called "that stupid club:" musicians who all died at the age of 27. A charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame also died at 27, though he is less known. Do you know who he is?

Answer: Robert Johnson

A Delta Blues guitarist, Johnson was inducted under the catagory of "Early Influences," those who weren't part of Rock and Roll, but helped build the bridge to it. Eric Clapton calls Johnson, "The most important blues musician who ever lived" and has recorded Johnson's most famous song, "Crossroads." Johnson died under mysterious circumstances in 1938.
8. Stunningly beautiful R&B singer and actress Aaliyah died in a plane crash at the age of twenty-two. Any ideas what her last name was?

Answer: Haughton

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. She was discovered on "Star Search" and later attended Detroit's High School of the Performing Arts, majoring in dance. She died on August 25, 2001, flying from The Bahamas to Florida.
9. Fans of Tejano music were stunned when their biggest icon, Selena Perez was murdered in 1995, at the age of 23. Perez was her married name. Remember what her maiden name was?

Her production company, Q Productions, was run by her father, Abraham. She enjoyed a short but happy marriage to Chris Perez before she was gunned down by a deranged fan.
10. Up-and-coming actress Sharon Tate was 26 years old (and 8-1/2 months pregnant) when she was murdered by the Manson Family in 1969. Her film director husband was out of the country at the time and his life was spared. What is the name of her famous husband?

Answer: Roman Polanski

Polanski, famous for his films "Rosemary's Baby" and "Chinatown," is still making movies, including "The Pianist" (2002) which won three Academy Awards (including one to Roman for Best Director). It took him twenty years to marry again. He has also had the privilege of becoming a father to a boy and a girl, Morgane and Elvis. Elvis Polanski?! Oh, those eccentric European filmmakers!
