Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eli Wallach
Answer: Anne Jackson
Talk about togetherness: actors Eli Wallach (1915-2014) and Anne Jackson (1925-2016) were married in 1948 and remained together for 66 years until Mr. Wallach's death in 2014. Eli was one of Hollywood's finest and most sought after character actors; he made his Broadway debut in "The Rose Tattoo" for which he won a Tony Award in 1951.
He appeared in such films as "The Misfits", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "The Magnificent Seven". Anne Jackson had her own career appearing in films like "The Shining", "Folks!" and "A Woman Called Golda".
The pair starred together in 1946 in Tennessee Williams' "This Property Is Condemned", in "Rhinoceros", and so many more.
2. Mel Brooks
Answer: Anne Bancroft
I find it amazing that Anna Maria Louise Italiano and Melvin James Brooks Kaminsky, two apparent total opposites, were married from 1964 until Anne Bancroft's death in 2005. Forty-one years of marriage between "The Producers"' Mel Brooks and "The Miracle Workers"' Anne Bancroft had a sort of beauty and the beast quality or comedy meets tragedy.
In fact, one of Mel's quotes was "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die". Bronx-born Anne, the seductress 'Mrs. Robinson', and Brooklyn-born Mel from "Blazing Saddles", starred in only one film together, "To Be or Not to Be" in 1983...Serious title, funny movie!
3. Hume Cronyn
Answer: Jessica Tandy
Canadian-born actor Hume Cronyn (1911-2003) was married to British born Jessica Tandy (1909-1994) for fifty-two years, until Tandy's death in 1994. She won two Tony Awards for "Foxfire" (1983) and "The Gin Game" (1978); she was also awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress for 1990's "Driving Miss Daisy". Tandy and Cronyn first co-starred in the movie "The Green Years" in 1946. Prior to that, Hume Cronyn had been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the 1944 film "The Seventh Cross"; he also won three Emmy Awards for: "Age-Old Friends (1989), "Broadway Bound" (1992) and "To Dance with the White Dog" (1993). So much talent in just one couple!
4. David Bowie
Answer: Iman Abdulmajid
Singer/actor David Bowie (1947-2016) was born David Robert Jones in England. Bowie married Somalian model, actress and entrepreneur Iman in 1992 and they remained together for 24 years until David's death. Iman revealed that the secret to their long-lasting marriage, which defied Hollywood statistics, was "they each were at a point in their lives where they could commit to each other completely". Bowie was an innovator in his music and his presentation; he was constantly reinventing himself in ingenious ways that kept him at the top for so many years. Iman has been in movies like "Out of Africa", has had roles on TV, and created her own cosmetics firm in 1994.
5. Robert Sterling
Answer: Anne Jeffries
Actor Robert Sterling (1917-2006) married Anne Jeffries (1923-2015) after his divorce from TV actress Anne Southern of "Private Secretary" was final. They were married up until Sterling's death in 2006. Robert Sterling and Anne Jeffries played a couple of spoiled 'dead ghosts', George and Marion Kirby, who were killed in an automobile accident with their tipsy dog Neil.
The TV show from 1953 was based on the 1937 movie "Topper", where George and Marion decide to take up permanent residence with their former banker, Cosmo G. Topper; the hilarity is just beginning, and Cosmo seems to be the 'butt' of all the jokes.
6. Blake Edwards
Answer: Julie Andrews
American film director Blake Edwards (1922-2010) had one of the longest marriages in Hollywood. Julie and Blake were married for 41 years, from 1969 until Blake's death in 2010. I think one could say that Miss Andrews is one of the best liked and most famous actresses in the world. Like Mary Pickford from Canada was called "America's Sweetheart", Julie seems to have picked the title up and made it her own, even though she is distinctly British. Eliza Doolittle, Mary Poppins, a problem like Maria...all parts made richer by the incredible talent of Julie Andrews, with the support and talent of Blake Edwards.
7. Danny DeVito
Answer: Rhea Perlman
Danny DeVito grew up in Asbury, New Jersey; to keep himself out out trouble after boarding school, Danny begged his father to send him to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts where he got his training and where he would find his future partner, Rhea Perlman (Carla from "Cheers") whom he married in 1982. Danny and Rhea have three grown children together: Lucy, Grace and Jacob Daniel. Danny and Rhea played opposite each other on "Taxi" among other works despite a separation in 2012 and a reconciliation the following year.
8. Matthew Broderick
Answer: Sarah Jessica Parker
Matthew Broderick was born in New York City in 1962, the son of actor James Broderick. He has played almost every kind of role: funny, serious, even animated, as the voice of adult Simba in "The Lion King" in 1994. He has appeared in "Biloxi Blues", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" ("Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?") "Inspector Gadget" and even in "The Music Man" as Professor Harold Hill. Sarah Jessica Parker has also had quite a career, including playing Carrie Bradshaw on "Sex and the City". Sarah was introduced to Matthew by one of her brothers, and they were married on May 19, 1997.
They have a son, James, and twin daughters Marion and Tabitha.
9. William H. Macy
Answer: Felicity Huffman
William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman were married in 1997, right after Macy's amazing portrayal of car salesman Jerry Lundegaard, who sets the whole plot of the Coen Brothers movie "Fargo" (1996) in motion. In 2011, Macy began playing the role of Frank Gallagher, single father of six, on Showtime's "Shameless". Felicity Huffman was one of the four protagonists on the TV show "Desperate Housewives" from 2004 through 2012.
In 2005 she put in an amazing performance as the transgendered Bree Osborne in the movie "Transamerica". Felicity was the youngest of eight children, and she and William have children of their own.
10. Ossie Davis
Answer: Ruby Dee
One of the greatest film couples of TV, stage and screen in the last century would have to include the great Ossie Davis (1917-2005) and his wife Ruby Dee (1922-2014) who were married from 1948 until Davis died in 2005. The couple had to face issues of stereotyping, racism, prejudice and hatred throughout their careers--but somehow seemed to transcend it.
Their performances brought out the common spirit and hardships of all people who, despite the difficulties still managed to thrive, and taught us all how to live.
