Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Lucas was born on May 14, 1944, in California. While pursuing a career in film was an interest to him, it was not his first real passion growing up. What did George Lucas want to be before he chose film making?

Answer: Race Car Driver

Lucas was born to George Lucas Sr. and Dorothy Lucas in Modesto, California. While growing up in California, Lucas had a passion for racing. However, after a car crash, he decided racing wasn't a viable career. He did have an interest in film making, which he pursued while attending college.
2. George Lucas received his Fine Arts degree from which of these universities?

Answer: USC

Lucas initially attended Modesto Junior College, and though he did not study film there, he did begin shooting different material with a basic eight millimeter camera. He would eventually transfer to USC, and graduate in 1967 with a degree in fine arts. After being turned down for military service, he became a graduate student at USC, with a focus on film production.
3. After finding critical acclaim with "THX 1138," Lucas was spurred on to his next project, which he directed and co-wrote with Francis Ford Coppola. Which movie was it?

Answer: American Graffiti

"American Graffiti" (1973) was both written and directed by Lucas. Because of the success of the film, his production studio, Lucasfilm, was able to really begin to develop into the company that it would ultimately become, which aided in the success of "Star Wars."
4. As Lucas began what would become his most famous work, "Star Wars," he tried to get a film studio to take on the project. Only one film studio was willing to take on the project.

Answer: True

Despite offering "Star Wars" to multiple film studios, only one studio was willing to take on the project. Other studios like Universal and Disney turned down the project because they felt that the story was too odd to be successful. 20th Century Fox was the studio that ultimately took "Star Wars." The project hit major issues multiple times, and was threatened to be shut down.

It was only because of Lucas' success with "American Graffiti" that he had enough support to keep the project alive.
5. After the success of "Star Wars" in 1977, Lucas decided to continue the story with "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi." Did Lucas expect "Star Wars" to be a big success?

Answer: No

George Lucas never believed that "Star Wars" would be a big success. Other films at the time were expected to be bigger hits. Lucas even spent time during the film's release on a Hawaiian vacation with his wife, and didn't know how successful the release was until he saw the evening news.

After Episode Four gave him and 20th Century Fox huge financial success, Lucas was able and willing to produce the next two films in the "Star Wars" franchise.
6. George Lucas faced some dark times in his life, losing much of the money he had made through his career in one instance. What happened?

Answer: Divorce

Lucas had married his wife, Marcia, in 1969, the two having met in college at USC. Marcia won the 1978 Academy Award for "Best Film Editing" for her work on "Star Wars", alongside her husband. The two ultimately divorced in 1983, after the release of "Return of the Jedi." When the divorce was finally settled, Marcia left with around $50 million.
7. George Lucas was within the age range to be drafted by the military, and was originally drafted by the Army to serve in Vietnam. What condition does Lucas have that excluded him from military service?

Answer: Diabetes

Diabetes prevented Lucas from serving in Vietnam. It was only during the medical tests ran for his military service that his diabetes was discovered. Diabetes for Lucas was passed down genetically, as it was the cause of death of his paternal grandfather.
8. While "Star Wars" is George Lucas' best success and most popular achievement to date, he also created another highly successful film franchise starting in 1981. While Lucas was the executive producer of the series, his good friend Stephen Spielberg directed it. With which other series did the two have huge success?

Answer: Indiana Jones

"Indiana Jones" was another successful creation from the mind of George Lucas. Stephen Spielberg directed the first three films in the series, and the fourth wasn't developed for several years after the original trilogy. Lucas and Spielberg originally agreed to produce five "Indiana Jones" films with Paramount Studios.

After the third, the franchise stalled out, and didn't resume until "The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" was released in 2008. Spielberg also directed the fourth installment, while Lucas was the executive producer, just like the first three.
9. In 2013, Lucas remarried, tying the knot with a woman who was chairwoman of Dreamworks Animation at the time. Who was his second wife?

Answer: Mellody Hobson

Mellody Hobson served as chairwoman for Dreamworks Animation until 2016. She married Lucas at Skywalker Ranch in 2013. The two have one child together, while Lucas adopted two children between marriages, and one adopted during his first marriage to Marcia Griffin.
10. In 2012, George Lucas sold Lucasfilm for $4 billion to what company?

Answer: Disney

Lucas decided to retire from blockbuster film making, which lead him to sell Lucasfilm to Disney. Lucasfilm was then placed under the direction of Kathleen Kennedy. Disney and Lucasfilm then developed the sequel trilogy, episodes seven, eight, and nine, with some creative consulting from George Lucas himself.
