He was born Clarence LeRoy Van Cleef, Jr. in 1925. His stage name is a contraction of his middle name.
2. In which state of the USA was Lee Van Cleef born?

Answer: New Jersey

He was born in the town of Somerville, Somerset County, New Jersey. He worked there as an accountant prior to becoming an actor.
3. Lee Van Cleef made his movie debut in which classic 1952 Western?

Answer: High Noon

Lee played the part of Jack Colby, one of the members of Frank Miller's gang. His character was shot and killed by Amy Kane, played by Grace Kelly.
4. Lee Van Cleef made guest appearances in a number of Western TV series during the 1950s/60s. Which of these series did he NOT appear in?

Answer: The Virginian

"The Virginian" is actually one of the very few Western series in which he didn't make an appearance. As well as those listed, he also made appearances in "Annie Oakley", "The Adventures of Kit Carson", "Casey Jones", "Tombstone Territory", "Maverick", "The Rifleman" and many more.

Lee Van Cleef played the part of Reese, whilst his namesake, Lee Marvin , played the part of Liberty Valance. The man who shot Liberty Valance turned out to be Doniphon, played by John Wayne.

Lee plays the part of bounty hunter Colonel Douglas Mortimer, whilst Clint Eastwood plays the part of "the man with no name". Both are after the head of El Indio, but whilst Clint is after the bounty money, Lee is seeking to avenge the rape of his sister by Indio - she had killed herself afterwards.
7. The second Sergio Leone film to feature Lee Van Cleef was "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". What was the name of his character in this film?

Answer: Angel Eyes

Rather apt, given his piercing beady eyes, Lee played the part of "Angel Eyes/The Bad". Clint Eastwood was "Blondie/The Good", Eli Wallach was "Tuco/The Ugly" and Antonio Molino Rojo played the part of Captain Harper.
8. Not ALL of Lee van Cleef's film roles were in Westerns. In which John Carpenter sci-fi movie did he appear in 1981?

Answer: Escape from New York

This film featured a New York of the future in which Manhattan had been turned into a giant prison. Lee plays the part of Police Commissioner Bob Hauk.
9. Lee Van Cleef played the part of ninja master John Peter McAllister in which 1984 TV series?

This short-lived NBC series lasted just 13 episodes. Lee's character was an aging ninja master, whilst Timothy Van Patten played the part of his pupil, Max Keller. The pair travel around the USA in an old van, searching for Lee's daughter, and get involved in various adventures along the way.
10. Sadly, Lee Van Cleef passed away in 1989; what was the cause of his death?

Answer: Heart attack

Lee was just 64 years old when he died of a heart attack at his home in Oxnard, California. He was buried at Forest Lawn in Hollywood. His headstone is inscribed with the words "Best of the Bad".
