The Morgans, a family of Black sharecroppers in Louisiana in 1933, face a serious family crisis when the husband and father, Nathan Lee Morgan, is convicted of stealing a ham from a nearby smokehouse to feed his hungry family and sent to a prison camp. Cicely Tyson was nominated for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama and later in 2018, won the Academy Honorary Award for this film.

Cicely Tyson had a smaller role in this miniseries based on the best selling book by Alex Haley, portraying the mother of Kunte Kinte, who was captured in Africa by slave traders, taken to America, and sold into slavery. She was nominated for an award for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Comedy or Drama Series.
3. "A Woman Called Moses" (1978 TV Miniseries)

This film is about a 99 year old woman recalling her life as a 14 year old bride of a 55 year old Civil War veteran. In flashback, Cicely portrays a slave named Castalia, who belonged to the Marsden family, and stays on after the war to be a servant. She likes to do sarcastic imitations of her employer. Cicely won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries award.

This miniseries is about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights leader, who was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. Cicely was nominated for the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series award for her portrayal of King's wife Coretta, who took on the leadership of the struggle for racial equality herself and became active in the Women's Movement.

10. "The Rosa Parks Story" (2002 Film)

This film is about Rosa Parks, a civil rights activist, who was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a racially segregated bus. Cicely portrays Leona McCauley, Rosa's mother, a school teacher who instilled in Rosa the importance of faith, self-respect, and education. In 2003, the Black Reel Award went to Cicely as Best Supporting Actress.
