Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was George Carlin born?

Answer: May 12th, 1937

George Denis Patrick Carlin was born on May 12, 1937 in Manhattan, a borough of New York City. He was raised Roman Catholic but his later acts proved he wasn't practising.
2. George was known for a certain number of words that can not be used on Radio and/or Television. What was that number?

Answer: seven

George was known for the "Seven words that you can't say on Radio or Television". These are the same words that can't be used in a quiz or in any family friendly web page.

A man and his son listening to Carlin's act on radio in 1973, complained to the FCC saying that he heard obscene material. The case went to the Supreme Court where they agreed with lower courts that the material was indecent but not obscene. It was at this time, that new laws were established so indecent material was not broadcast when children were likely to be the audience.
3. George joined what military group?

Answer: United States Air Force

After his high school years, he joined the United States Air Force. George trained as a radar technician while he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base.

He was not successful in his military career as he was discharged. He started working as a disc jockey at a radio station in Shreveport during his initial military career. It was during his radio shows that he found his calling.
4. George appeared in "The Simpsons" where he played a hippie. What was the character's name?

Answer: Munchie

George played Munchie in an episode of "The Simpsons" in season 10, airing November 15th, 2008. He, along with Martin Mull (Seth), played two hippies who knew Homer's mother back in the '60s. Homer wanted to find out what his middle initial J. stood for.

Munchie and Seth were now successful business men who made organic juice. In true Homer fashion, he ruined their juice facility and tried to replenish it from Munchie and Seth's personal garden. By the way, Homer's middle name was Jay.
5. George provided a voice in a children's television program.

Answer: True

George was the narrator of "Thomas and Friends" from 1991 to 1998. He was a part of the US series.

"Thomas and Friends" was based on series of books written by the Reverend Wilbert V. Awdry called the "The Railway Series". The books contained stories of Thomas (a steam engine), Henry and Edward (blue and green engines) who lived in the fictional land of Sodor. My favourite character was Sir Topham Hatt now known as The Fat Controller. He was in charge of all the engines.
6. What was the name of the character that George played in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)"?

Answer: Rufus

"Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" (1989) starred Alex Winter as Bill, Keanu Reeves as Ted and the great George Carlin as Rufus.
In the movie, Bill and Ted would not graduate from high school because they were failing history. In some strange twist of fate, Rufus appeared and helped them travel through time to learn first hand about history. It was a very funny movie!
7. George provided the voice for what car in the movie "Cars"?

Answer: Fillmore

George played Fillmore in "Cars" (2006). This role was perfect for George. He played a hippie who was a Volkswagen MicroBus. It even had funky, psychedelic paint.

"Cars" (2006) was an animated movie made by Pixar. George voiced Fillmore along with such other stars as Paul Newman, Cheech Marin, Tony Shalhoub and Owen Wilson. It was a great story about car racing.
8. George was in the movie "The Prince of Tides".

Answer: True

George played Eddie Detreville, Savannah's gay neighbor in "The Prince of Tides" (1991). It was a movie based on a 1986 novel by Pat Conroy. This movie was about a man (Nick Nolte) who was trying to deal with his horrible childhood. His twin sister's psychiatrist (Barbra Streisand) required his help in order for his sister Savannah to get better.

George said this was his greatest character he ever played in a movie. I guess working with Barbra Streisand, Nick Nolte and Melinda Dillon has its benefits.
9. George was a writer for what comedy show from 1971-1973?

Answer: The Flip Wilson Show

George was a writer and performer on "The Flip Wilson Show" (1970-1974). Flip Wilson was a great comedian. This variety show featured such talent as George Carlin and Tim Conway.

George was not a writer on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In" (1968-1973), although he would have certainly fit in. George was not a writer on "Good Times" (1974-1979). "The Sonny and Cher Show" (1976-1977) was not a show George was involved with in the 1970s.
10. What school did George attend in high school?

Answer: Cardinal Hayes High School

George attended Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx in New York City. He did not graduate but was expelled from the school and never went back.

Regis Philbin and Martin Scorsese were both graduates from that school.

He did not attend Julliard and Roxboro and Cicero were the schools I attended in Syracuse, New York.
