quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this movie Alan portrayed a character who wasn't so much alive (he was dead, in other words). What was the movie title?

Answer: Truly, Madly, Deeply

Costarring Juliet Stevenson, this was a lovely, funny, poignant tear-jerker of a movie. Referred to as "the thinking person's 'Ghost'," it was sadly overshadowed by 'Ghost', and many people missed the superior movie.
2. For a play performed within the movie, Alan portrayed the quintessential Captain Hook. This movie costarred Hugh Grant at his slimiest best. The movie title, please?

Answer: An Awfully Big Adventure

This movie centers on a small repertory theatre company in post-WWII Liverpool. Rickman is tremendous as the actor O'Hara, but it is a truly sad and somewhat disturbing movie. I would love to see him do a full version of 'Peter Pan.' By the way, the title of the movie comes from the book "The Adventures of Peter Pan," in which Peter refers to death as "an awfully big adventure."
3. I think this is the only Jane Austen movie adaption that my beloved Alan has appeared in. He was heroic, if somewhat melancholy. And his reading from "The Faerie Queene" near the end of the movie brought our relationship to a new level! (Sigh)

Answer: Sense and Sensibility

Since I'm a "Janeite" and (as you know) deeply involved with Alan Rickman, this pairing was made in heaven for Yours Truly. Emma Thompson cast Alan as Colonel Brandon and adapted the part to suit him admirably -- reciting Spenser, carrying Marianne in from the rainstorm...all sublime. ("The air is full of spices!" Aaaah!)
4. In a bit of a departure, Alan played his police detective character in the crime thriller "The Judas Kiss" with a different accent. What was the accent?

Answer: Southern American

Well, I'm not sure I could have been any more accurate. It just seemed odd coming out of his perfect British mouth. At least I could understand him -- Emma Thompson was in the movie too as an FBI agent, and I could barely catch a thing she said! (Greg Wise was another cast member, which makes two movies the three of them have done together, "Sense and Sensibility" being the other).
5. Not a human this time, not even a former human. Alan portrayed an angel in this movie. Its cast included lots of famous names, including a 60's comedian, a singer and two "wunderkind" Hollywood guys.

Answer: Dogma

I didn't care for this movie about a couple of angels "gone bad." I think it might be one of those "either you love it or hate it" movies. But Alanis Morrisette as God? Please!
6. Here is another movie in which Alan portrayed an actor. His character lamented the role in which he'd been typecast and was prone to panic attacks before public appearances. This is an hilarious movie costarring Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shaloub and Tim Allen.

Answer: Galaxy Quest

"Galaxy Quest" takes a look at the cast of a defunct sci-fi show whose professional lives are reduced to appearances at sci-fi conventions and mall openings. Things change for the crew, however, when some real aliens show up asking for their help.

"Give him a hand -- he's British!"
7. Here's something you don't see too often. A movie with a cast of two! Alan costarred with Madeleine Stowe.

Answer: Closet Land

"The Winter Guest" is a movie about the sticky relationship between a mother and daughter that A.R. directed and co-wrote, starring Emma Thompson and Phyllida Law. "Close My Eyes" is probably the only Rickman movie I never want to see -- the subject matter (incest) seems too repulsive to me! "Mesmer," with Alan in the title role, is a biography of the controversial eighteenth century Viennese physician, Franz Anton Mesmer.
8. What instrument does Alan's character play in "Truly, Madly, Deeply"?

Answer: cello

This film focuses on Nina, a woman unable to move beyond her grief at the loss of her love. So strong is her need that Jamie retuns. Nina is renewed, but then must face the reality of what life with Jamie had actually been like (not to mention the inconveniences that come from cohabiting w/ a dead guy!). Jamie had been a professional cellist. Though A.R. did not do the actual playing, he did a very convincing job of faking it.
9. This 1988 action hit was the first movie Rickman ever appeared in. As is often the case, he was cast as the bad guy.

Answer: Die Hard

In "Die Hard," Bruce Willis plays a NY policeman who happens to be in a LA office buiding when it has been taken over by terrorists (led by Rickman), and its inhabitants held hostage. His first venture into movie making, Alan had to learn quickly that no one cared what his "motivation" was for each action. (Makes me think of his Alexander Dane character in "Galaxy Quest"!)
10. People are probably most familiar with Alan Rickman through his portrayal of Professor Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" film series. Was he J.K. Rowling's primary choice to play that role?

Answer: Yes

Rowling gave much detailed information to Rickman regarding Snape's future. Wouldn't you like to know what she said?!
11. One of this movie's funniest and famous lines was spoken by Mr. Rickman: "Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas!"

Answer: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Rumor has it that the movie's big-name star (and co-producer) had no idea what he was getting when Rickman was cast. Alan so effortlessly stole the movie that the disgruntled star saw to it that many of A.R.'s best scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. He certainly didn't get them all though. Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham is still the best thing about that movie.
12. Alan Rickman starred in an HBO movie about a famous Russian. Can you name the man?

Answer: Rasputin

"Rasputin" (1996) explored the "mad monk" and his relationship with Tsar Nicholas's family and the royal court. This man makes a fascinating subject of study, and I can't imagine anyone better than A.R. to portray him.
13. In a complete change of pace, Alan Rickman's voice guest-starred in an American animated comedy. His character was the owner of a local Renaissance Faire. What is the name of this show?

Answer: King of the Hill

In the episode "Joust Like a Woman," Rickman played King Philip, who was considering doing business with Hank Hill's "propanery." Peggy Hill (a self-appointed expert on pretty much everything) assures him that his British accent is "really, really close"!
14. Here's an Alan Rickman quote that I adore: "I'm warming my lips." (It sounds great when he says it...it doesn't look like much in print!) Can you tell me which movie that quote comes from?

Answer: Truly, Madly, Deeply

Jamie was always cold (being dead, and all). And he was so considerate that right before they kissed (for the first time since his return), he attempted to warm his lips up so they wouldn't feel so cold to her. Isn't he a nice ghost? His continual chill caused some friction between Jamie and Nina.

He always had the heat cranked up as high as it would go and slept with multiple quilts, hot water bottles, etc. His fear was that he would catch a cold that would last for all of eternity!
15. "Blow Dry" is a very funny and sweet movie costarring Natasha Richardson and Josh Hartnett. Alan's character Phil Allen sported a very interesting tattoo on the bottom of his foot. What was the tattoo?

Answer: scissors

Phil Allen and his son are barbers in the Yorkshire town of Keighley. Allen is a former hairstylist champion who has retired from competition for personal reasons. But ten years after his retirement the next championship is to be held in Keighley, and he must face pressure from his son, difficult memories and old enemies.

This movie didn't get such great reviews, but I still enjoyed it. The cast is so good (Bill Nighy is terrific as Rickman's longtime nemesis Ray Robertson), and the over-the-top hairstylists and 'do's are a hoot!
