Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Charlize Theron born?

Answer: Benoni, South Africa

Charlize was born and raised on a smallholding in Benoni's outskirts and often refers to her "bare-feet, tomboy farm days" when interviewed. She took up ballet at the age of six and became a fashion model at age 14. Another South African born actress, Esta Terreblanche ("All my Children") was, of course, born in Rustenburg.
2. Charlize and her mother are very close and she often accompanies her to red carpet affairs. What is her mother's name?

Answer: Gerda

Gerda shot and killed Charlize's father in self-defense when she (Charlize) was 15. Charlize was named after her father, Charles, and her nickname is Charlie.
3. Charlize has appeared in "Playboy".

Answer: True

Charlize appeared in the May 1999 issue of "Playboy" and also auditioned for the lead in the 1995 disaster movie, "Showgirls". She also made "People Magazine's" 50 most beautiful people list in 2000. She was voted fourth on the 100 Sexiest Woman by FHM Taiwan in 2001 and scooped 12th position in Australia's Empire Magazine's Sexiest Female Movie Stars list.

The May 1999 issue of "Playboy" published nude photos of Theron, taken during the early years of her modeling career. Claiming they had been "for private use", Theron ended up suing photographer Guido Argentini.
4. Charlize is fluent in what other language than English?

Answer: Afrikaans

She and her mother still speak Afrikaans to each other.
5. What is Charlize's star sign?

Answer: Leo

She was born on 7 August 1975 and is an only child.
6. How much weight did she gain to portray serial killer Aileen Wournos in "Monster"?

Answer: 30 pounds

Charlize binged on potatoe chips and pizza to gain 30 pounds to portray Aileen. After watching documentaries on the Aileen Wournos trial, Charlize gave her Oscar-winning performance. She underwent a dramatic makeup change and wore false teeth and brown contact lenses to transform into Aileen.

Interestingly, she received her Oscar as Best Actress for this role on 29 February - Aileen Wournos' birthday. This was the first time a South African has won an Oscar.
7. Which ballet school did Charlize attend in New York?

Answer: Joffrey Ballet School

Charlize took up ballet at the age of 6 and dreamt about becoming a professional dancer. Sadly, a knee injury ended her dream when she was 18 and she moved to LA where agent John Crosby 'discovered' her when she threw a tantrum in a bank after the teller refused to cash her out-of-state cheque.
8. Most people regard playing Helga Svelgen in the 1996 film "2 Days in the Valley" as Charlize's first role in a feature film, but she featured as a young woman (uncredited) in which 1995 movie?

Answer: Children of the Corn III

I didn't know this and rented this (rather pathetic) movie just to see her for a few seconds.
9. For which mini-series did Charlize receive a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for TV in 2005?

Answer: The Life and Death of Peter Sellers

Directed by Stephen Hopkins, this mini-series is a brilliant, yet shocking adaptation of Roger Lewis' book about the actor best remembered as Inspector Clousseau in the "Pink Panther" movies and scooped the Golden Globe as best mini-series or motion picture made for TV (2005). Charlize portrayed his wife, Britt Ekland, but Angelica Houston beat our girl to the Golden Globe for her (brilliant) work in "Iron Jawed Angels".
10. Charlize portrayed the role of Gwen Sunday in the 2000 film "Men of Honour". What was the working title of this movie?

Answer: Navy Diver

Directed by George Tillman Jnr it tells the story of Carl Brashear (brilliantly portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jnr), the first African American and also the first amputee US Navy Diver and the man who trained him (played by Robert de Niro).
11. After noticing her talent in "2 Days in the Valley" Tom Hanks cast Charlize in "That Thing You Do!", the 1996 movie about a small-town rockband. What was the band called?

Answer: The Wonders

Charlize portrays Tina, the drummer's girlfriend who is less than thrilled about her boyfriend's career. As a teenager, Charlize had a huge crash on actor/director Tom Hanks and her favourite movie was "Splash".
12. What part does Charlize portray in "Celebrity", the 1998 movie directed by Woody Allen?

Answer: Supermodel

Not far off the mark, since she became a fashion model at 14 and won a leading South African magazine's "New Look of the Year" competition shortly thereafter.
13. Charlize has a tattoo on her right foot. What is it of?

Answer: A flower

She is indeed just a regular girl who loves to eat steak, gamble and smoke Marlboros.
14. Charlize co-starred with hunky Mark Wahlberg in "The Italian Job" in 2003, as well as in which other 2000 movie?

Answer: The Yards

Charlize has indeed had her fair share of kissing pretty boys throughout her movie career! In "Reindeer Games" she co-stars with Ben Affleck, in "The Cider House Rules" she gets to kiss "Spider-Man" (Tobey Maguire) and in "The Legend of Bagger Vance" she stars alongside Matt Damon and Will Smith. Lucky girl!
15. She has had the same character name in "The Cider House Rules" and "Waking up in Reno". What is this girl's name?

Answer: Candy

The other names are also some of the wonderful characters Charlize has portrayed: Rose Hearn in "15 Minutes" (2001), Laura Kensington in "Curse of the Jade Scorpion" (2001) and Jill Young in the 1998 Disney movie, "Mighty Joe Young". Needless to say, I loved her in all of these.
