Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these has Stephen Fry *not* been in?

Answer: Fawlty Towers

"Surrealisimo" (2002) was a very charming little short film produced by the BBC, starring lots of well known comedians including Stephen Fry, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt. It's about the life of Dali.
"Jeeves and Wooster" (1990-1993) was based on the eponymous P.G. Wodehouse books with Stephen Fry as the imperturbable butler, and Hugh Laurie as his scatterbrained master. He hosted as guest captain on "Nevermind the Buzzcocks" (2008) after the departure of Bill Bailey.

"Fawlty Towers" (1975) was a very successful TV series, which never had the pleasure of hosting Stephen Fry.
2. Which of these books was his autobiography, published in 1997?

Answer: Moab is my Washpot

"Moab is my Washpot" was a charming and humorous account of Stephen Fry's early life. "Making History" was his alternate timeline novel where Hitler's father was infertile, and the resulting Furhrer was far more efficent and deadly. "The Liar" was another fiction book written by Fry, and "My Life and Other Difficult Stories" doesn't exist.
3. Which of these was not a character played by Stephen Fry on "Blackadder"?

Answer: Sebastian Valmott

Stephen Fry was three separate Melchetts for the duration of "Blackadder" (which ran from 1983-2008), and a charming buffoon in all of them. However, there has never been a character called Sebastian Valmott on the show.
4. Which of the following qualifications was Fry's first degree?

Answer: English Literature at Cambridge

Stephen Fry gained a degree in English Literature from Cambridge, where he was very active as a student in the Footlights. Fry also met his best friend and comedy partner, Hugh Laurie, at Cambridge. He was a member of Queen's College.

There is a traditional rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge, and as a graduate from Cambridge himself, Fry managed to insert slyly tongue-in-cheek references to the supposed superiority of his own university - in "Blackadder" he claimed that Oxford was a complete dump.
5. Who was the famous playwright played by Stephen Fry in a film released in 1997?

Answer: Oscar Wilde

While the uncanny resemblance Stephen Fry bears to Oscar Wilde no doubt helped get him the part, the talent and wit he possesses made it all his own, in a perfect blend of two great wits.

He played Oscar Wilde in the 1997 film "Wilde". Oscar Wilde was a Victorian playwright famed for his wit, charm and ultimately for his homosexuality. His most famous works included "The Importance of being Earnest", "A Woman of no Importance" and his only novel "The Picture of Dorian Grey". Unfortunately Wilde had an affair with Lord Alfred Douglas (affectionately known as Bosie) and this led to his downfall and humiliation within the courts. He was sentenced to two years hard labour and died a broken man
6. Stephen Fry has a blot on his past, unfortunately, though he has made up for it in recent years. Which one of these is it?

Answer: He spent time in gaol for fraud.

Fry stole a credit card from a family friend, and was gaoled for fraud. He went to Pucklechurch Prison for three months (he was 17 years old at the time). He did not sell drugs, badly injure fellow actors, or have ambitions in the dictatorial line.
7. Who was Stephen Fry's most famous comedy partner?

Answer: Hugh Laurie

Though Stephen Fry has worked with or performed sketchs with all concerned, including "Blackadder" (1982-2008) with Atkinson, sketches with French and Idle etc, his main comedy partner was Hugh Laurie, whom he still thinks of as his best friend. The stubbly doctor from "House" was once the large-eyed, bashful bumbler Hugh Laurie and the pair of them worked together on a sketch show "A Bit of Fry and Laurie"(1989-1995) "Jeeves and Wooster"(1990-1993) and "Blackadder" (1983-2008).
8. Fry played a character in a series running from 1990-1993, based on books written by this writer. Who was it?

Answer: P.G. Wodehouse

P.G. Wodehouse wrote a series of books about Jeeves and Wooster - a butler who got his young master out of all sorts of scrapes. Naturally the personable Stephen Fry was the intelligent butler, and Hugh Laurie the nice, upperclass twit.
9. Which of these awards has he been given?

Answer: Pipesmoker of the Year

Though voted a Great Briton in 2005, 2nd most influential gay man in England in 2007 and undoubtedly has pretty eyes, the only one on this list that is true is Pipe Smoker of the Year, given in 2003. I believe he was the last recipient of the prize.
10. Stephen Fry has, like everyone else, had his share of illness and trouble. However of the following which is it certain has not happened to him or he does not have?

Answer: Childhood Leukemia

He revealed in an episode of "QI" (2003-present) that he is unfortunately allergic to champagne, and it is public knowledge, due to his broadcasting a special program on the BBC about bipolar disorder, that he is a victim of a variant. In January 2008 he slipped and broke his arm, when he attempted to break his fall.

He did not suffer from childhood leukemia.
