Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Groucho's real first name?

Answer: Julius

He was nicknamed Groucho because of the small purse he would wear on a string around his neck, called a "grouch" bag in those days. It was not because of his basic demeanor and comedy style.
2. Groucho, Harpo, and Chico all appeared in the main thirteen Marx Brothers' films, but they also appeared, albeit separately, in what film?

Answer: The Story of Mankind

"The Story of Mankind" (1957). This bizarre film showcased a trip through history and a weird assortment of cameos along the way, from famous faces like Ronald Coleman, Vincent Price, Dennis Hopper, and Peter Lorre. It was directed by Irwin Allen, of disaster movie fame, and was considered one of the worst movies ever made.
3. Groucho appeared in a TV version of which Gilbert and Sullivan opera in 1960?

Answer: The Mikado

Groucho played Ko Ko, the Lord High Executioner, in this "The Bell Telephone Hour" adaptation of the opera.
4. While touring Russia in December 1933, what actually appeared on the posters for Harpo Marx's show?

Answer: Exapno Mapcase

This was Harpo's name in Russian, and that's how Harpo read/pronounced his name. In the Cyrillic alphabet, the letters in Harpo's name resemble these words.
5. What was the last Marx Brothers film to feature Zeppo?

Answer: Duck Soup

Duck Soup (1933). The failure of this film, the Brothers' famous anti-war satire, and a growing boredom with playing the love interest or personal assistant, drove Zeppo to become an agent.
6. The stage version of "Animal Crackers" (1930) featured an ending different from the one in the movie. During this section, a dream sequence, what historical figure did Groucho's Captain Spaulding play?

Answer: Napoleon

The film ended with Harpo putting the entire crowd and himself to sleep. The play continued on from this point, most notably with the song "We're Four of the Three Musketeers"
7. What was Chico's real first name?

Answer: Leonard

Chico received his nickname because of his famous success and pursuit of the ladies, or chicks.
8. After their disastrous end at Paramount, what studio executive was credited with reviving the brothers' career?

Answer: Irving Thalberg

Thalberg spearheaded the productions of "A Night at the Opera" (1935) and "A Day at the Races (1937)", the brothers' most successful films, and was instrumental in honing their material through road tests of live sections of the script. Sadly he died after these two pictures, and the brothers were less successfully used from then on.
9. Complete this famous Groucho putdown: "Any resemblence between these two characters and living persons is purely ___________"

Answer: accidental

This line comes in the middle of "Go West" (1940). This movie followed the brothers' exploits as prospectors in the Old West. Here Groucho introduced Harpo and Chico to a lady.
10. Which of the brothers was the first to die?

Answer: Chico

Chico died in 1961, at the age of 74, from heart disease. He was followed by Harpo, three years later in 1964. Groucho and Gummo both lived until 1977, and Zeppo died two years later.
