Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Kathy" is a nickname for a longer name, with several variations. Which one belongs to Kathy Baker?

Answer: Katherine

Katherine Whitton Baker was born 8 June 1950. She attended the University of California Berkeley where she earned a degree in French.

Katherine is an especially popular name. Of King Henry VIII's six wives, three of them were named Katherine.
2. One of my favorite shows is "Medium" starring Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois. Kathy Baker played the role of a relative to Joe Dubois (Jake Weber), Allison's husband. Which one?

Answer: Mother

"Medium" (2005-present) was based on a real person, Allison DuBois. The show was set in Phoenix, Arizona and revolved around Allison's work at the District Attorney's office (solving crimes), her husband, Joe, and their three daughters.

Kathy Baker as Marjorie Dubois appeared in three episodes of the show including "In the Rough" (2005) and "Burn, Baby, Burn" Parts I and II (2008). Although Marjorie loves her son, Joe, she is rather cool toward her daughter-in-law, Allison, especially after Allison's special abilities are revealed to the world.

The real Allison Dubois was born in 1972 in Phoenix, Arizona. Her "abilities" have been tested at the University of Arizona by Gary Schwartz. Allison does not refer to herself as a psychic but prefers the terms medium or profiler. She did work at the District Attorney's office in Phoenix but as an intern while studying for her B.A. in Political Science at Arizona State University.
3. Kathy was raised in the Quaker religion.

Answer: True

The Quakers or Religious Society of Friends have strong beliefs which include pacifism and social equality. The Quakers were the majority founders of what is now known as Pennsylvania.
4. Kathy Baker was not only active on the small screen, she also had a couple of movie appearances. In what movie cult favorite of the 90s did she play the role of Joyce?

Answer: Edward Scissorhands

Directed by Tim Burton, "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), starring Johnny Depp, told a quirky tale of a young man who had been created by The Inventor (Vincent Price), but who was left unfinished when The Inventor died. He had scissors (and other sharp objects) for hands. He was taken in by a "normal" suburban family, with the mother played by Dianne Wiest and daughter played by Winona Ryder. Joyce was the neighbor who really enjoyed getting her hair cut by Edward.

"Jacob's Ladder" (1990) starred Tim Robbins. "Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"(1994) starred Terence Stamp and Guy Pearce. "The Big Lebowski" (1998) starred Jeff Bridges.
5. After finishing at the University of California Berkeley, Kathy took an interesting career path. Which cooking school did she attend?

Answer: Cordon Bleu

Kathy Baker learned how to cook haute cuisine and earned Le Grande Diploma from this very famous school in Paris, France. Julia Child also attended the Cordon Bleu, but several years before Kathy did.

Speaking of great chefs, do you know why there are 100 pleats on his/her tall white hat? The 100 pleats represent the 100 ways that he/she has learned how to cook an egg.

The other answer choices are all renowned cooking schools in America. I have had a meal (absolutely out of this world) at the Arizona branch of the Culinary Institute of America. Its nickname is "CIA".
6. Let's go back to television. Simon Baker is now very famous for his role in "The Mentalist" (2008 to present). He also starred in another show, "The Guardian" (2001-2004). What legal work did Janine McGregor (Kathy Baker) want attorney Nick Fallin (Simon Baker's character)to perform for her?

Answer: to have her missing daugher declared legally dead

"Mothers of the Disappeared" originally aired on March 22, 2002. Janine's daughter, Grace, had disappeared 10 years ago. Grace had some life insurance, but the company would not release the money to Ms. McGregor unless she could prove that Grace was dead or have her declared legally dead. Nothing easy ever came Nick's way and this episode is no exception. With the ink barely dry on the papers to have her daughter declared legally dead, BEHOLD, Grace showed up ready to take up her life again with her mom. Although Nick had his reservations and shared these with Janine, Janine could not bring herself to deny that this pretender was her long lost daughter. However, by the time the show was over, the imposter herself confessed that she was not the real Grace.

Anyone who watched the show knows that Nick worked at his father's firm, mainly dealing with corporate law. He also, because of a run-in with the law, "volunteered" his time at Legal Services of Pittsburgh where the majority of his cases (at least in the beginning of the show) dealt with family and child custody situations. Nick was not equipped to deal with a murder case. He could, however, very easily have been involved with a case of placing a child into a mental institution or arranging legal guardianship for a homeless child.
7. In which western state of the United States was Kathy Baker born?

Answer: Texas

Kathy was born in Midland, Texas. Growing up, however, she spent her time in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
8. Who could ever forget Kathy Baker's chilling performance as the "Hook Lady" during the 2001-2002 season of "Boston Public"? What was her character's name?

Answer: Meredith Peters

"Boston Public" (200-2004) was created by David E. Kelly, who also created "Picket Fences". It focused on a fictional group of students and teachers at Winslow High School in Boston and the ups and downs of their lives.

As Meredith Peters, Kathy Baker played the a love interest for Scott Guber (Anthony Heard), the long-suffering Vice Principal on the show. Meredith had punished her son by locking him in the basement of their home. Her son retaliated by locking her in the basement after he go out. To escape, Ms. Peters used a chainsaw to cut off her own hand.

The rest of the answer choices are characters from "Boston Public" including Marla Hendricks (Loretta Devine), Ronnie Cook (Jeri Ryan) and Lauren Davis (Jessalyn Gilsig).
9. Kathy has even guest starred on one of my favorite television shows, "Monk"! In which episode did Kathy play a character called Sylvia Fairbourn?

Answer: Mr. Monk Goes to Jail

"Monk" (2002-present, but this is its last season!) was a delightful look at a former police detective who also has OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder).

In "Mr. Monk Goes to Jail" (air date was 5 March 2004), J.T. DeMornay had written a tell-all book about millionaire Lambert Lawson who was suing DeMornay for libel. Lambert was also in need of a kidney transplant, however, he had an extreme rare blood type that only inmate Ray Kaspo matched. Ray's kidneys, once he had been executed, were to go to Lawson to save his life. 45 minutes before his execution, Ray Kapso was poisoned in such a way that none of his vital organs survived. Without Ray, Lambert Lawson died; therefore, there was no longer a lawsuit against J.T. DeMornay.

Kathy Baker as Sylvia Fairbourn was the prison's librarian and mother of J.T. Demonay. She orchestrated the murder of Kaspo through her contacts with the prison in-mates, so that the lawsuit against her son for libel would be dismissed, since the plaintiff was dead.

What some mothers do to save their children! If you didn't follow my plot summary, be sure to watch the entire episode when it is repeated!
10. Our Ms. Baker recently played an interesting role on "Saving Grace" (2007 to present). In two episodes, "But There's Clay" and "So What's the Purpose of a Platypus", Kathy (aka Maggie) is involved with one of Grace's "brothers". Which one?

Answer: Doug

"Saving Grace" (2007 to present) is a show about Grace Hanadarko, a police detective for the Oklahoma City police department. She was assigned a guardian angel, Earl, to help her straighten out her extremely complicated life.

Now before I start getting correction notices, "Doug" was Doug Norman (Chris Mulkey) who was married to Grace's sister, Mary Francis which made him her "brother" in-law. Doug was a widower as Mary Francis died at the federal building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on April 19, 1995. Doug and Mary Francis had one son, Clay, who was Grace's favorite nephew.

Maggie played a new bartender at the characters' favorite water hole, who became very close with Doug, planning a quick, impromptu wedding. As Grace was very concerned about her nephew, she investigated Maggie completely. Evidence was found that Maggie was involved with a con man and the two of them preyed on survivors of victims of the Oklahoma bombing. After obtaining a confession from Maggie, Grace (and Doug and Clay) were soon rid or her.

Joe Hanadarko (Sam Hennings) has appeared infrequently on the show. Leo Hanadarko (Patrick St. Eprit) was the brother who is a firefighter. Johnny Hanadarko (Tom Irwin) was better known as Father Johnny Hanadarko.
