Kiefer and his twin sister Rachel were born to Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas on December 21, 1966 in London, England. By virtue of being born in England had having Canadian parents, Kiefer has dual Canadian and British citizenship. In 1997, Shirley and Kiefer both appeared together on stage in a production of "The Glass Menagerie." Her father and Kiefer's grandfather, Tommy Douglas, was Premier of Saskatchewan and was instrumental in bringing national health care to Canada.

Kiefer and Robert were roommates for three years as Kiefer worked on his acting career. Kiefer and Julia met in 1990 after Kiefer's first marriage ended in divorce. A whirlwind romance followed and they planned a wedding for June 1991. Julia called off the wedding three days before the ceremony and ironically she would later go on to star in the movie "Runaway Bride" (1999) about a woman who repeatedly leaves men at the altar. Kiefer would find love again and married his second wife in 1996. Unfortunately that marriage also ended in divorce eight years later.

Conan O'Brien hosted the Emmys in 2006 and used the opening of the show to insert himself into various television shows on a quest to reach the Emmys. Besides "24" (2001), O'Brien also parodied such shows as "Lost" (2004), "The Office" (2005), "South Park" (1997), "House" (2004) and "Dateline NBC" (1992).

In addition to the Emmy opening, Kiefer and Mary Lynn have also parodied their characters, Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian, on the television show "The Simpsons" (1989). The episode entitled "24 minutes" (2007), was shot in the real-time format of "24". Jack Bauer was able to save the day, and received a crank call from Bart as well. Kiefer also appeared as another character on the show that same season, making him one of the rare celebrity actors to appear as two different characters on the show.
