In 1997, Shirley and Kiefer both appeared together on stage in a production of "The Glass Menagerie." Her father and Kiefer's grandfather, Tommy Douglas, was Premier of Saskatchewan and was instrumental in bringing national health care to Canada.
2. Even when Kiefer moved out from his family, he couldn't escape famous people. What multiple Academy Award nominee did Kiefer live with for three years when he first moved out to Hollywood?

Answer: Robert Downey Jr.

Kiefer and Robert were roommates for three years as Kiefer worked on his acting career. In 1988 the two even starred together in the movie "1969" which centered around tension created by conflicting ideologies about the Vietnam War in a small American town. Robert received Academy Award nominations for his performances in "Chaplin" (1992) and "Tropic Thunder" (2008). Kiefer made this revelation when he appeared on the talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in 2009.
3. Kiefer's first role was a bit part in "Max Dugan Returns" in 1983 and he followed that up with roles in Canadian film and television. What movie based on a short story by Stephen King featured Kiefer in his first significant role in American cinema?

Answer: Stand by Me

This 1986 movie centers around four young buys on a journey to find the dead body of a missing boy. Kiefer plays a local bully who gets his gang of friends together to harass the four boys and try and get credit for finding the dead boy's body. Directed by Rob Reiner, the all-star cast of this movie includes Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell, Corey Feldman, John Cusack, and Richard Dreyfus.

The movie is based on Stephen King's short story "The Body."
4. Kiefer has been married several times. However, his most famous romantic relationship may be a wedding that never happened. What actress was a real "runaway bride" when she broke off their engagement just days before a planned wedding back in 1991?

Answer: Julia Roberts

Kiefer and Julia met in 1990 after Kiefer's first marriage ended in divorce. A whirlwind romance followed and they planned a wedding for June 1991. Julia called off the wedding three days before the ceremony and ironically she would later go on to star in the movie "Runaway Bride" (1999) about a woman who repeatedly leaves men at the altar. Kiefer would find love again and married his second wife in 1996. Unfortunately that marriage also ended in divorce eight years later.
5. While Kiefer has been in a variety of films, he is probably best known for his work as Jack Bauer on the groundbreaking television series "24." Which of the following awards did Kiefer NOT win for his performance on the show?

Answer: People's Choice Award

Despite being one of the most popular and highest paid actors on television, Kiefer never won a People's Choice Award for "24", though he did garner two nominations. He won one Golden Globe Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for his portrayal of Jack Bauer.

He also received two Emmys for his work on "24", one for the role of Jack Bauer and one as a co-executive producer when "24" won the Best Drama Emmy. Overall he received six Screen Actor Guild nominations, six Golden Globe nominations, and eleven Emmy nominations (seven for acting). "24" ran eight seasons, from 2001 to 2010 (a writer's strike forced cancellation of one season).
6. In addition to acting, Kiefer has interests in other forms of entertainment. In particular he is the co-owner of a company called Ironworks. What kind of company is Ironworks?

Answer: Independent record label

Kiefer has a keen interest in music in addition to acting, and is an avid guitar collector. Along with friend and musician Jude Cole, Kiefer started Ironworks in Los Angeles. The company derives its name because its studio is situated in an old ironworks foundry. According to Kiefer, the company aims to help talented young artists make and then distribute their own records and break into the music industry.
7. Why did Kiefer briefly retire from acting in the late 1990s?

Answer: To pursue a rodeo career

Starring in several films such as "Young Guns" (1988) and "The Cowboy Way" (1994), Kiefer learned how to handle a rope and took an active interest in the rodeo. He purchased a ranch in Montana and learned the finer points of being in the rodeo. While not reaching the same level of success as an actor, he did win a couple roping competitions.

Although he returned to acting, he was able to showcase his rodeo skills as a guest on "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn" (1999) when he successfully roped in a show staffer with his lasso in a 2003 episode.
8. Despite a very hectic shooting schedule for "24", Kiefer was able to shoot several movies during the run of the hit television series. What movie did Kiefer co-star with Colin Farrell, where Kiefer received second billing despite appearing on screen for just over three minutes?

Answer: Phone Booth

Because of his distinctive voice, Kiefer does not need to appear on screen to make a lasting impression on studio audiences. In "Phone Booth" (2002), Kiefer plays a sniper who holds Colin Farrell's character hostage in the titular phone booth. Most of the movie centers on Colin's character talking on the phone with Kiefer's character without seeing Kiefer's face. Like "24" (2001), the movie was shot in a real-time format, where the events are seen as they unfold over a specific period of time. The movie also co-starred Forest Whitaker, Katie Holmes, and Radha Mitchell.
9. Although "24" was known as a dramatic series with very little humor, occasionally the show has been able to poke fun of itself. In 2006, Kiefer and fellow "24" castmate Mary Lynn Rajskub appeared in an awards show sketch that parodied many popular television shows, including "The Office" (2005) and "Lost" (2004). What Awards show did Kiefer assist by providing some unexpected comic relief?

Answer: Emmy Awards

Conan O'Brien hosted the Emmys in 2006 and used the opening of the show to insert himself into various television shows on a quest to reach the Emmys. Besides "24" (2001), O'Brien also parodied such shows as "Lost" (2004), "The Office" (2005), "South Park" (1997), "House" (2004) and "Dateline NBC" (1992).

In addition to the Emmy opening, Kiefer and Mary Lynn have also parodied their characters, Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian, on the television show "The Simpsons" (1989). The episode entitled "24 minutes" (2007), was shot in the real-time format of "24". Jack Bauer was able to save the day, and received a crank call from Bart as well. Kiefer also appeared as another character on the show that same season, making him one of the rare celebrity actors to appear as two different characters on the show.
10. In 2010, Kiefer made a rather unusual appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman." Why did his appearance raise some eyebrows?

Answer: He was wearing a dress

Because of his role as Jack Bauer, his distinctive voice, his rodeo work, and his party animal personality, Kiefer is often considered a rather macho man. Therefore, it was quite shocking to everyone, including host David Letterman, when Kiefer appeared on the show wearing a dress. During the interview it was revealed that Kiefer had lost a bet on a playoff game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens.

After the Ravens pulled off an upset victory, Kiefer was forced to follow through on the bet and appeared in a dress on the program.
