Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Matthew Morrison, Will Schuester on "Glee", had a spotty history on television before "Glee", but his biggest exposure came when he nabbed the role of Link Larkin in the 2002 Broadway production of what musical?

Answer: Hairspray

"Hairspray" had a long history, starting as a 1988 John Waters movie, becoming a musical in 2002 (the one that Matthew was in) based on the original movie, then again becoming a different movie in 2007 based on the musical. The musical dealt with the racial integration of an "American Bandstand"-like show in the 1960s. Matthew Morrison has demonstrated his singing and dancing ability on "Glee" numerous times, so it is no surprise, given his youthful looks that he fit right in to the teen idol role of Link Larkin.
2. Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry on "Glee", spent her acting career leading up to "Glee" on the stage as well. She most notably starred as the lead character Wendla Bergman in a Broadway musical that swept the Tony Awards in 2007. What Duncan Sheik-penned musical was this?

Answer: Spring Awakening

"Spring Awakening" was a musical based on the 1891 German play by Frank Wedekind. It dealt with major mature adult themes, as it did in the original play, so much so that the play was banned in 19th century Germany.
All four plays or musicals mentioned were Tony nominees from 2007, but "Spring Awakening" was Lea's breakthrough musical. Born Lea Michele Sarfati in New York, she debuted on Broadway in 1995 in "Les Miserables". Now with television to display her talents, the world will surely see more of Lea in the future.
3. Jane Lynch, the snarky cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester on "Glee", has had one of the more storied career of the "Glee" cast, with appearances in such movies as :"The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "Julie and Julia". Her breakthrough movie role was as dog handler Christy Cummings in what 2000 comedy?

Answer: Best in Show

Jane Lynch was one of many scene stealers in that movie, a mockumentary from the mind of Christopher Guest. The basic plot dealt with the unintended humor of dog shows and the atypical personalities involved with it in real life.
Lynch has also appeared in recurring roles in the television shows "Two and a Half Men", "Criminal Minds" and "The L Word". Jane has stated publicly that she loved this role, and she owed it all to the writers, who gave her the most gloriously caustic things to say on the show.
4. Cory Monteith, "Glee's" Finn Hudson, has done some TV work leading up to "Glee". In 2006, he had a seven episode stint as Charlie Tanner in the ABC/ABC Family drama about a boy suffering from amnesia and lack of a belly button. What program was this?

Answer: Kyle XY

"Kyle XY", throughout its time on the air, dealt with Kyle, who had no memory of growing up, ending up where he was. "Kyle XY" got a poor treatment from ABC, as it featured many unanswered questions in its plot, that were never resolved before its cancellation. Only later were there plot resolutions posted on the internet by writers, but that was anticlimactic.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Cory said he has never sung before in his performance career, but he did have some music background as a drummer.
5. Dianna Agron, who played cheerleading captain, Quinn Fabray, on "Glee", had a short stint on a another network program in 2006, ironically playing a cheerleading captain in that show, too. Her time on the show abruptly ended when her character's head was telekinetically split open. Can you name this show?

Answer: Heroes

The NBC sci-fi drama "Heroes" was based on ordinary people suddenly gaining supernatural powers, and how they united to change history. The villain, Sylar, was looking for Claire Bennett, the character behind the now legendary pop culture phrase, "Save the cheerleader, save the world". Unfortunately Sylar, looking for a cheerleader, went straight for the one who got snotty with him. That didn't end well for Dianna's character. The two cheerleader characters were almost interchangeable in their character's attitudes toward the "lesser people". Dianna also had a recurring role on "Veronica Mars".
6. Jessalyn Gilsig, who played Schuester's wife Terri on "Glee", had extensive television experience leading up to "Glee". In fact, in three of the four shows below she had feature roles that lasted at least ten episodes. Can you name the show she hasn't appeared on?

Answer: Chicago Hope

Jessalyn's first starring role occurred in David Kelley's high school teacher drama "Boston Public" as one of the teachers. She followed that up in 2003 with the role of troubled on-again-off-again girlfriend of Christian Troy on the plastic surgery drama "Nip/Tuck".

In 2007, she moved to "Heroes" as the fire-manipulating, biological mother of the previously mentioned Claire Bennett in "Heroes". She made occasional appearances on the program "Friday Night Lights" as Tami Taylor's sister Shelley.
7. Heather Morris, who played the plastic cheerleader Brittany on "Glee", has done mostly dance work on television in her performance career. She was labeled as "Suit Dancer", in a song-and-dance number in the 100th episode of what CBS comedy?

Answer: How I Met Your Mother

If you know your TV, the one character associated with suits in any of these shows was Barney Stinson from "How I Met your Mother", a "Friends"-like show dealing with one of the main characters relating the history of how he "met" his kids' mother. The song and dance number in question was to a song entitled "Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit".

The character of Brittany was the only one to not have a revealed last name on the show. Heather's main forte is dancing, and in addition to the dancing on "Glee", she also was a dancer on one of Beyonce's tours.
8. Kevin Michael McHale, who played wheelchair-bound Artie Abrams on "Glee", hasn't had a long acting career, but he did have a memorable part as a pizza delivery person who was kidnapped by Michael Scott, on what show?

Answer: The Office

The episode, "Launch Party", represented the party the firm was throwing for the launch of their new website, "Dunder Mifflin Infinity". Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell, kidnapped a pizza delivery, in a tantrum he threw for not receiving the respect he deserved.
Kevin was a member of a boy band called NLT, and he made an appearance as a member of the band in the movie "Bratz: the Movie". Kevin shares his name with a Hall of Fame basketball player, Kevin McHale of the Boston Celtics.
9. Jayma Mays, who played neat freak Emma Pillsbury on "Glee", had numerous acting opportunities leading up to her role on "Glee". Her most significant TV part came as a girl jealous of the title character's interest in her fellow employee. What show was this?

Answer: Ugly Betty

Betty and Charlie (Jayma's part) went back and forth over the affections of Henry in the first season of "Ugly Betty", a comedy based on the dealings of creating a fashion magazine and Betty's naive nature while working with the vultures in the fashion world. Her stint only lasted eight episodes.
Jayma has also appeared as Hiro's love interest in "Heroes" (what's with all the Heroes alums on "Glee"?), and Lucy in "Epic Movie".
10. Native Canadian Patrick Gallagher, who played football coach Ken Tanaka on "Glee", hasn't had many significant roles on American television (he appeared on several Canadian dramas), but he did have a part playing a real historical figure in the Ben Stiller movie "Night at the Museum". Which person did he play?

Answer: Attila the Hun

"Night at the Museum" was based on a 1993 children's book, in which a newly hired night watchman found that displays in the museum came to life during closing hours. You may remember a scene with Patrick Gallagher, where Attila and others chased Ben Stiller's character through Central Park. Patrick Gallagher appeared in the Canadian dramas "The Line" and "DaVinci's Inquest" before joining the cast of "Glee".

He also appeared in the Oscar winning movie "Sideways" as a bartender.
