Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these actors/actresses were born in 1925, but which of the four is older than the others?

Answer: Judy Garland

Frances Ethel Gumm was born in Grand Rapids MI on June 10, 1922, which means that Judy Garland is older than the other three by more than two and a half years. In 1939, the year in which she played Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz', she was awarded the Juvenile Award at the Oscars.

The only previous winners were Shirley Temple in 1934 and a joint award to Deanna Dublin and Mickey Rooney in 1938. Garland was the first of these four to die, in London in 1969 aged just 47. The youngest of these four in Angela Lansbury, born in London in October 1925. John Uhler Lemmon III was born in Newton MA on February 8, and Paul Newman two weeks earlier in Cleveland OH. Of these three, Jack Lemmon died in June 2001 and Paul Newman in September 2008.
2. Here are four Hollywood legends for you this time. Three reached the 70 mark in 2000, but one did so later. Who is the youngster amongst them?

Answer: Sophia Loren

Sofia Villani Scicolone was born in Rome, Italy in September 1934, which makes Sophia Loren more than four years younger than the other three. She made her film debut in 1950. Ten years later she became the first actress to win an acting Oscar for a non-English speaking role when she collected the Best Actress award for her performance as Cesira in 'Two Women'.

In 1990, she received an Honorary Award along with Myrna Loy. Terence Steven McQueen is the oldest of this foursome, born in Beech Grove IN in March 1930. Clinton Eastwood Jr was born in San Francisco in May and Thomas Sean Connery, now Sir Sean, in Edinburgh, Scotland in August.

Other than McQueen, who died in Mexico in 1980 aged 50, the other three remain active well into their 70s.
3. We have an eclectic mix of acting, singing, comedy, writing and directing from this talented foursome. Three began life in 1935, but which one is at least three years younger than the rest?

Answer: Ian McKellen

The sprightly lad amongst these four is Sir Ian Murray McKellen CBE, born in Burnley, Lancashire in May 1939, which makes him more than three years younger than the others. Although he may always now be remembered as Gandalf from the 'Lord of the Rings' (2001 - 2003) film trilogy, his acting career began way back in 1969.

He was made a CBE in 1979 and knighted in 1991. That same year, he also won the prestigious Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his performance in 'Richard III'. The oldest of this quartet is Elvis, born in Tupelo MS on January 8, 1935. Dudley Moore was born in London in April and Allan Stuart Konigsberg, now better known as Woody Allen, in Brooklyn in December. Presley died in 1977 aged just 42 and Moore in 2002 aged 66.
4. Here are four great actors, three of whom were born in 1940. Can you spot the one who is older than the others?

Answer: Dustin Hoffman

Remarkably, or at least is seems so to me, Dustin Hoffman has celebrated his 70th birthday. Born in Los Angeles CA in August 1937, the two-time Oscar winner is the oldest of this group by more than three years. He made his film debut in 1967 and two years later earned his first Oscar nomination for 'Midnight Cowboy'.
The youngest of this foursome is Bruce Lee, born in San Francisco CA in November 1940. Patrick Hewes Stewart, or Captain Jean-Luc Picard if you prefer, was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire in July and Peter Fonda, who co-starred in 'Easy Rider' with Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, which seems like oh so long ago (it was 1969), was born in New York City in February 1940.
Bruce Lee died in 1973 aged just 32 but the other three continue working at well past retirement age.
5. Three of these actors/actresses were born at the tail end of of WWII, but which one falls into the baby-boomer category?

Answer: Richard Gere

Richard Tiffany Gere was born in Philadelphia PA in August 1949, which makes him the best part of four years younger than the other three. He made his screen debut as the villain, Tony Lo Porto, opposite Diane Keaton in the 1977 film 'Looking for Mr Goodbar'.

In 1980 he rose to stardom with his performance as the male prostitute, Julian Kaye, in 'American Gigolo'. Ultimately, he will probably be best remembered for 'Pretty Woman' with Julia Roberts in 1990. The oldest of this quartet is Maria de Lourdes Villiers-Farrow, born in Los Angeles CA in February 1945.

She won the Golden Globe award for Best Newcomer in 1965 and has made more than 40 films, but Mia Farrow will also be remembered for her husbands, Frank Sinatra and Andre Previn. Steve Martin was born in Waco TX in July and Goldie Hawn in November 1945.

It sure is hard to believe that Goldie Hawn is old enough to draw a pension.
6. We are getting a bit more modern now, with three stars born in 1950 and one at least three years older. Who is the eldest of the four?

Answer: Susan Sarandon

Susan Abigail Tomalin was born in New York City in October 1946, which means that Susan Sarandon is more than three years older than the others on this list. She made her film debut in 1970 and earned her first Oscar nomination ten years later (for 'Atlantic City').

In 1995, she won the Best Actress Oscar for 'Dead Man Walking' (which was her fourth nomination). Sarandon was the surname of her first husband, but she has been in a relationship with fellow Oscar winner Tim Robbins since 1988. The youngest of this quartet is the lovable Canadian buffoon John Candy, born in Toronto in October 1950. Candy died of a heart attack in 1994 aged just 43. Actor/comedian William Jennings Murray was born in Wilmette IL in September and Jay Leno in New Rochelle NY in April 1950.
7. Who is the comparative youngest amongst this quartet?

Answer: Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone was born in Meadville PA in March 1958, making her more than three years younger than the other three. She made her film debut in 1980 and came to international attention with her performance as Catherine Tramell opposite Michael Douglas in 'Basic Instinct' in 1992.

In 1995 she won a Golden Globe and earned an Oscar nomination for 'Casino' Of the alternatives, the oldest is Kirstie Alley, best remembered as Rebecca Howe in 'Cheers', who was born in Wichita KS in 1951. The other two were born within a few days of each other in 1955. Mr Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson, was born in County Durham in northern England and Oscar-winning actor/director Kevin Costner took his first curtain call in Lynwood CA.
8. We have four actors, three of whom were born in 1960. Which of the four is the elder statesman of this group?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks was born in Concord CA in July 1956, which makes him more than four years older than the other three contenders. Hanks made his film debut in 1984 opposite Darryl Hannah in 'Splash' and earned the first of his five Best Actor Oscar nominations for 'Big' just four years later.

He has won twice, in 1993 for 'Philadelphia' and 1994 for 'Forrest Gump'. The youngest of this foursome is Hugh John Mungo Grant, born in London in September 1960. The other two were born within three days of each other in August; José Antonio Domínguez Banderas, aka Zorro, in Malaga, Spain, and David Duchovny, best known as Special Agent Fox Mulder from 'The X-Files' (1993) in New York City.
9. These are all children of the '60s, but which one was born last?

Answer: Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston was born in Sherman Oaks CA in February 1969, which makes her the best part of four years younger than the alternatives. She made her film debut in 1990 but found fame on the small screen playing Rachel Green in 'Friends' for ten years from 1994-2004.

Her five-year marriage to Brad Pitt ended in divorce in 2005. The next youngest is Sarah Jessica Parker, star of TV's 'Sex and the City', who was born in Nelsonville OH in March 1965. The other two are both native New Yorkers. Actress and model Brooke Shields comes from a line of Italian nobility and can even count King Henri IV of France amongst her ancestors.

However, she will probably be best remembered for her numerous high-profile relationships (JFK jr, Michael Bolton, George Michael, Michael Jackson, etc.) and her two-year marriage to tennis legend Andre Agassi.

She was born in May 1965 and actor/comedian Ben Stiller in November 1965.
10. Who is the youngest member of this quartet? Three were born in 1970, the odd one out later than that.

Answer: Leonardo di Caprio

He made his TV debut in 'Santa Barbara' in 1991, has three Oscar nominations and a place in film history as the star of one of the all-time blockbusters ('Titanic' in 1997), and seems to have been around forever, but Leonardo di Caprio is barely out of diapers.

He was born in Los Angeles in November 1974, which makes his four years younger than the alternatives. Born in Boston MA in April 1970, the oldest of this quartet is Uma Thurman, star of almost every film by Quentin Tarantino. Oscar-nominated actor River Phoenix was born in Metolius OR in August.

He died of a drug overdose in Hollywood in 1993, aged just 23. Matt Damon, born in Cambridge MA in October 1970, made his screen debut in 'Mystic Pizza' in 1988, won a screenwriting Oscar in 1997 for 'Good Will Hunting', earning an acting nomination for the same film, and has since starred in one blockbuster after another (the "Ocean's" films, the "Bourne" trilogy, etc).
