Bale was born in 1974 in Haverfordwest in west Wales. His first performances were in television advertisements, before progressing to 'made for television' films. He was then cast in a major role in 'Empire of the Sun' (1987), which was an adaptation of the novel by J.G. Ballard, set in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Skandar was born in 1991 and appeared in first film in the series, 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', in 2005. He has repeated the role in the subsequent films, 'Prince Caspian' (2008) and 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' (2010). He portrayed Edmund Pevensie, the third youngest child of four in the family and the one who changed the most during the course of the stories. Edmund began as a 'non-believer' in Narnia and even changed sides to join the witch in the first film (and book) before seeing the error of his ways. Peter Pevensie was played by William Moseley and Ben Barnes took the role of Prince Caspian in the second and third films. Eustace Scrubb, cousin to the Pevensies, made his first appearance in 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' with the role taken by Will Poulter.

Roddy McDowall was born in London in 1928 and appeared with fellow Brit Elizabeth Taylor in 'Lassie Come Home' (1943). His long and successful career, which lasted from 1938 - 1999, included 'Planet of the Apes' (1968) and several of its sequels, 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972) and 'Overboard' (1987).

He died in 1998 in Los Angeles. Although the other options also starting acting while children, O'Connor and Stockwell are American born. Bartholomew was also born in London and appeared in 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' (1936) but turned to producing for television, rather than performing, in his adult life.

Nicholas has worked regularly both in television and films. In the UK he is well known for his role in the television drama 'Skins', based on teenagers in their last two years at school. Nicholas also appeared in 'Clash of the Titans' (2010) and appears to have established a firm base for continuing his acting career.

The other films all starred Colin Firth - 'Dorian Gray' was also released in 2009, 'St. Trinian's' was from 2007 and 'The Accidental Husband' from 2008.

Tom was born in 1987 and had already appeared in 'The Borrowers' (1997) and 'Anna and the King' (1999) before being cast as the villainous Draco Malfoy. Malfoy, supported by his henchmen Crabbe and Goyle, is the main child antagonist to Harry Potter, being the same age as the hero. Tom has appeared in all eight of the 'Harry Potter' films and made a cameo appearance, as himself, in 'Get Him to the Greek' (2010). Tom seems to be on track to continue his acting career into his adult life. Dudley Dursley was portrayed by Harry Melling and James Phelps played Fred Weasley. Neville Longbottom was played by Matthew Lewis.

Petula Clark was sometimes referred to as 'Britain's Shirley Temple' and began her career in 1942 singing on the radio. She toured the UK and often performed with another child star, Julie Andrews, becoming a 'good luck charm' for British troops fighting in World War II. Petula appeared in several British made films in the 1940s and 1950s, and also appeared with Anthony Newley in 'Vice Versa' (1948).

She then turned her talents to singing and had several top ten hits in the UK. Petula broke into the US market with 'Downtown' which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.

Mark Lester was born in 1958 and had already made small appearances in films, including 'Fahrenheit 451' (1966) when he was cast as Oliver Twist in the musical 'Oliver!' with Jack Wild playing the Artful Dodger. 'Oliver!' was an adaptation of the Dickens novel about orphaned boys being trained as pickpockets by the villainous Fagin.

The music and lyrics were written by Lionel Bart. Although he made other films during his childhood he gave up acting at the age of nineteen and became an osteopath. Lester was a close friend of Michael Jackson and was godfather to the singer's children.

Jamie Bell was picked from more than 2,000 applicants for the role of the working class boy who takes up ballet in 'Billy Elliot'. The book was written by Mary Hayley Bell, Hayley's mother. John Mills, later Sir John, was Hayley's father and Juliet was her sister - both were well known in the acting profession. Annette Mills was her aunt and appeared on television in 'Muffin the Mule' from 1946 until 1955.

The film was directed by Bryan Forbes and featured Alan Bates in his first film role. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman created a musical version which premiered in 1996, although this has been less successful than many of Lloyd Webber's shows. Hayley had already appeared in 'Tiger Bay' (1959), 'Pollyanna' (1960) and 'The Parent Trap' (1961) and was a particular favourite of the Disney studios.
