Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was born in Bournemouth, which is now in Dorset. Which of these authors also came from Dorset?

Answer: Thomas Hardy

Hardy was born in 1840, near Dorchester. His novels are placed in the fictional area of Wessex and use many Dorset locations, which he renamed. Dickens was born in Portsmouth, Devon and D H Lawrence came from Nottinghamshire. Defoe was born in Stoke Newington, which is now part of North London.
2. My first job was in Gloucester. Which infamous mass murderer is associated with this city?

Answer: Fred West

Fred West was born in Much Marcle, Herefordshire. His house at 25 Cromwell Street hid the bodies of many of his victims. He hanged himself in prison in 1995 and his wife, Rose, was sentenced to life imprisonment for her part in the murders. Ian Brady's crimes were committed in Lancashire, Harold Shipman's in Hyde (Manchester) and Peter Sutcliffe was the 'Yorkshire Ripper'.
3. My next move was to Birmingham, where I lived in Acocks Green. Which comedian was born there?

Answer: Jasper Carrott

Jasper was born Robert Norman Davis in 1945. He is the father of actress Lucy Davis, who played the part of 'Dawn' in the television series 'The Office'. Of the other options, Russ Abbot came from Chester, Harry Enfield from Horsham in West Sussex and David Walliams from Surrey.
4. I lived briefly in Swindon, Wiltshire, which is the birthplace of which National Hunt jockey?

Answer: John Francome

John Francome rode for trainer Fred Winter. Since retiring, he has taken to writing horse racing based fiction, following in the footsteps of Dick Francis. The other choices are all retired jockeys but none of them is English born. O'Neill and Eddery both come from Eire and Dunwoody was born in Belfast.
5. Leaving Swindon, I found myself in Devon. Which of these seafarers was born in the same county?

Answer: Sir Francis Drake

Drake was born in Tavistock, near Plymouth. He is probably best known for leading the fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada. He is alleged to have been playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe when told of the approach of the Armada and insisting on finishing his game. Nelson came from Norfolk, Beatty from Cheshire and Jellicoe from Hampshire.
6. My next home was Bristol. Which famous engineer is most associated with this city?

Answer: Isambard Kingdom Brunel

Brunel was responsible for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, still in use today, and for the railway station at Temple Meads. The ship he designed, the SS Great Britain, is on display at Bristol Docks. Telford designed the Menai Bridge in Anglesey and George Stephenson was a railway engineer. Fox was also associated with bridge building and his firm was responsible for building the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition in 1851.
7. I then went back to Birmingham, this time to live in Solihull. Ritchie Neville was born in Solihull and was a member of which of the following boy bands?

Answer: Five

Five, originally called 5ive, were formed in 1997 and broke up in 2001. Busted were around from 2002 to 2005 and Blue from 2001 until 2005. Westlife are an Irish band that began their career in 1998. Boy bands form, break up and sometimes reform, so the dates given are from their first incarnation.
8. For a time, I lived in Church Crookham, Hampshire, which was then the home of the Gurkha Regiment. Which actress led a high profile campaign to force the British Government to permit ex-Gurkhas to be allowed to live in the UK?

Answer: Joanna Lumley

The Gurkhas were stationed in Church Crookham for 29 years, leaving in 2000 when the barracks were closed. Joanna Lumley hijacked a government minister, Phil Woolas, on live television. Her campaign was eventually successful in that the government relaxed the restrictions on residency for former Gurkha servicemen. The other actresses have no connections to the Gurkhas.
9. I worked in Hereford until 2007. Which English composer lived in Hereford between 1904 and 1911, having been born in Worcester?

Answer: Edward Elgar

Elgar's home in Hereford was called 'Plas Gwyn' and is still standing, marked by a plaque. I still drive past it when visiting the area. Elgar wrote many of his best-known works during this period. Vaughan Williams came from Gloucestershire as did Holst, although both spent most of their lives in London. Delius was born in Bradford and lived in the USA and Germany.
10. I now live on Wirral, in north-west England. Which of the following actors, known for portraying James Bond, was raised on the Wirral peninsula?

Daniel Craig was born in Chester and was brought up in Wirral, where he went to school in West Kirby. Dalton was born in Wales, Connery in Scotland and Brosnan in Ireland.
