Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. R4 does not broadcast 24/7. When does it wake up?

Answer: 05:20

This is one of the few constants in the R4 timetable throughout the week. At 5:20 GMT or BST, R4 takes its frequency back from the World Service which use the frequency overnight.
2. After a trailer for upcoming programmes has run what iconic segment is broadcast?

Answer: "The Shipping Forecast"

"The Shipping Forecast" is a weather bulletin describing the weather conditions throughout a large part of the seas surrounding the British Isles. There are various lengths of shipping forecasts throughout the day but this is the most comprehensive including deep sea areas and coastal waters. It's also the only one to be presented by a weather forecaster and runs for about ten minutes.
3. Following the news and "Prayer for the Day", which programme is aired, whose main focus isn't on the urban majority of the population?

Answer: "Farming Today"

"Farming Today" covers all things rural these days though when I first started listening to R4 all it covered were the daily meat and crop prices. The programme runs from 5:46 to 5:58 approximately. It is followed by "Tweet of the Day" Tuesdays to Fridays and the "Farming Five Day Forecast" on Mondays.
4. At 06:00 we have the flagship news and current affairs programme, "Today". Which of these four presenters had the longest tenure on the programme?

Answer: John Humphrys

John Humphrys began on "Today" in January 1987 and it's a role he would retain for more than 30 years.
Justin Webb used to be with BBCs North America before taking up this role. He started with "Today" in 2009.
Mishal Husain joined the "Today" team in 2013 and has been the presenter of the monthly "From Our Home Correspondent".
Carrie Gracie joined the team in late 2017 after resigning from the post of China Editor over a pay dispute, on a temporary basis.
5. The 9:00 to 9:45 slot is usually a discussion type programme but there's no constant programme until 9:45. R4 splits its frequency at that time. Which programme is broadcast on longwave?

Answer: "The Daily Service"

"The Daily Service" is broadcast from various churches round the country with most denominations being represented though a number of churches are used more often than others.
"Book of the Week" is the programme broadacst in this slot on the FM frequency while "You and Yours" and "Just a Minute" are programmes in their own right.
6. The 10:00 slot is another iconic programme. By title this programme should only be of interest to which part of the population?

Answer: "Woman's Hour"

"Woman's Hour" was first broadcast in 1946 and its first presenter was a man! Since then it's presented features of interest to both men and women as well as campaigning on purely female issues.
"Men's Hour" isn't a R4 programme but a similar programme to "Woman's Hour" dealing with things of interest to men is broadcast on R5 (or used to be)
"Children's Hour" used to exist many decades ago and was a storytelling and activity programme for pre-school children. As far as I am aware "Family Hour" has never existed.
7. The eleven to twelve slot doesn't have a particular programme common to the slot but one of the programmes that appears in this slot goes by the acronym FOOC. Can you tell me what the full name of this programme is?

Answer: "From Our Own Correspondent"

"From Our Own Correspondent" gives the various BBC foreign correspondents a chance to give a more detailed report on events in their patch or to talk about something that has caught their attention but isn't otherwise deemed newsworthy. The weekday edition of FOOC goes out on Thursdays but is stranded with other programmes dealing with the rest of the world.

There is a Saturday edition at 11:30 that goes out throughout the year.
8. The 12:00 to 12:15 slot can have various programmes in it but between 2014 and 2018 a programme called "Home Front" has occupied part of the slot. What's significant about the programme and the dates?

Answer: It covers World War I

"Home Front" tells the fictional stories of people living in Hastings and up on Tyneside. The series tells the story of the war years from a particular character's point of view with a different character in each story though various characters repeat over time and overlap.
9. The 12:15 to 13:00 slot is covered by "You and Yours". What subject is covered by this programme?

Answer: Consumer affairs

"You and Yours" has campaigned on many issues over the years. The programme has also looked into, er, sharp practices by companies or government departments.
10. In which year did R4 start broadcasting?

Answer: 1967

Along with Radio stations 1 to 3, Radio 4 was formed out of the various parts of the original radio channels operated by the BBC with Radio 4 being formed virtually wholesale from the old Home Service.
