Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did Marvel Comics have a recurring costumed character appear before The Fantastic Four?

Answer: Yes

Doctor Droom appeared in the anthology "Amazing Adventures" in issues 1 through 4 and 6. His first appearance(June, 1961) predates "Fantastic Four" issue 1 (November, 1961) by five months. He was forgotten for many years but then the character was resurrected with the name Doctor Druid, so as not to be confused with Doctor Doom. "Amazing Adventures" would be retitled "Amazing Adult Fantasy" with issue 7, and find its' final issue, number 15, dropping the word "Adult".
2. In their first encounter with Dr. Doom, how did he get away from The Fantastic Four?

Answer: He flew away with a jet pack

"Fantastic" Four #5 represented the first of many appearances by the demented Dr. Doom, with the F.F. constantly thwarting his plans for world domination.
3. The first appearance of Thor had his name incorrect near the end-- how was it spelled?

Answer: THORR

Thor first appeared in "Journey Into Mystery" #83 and the very last panel says: "THORR The Mighty, the greatest new superhero of all time, will appear regularly in Journey Into Mystery!". Who's to blame-- Stan Lee, penciller Jack Kirby or whoever was the letterer?
4. "The Incredible Hulk" #1 introduced us to a number of characters, including Dr. Bruce Banner, who would shortly change into the Grey (initially) Skinned Goliath. What was the name of his Russian assistant?

Answer: Igor

You'd think at a time during the Cold War, when this was originally published that General "Thunderbolt" Ross or someone else would have thought that someone with an obvious name like that might be suspect?
5. "Amazing Fantasy" #15 heralded the first appearance of the teen sensation Spider-Man. After discovering his Uncle Ben's been killed, where does he find out the killer is hiding?

Answer: Acme warehouse

Initially titled "Amazing Adult Fantasy", it became a vehicle to showcase the awesome work of Steve Ditko. With low sales, publisher Martin Goodman decided to cancel the title. Stan Lee asked if he could try out a new idea for the last issue; after all he said, it's being cancelled, you have nothing to lose. Stan originally had Jack Kirby in mind as the penciller, but after doing five pages, he changed his mind. Stan said Jack's rendering made the character look too heroic, and made the change to have Steve do it instead.

However, the cover is both attributed to Kirby and Ditko. In Stan's "Origins of Marvel Comics", Stan takes sole credit for creating Spider-Man, but in "Tales To Astonish" by Ronin Ro, a book about Kirby and to a lesser degree, his relationship with Stan, he claims he and Joe Simon had an idea for a "Spider-Man" dating back to the '50s. Supposedly, he brought this up to Stan, and he utilized some concepts, such as him being an orphan.
6. In "Daredevil" #1, Matt Murdock's dad is portrayed as a past-his-prime boxer- what name did he go by in the ring?

Answer: "Battling Jack" Murdock

Matt's father Jack had gone to The Fixer to get work in the ring, but many of these fights were fixed to let him win. When he's told he has to lose a bout, he says no, knowing Matt is coming that night to see him. He wants his son to be proud of him and is determined to win no matter what the cost.

After a knockout and winning the fight, one of The Fixer's men, Slade, is ordered to rub him out. Already blind with his razor-sharp senses and radar, this is the catalyst that makes him take on the persona of Daredevil.
7. Who was the evil warlord who held Tony Stark captive in "Tales Of Suspense" #39?

Answer: Wong Chu

The original story had placed Tony getting ambushed in Vietnam, and over the years the place was updated to the first Gulf War, and then Afghanistan. Loc Do, Zhang Tong and Temugin are all characters associated with Iron Man villain, The Mandarin.
8. Besides pencilling the cover to "Amazing Fantasy" #15, did Jack Kirby ever draw Spider-Man anywhere else?

Answer: Yes

"Strange Tales Annual"#2 from 1963 had the second meeting between The Human Torch and Spider-Man, the first occuring in "Spider-Man" #1. Another possibility is the cover to "The Avengers" #11. According the website comics.org, "The cover is thought by many to be a composite or a collaboration, with no consensus being reached as to who the participants were, consensus is nearest on Chic Stone as inker". It lists Kirby, Ditko and Dick Ayers, all as pencillers.
9. As Atlas Comics, Marvel had many books in the war genre, but none that was popular or everlasting. That changed with "Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos", set in WWII Europe. What original golden age character appeared in this series?

Answer: Captain America

Both Captain America and Bucky appeared in issue 13. The book was so popular, many wrote in asking what was Sgt. Fury up to in the present? That prompted Stan Lee to create the "Nick Fury, Agent of Shield" series in "Strange Tales", chronicling his current exploits.
10. In "X-Men" #1, we meet Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, who has his school for "gifted youngsters"-- where is this school located?

Answer: Westchester County, New York

When Stan Lee created the concept for this series, it was the idea of people being born with a mutation, having something "extra" in them, or "Xtra", hence the name for the book.
