Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mr Archer, Mrs Archer, Phil, Peggy and Tex were all which sort of animal kept by Eddie Grundy?

Answer: Ferrets

One time poacher and bad boy Eddie Grundy has mellowed with age, no doubt aided by son William growing up to become the local gamekeeper. The ferrets were used for some of his 'outdoor activities'.
2. Which animal was involved in the death of Mark Hebden?

Answer: Horse

No! The answer is not a 'mobile faun'! It is true, however, that Mark's cause was not helped by the fact that he was using a cell phone whilst driving. His car hit a tree as he swerved to avoid Caroline Bone who had been thrown from her horse. He left a widow, Shula, and unborn son Daniel.
3. Which animals do you LEAST associate with Jill Archer?

Answer: Llamas

Brookfield Farm, where Phil and Jill Archer lived for many years, is a dairy farm and therefore Jill has had plenty of involvement with cows. The birds and the bees are her personal enterprises.
4. In 2007, what animal named Bertie was lost by the exotic dancer Scarlett Del Monte?

Answer: Boa Constrictor

The mind boggles at an act that could encompass any of the other options. There were various sightings of Bertie in the village but he finally turned up in Lynda Snell's bed, which is also a little mind boggling!
5. What sort of animal was Clint who managed to survive past Christmas 1989?

Answer: Turkey

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a Grundy trying to sell you a turkey. In this case Clint avoided the chop thanks to the young William Grundy adopting him as a pet. Ironically, William grew up to be a gamekeeper with a primary role of preparing birds to be shot.
6. There have been several dogs featured in storylines as befits a farming community. What breed was Captain, Jack Woolley's trusty companion for many years?

Answer: Staffordshire Terrier

Jack bought Captain as a puppy in 1978. He died in 1991 while Jack and Peggy were away on their honeymoon.
7. Sadly, Grace Archer perished in a fire at Brookfield Farm in 1955, coincidentally on the same night that Britain's first commercial television station was launched! What kind of animal was Midnight that Grace ran into the blaze to save?

Answer: Horse

Grace was Phil Archer's first wife and they had been married for six months at the time of her death. Midnight was a horse owned by Christine Archer. Grace ran into the stables and managed to save Midnight at the cost of her own life.

In 2008, the UK "Daily Telegraph" reported a secret BBC memo, which confirmed what people had 'known' all along, namely that the coincidence, was no coincidence at all. (Source: "Daily Telegraph" - 16th April 2008)
8. Baby Spice was a prizewinner in "The Archers" but not for singing and certainly not as a Spice Girls look-alike. What kind of animal was she?

Answer: Cow

Baby Spice was a Jersey cow reared by Ed Grundy and represented one of his first steps into animal husbandry after some tear away teenage years. The bovine equivalents of Posh Spice and Ginger Spice have also featured in the show.
9. In 2003, David Archer shot which sort of animal that led to his being prosecuted?

Answer: Badger

The badger is a protected animal under UK law and so David was investigated by the RSPCA and prosecuted. At the time, he was concerned about tuberculosis at Brookfield Farm which badgers are often blamed for spreading but without categorical proof.

A few visitors to the Bull over the years might have wished he'd taken out Eccles the peacock instead.
10. Over the years, Robert and Lynda Snell have kept a veritable menagerie at Ambridge Hall. What sort of animal are Wolfgang and Constanza?

Answer: Llamas

The Snells' other animals have included goats called Demeter and Persephone.
